ESPN Football (NFL 2k4)

It officially came out on thursday, but other than the crappy commercials i havent heard anything about it. Has anyone picked up a copy?

I heard that theres a new first person viewpoint (i.e. if you play as warren sapp, you actually see the offensive linemen). i dunno if thats true but im wondering if it comes somewhat close to madden.

I picked it up yesterday, and I tell you what the game is sheer fun. Control of your players is head over heels better than madden (which i also have). The first person mode is pretty exciting the first few times you play it, but it quickly wears off after you get frustrated by the lack of visibility. I just don't think football games were meant to be played in first person. It's a great add-on, but definitely not the way of the future. The ESPN presentation is excellent, with pretty good commentary. I think the overall look of the game is better than Madden too. There's some amazing detail in the players, and there are some extremely realistic animations for a whole slew of tackles. The addition of the "Crib" is a lot of fun too, filling your room/house/apartment with goodies you've earned.

It's really a close toss-up. I love Maddden and it's extensive owner mode. Plus I really miss playmaker when I'm playing ESPN NFL 2K4. However, NFL 2K4 is a great football experience. Both visually and in execution. It's a tough choice, which is why I own both. Rent them at your local video store first, if you can. I really can't whole heartedly recommend either one, they're both great football games.

Yeah, its pretty good. Got some nice new features and such, as they do with every football game.

I just might pick that up, but I wanna ask several questions first...

1) What did it cost you to buy it? I bought NFL 2k3 brand new for about 25 bucks, and I don't want to pay much more than that if I have to.

2) Is it still availible for all systems? I remember talk that many third-party companies would quit making games for the GameCube, and I don't know if Sega was one of them or not.

3) Can you make your own plays? I loved that about the first one on the DreamCast, and I wish they'd bring that back.

4) How much more improved is Create-A-Player? I had no problem with NFL 2k3's, but improvement is always nice.

5) Are there any other new/innovative/sweet features not mentioned yet?

Any help would be nice.

can u play any position w/ 1st person?

Mikado 09-09-2003 08:18 AM

This latest version is the typical $49.95, it's not a discounted rate like last year's version. However, I think you're getting a much more solid game this time around.

I don't recall seeing it for Gamecube, but it is definitely available for PS2 and Xbox. I own the Xbox version myself.

They still haven't brought back the play maker. You can edit your playbooks, by choosing to add or remove plays from a giant list, but you can't actually create or change the play itself.

I don't think there's a big improvement here. There are quite a few options for the look and abilities of your player, but nothing new or exciting. I generally don't mess with Create-a-Player/Create-a-Team.

I can't think of anything else off hand that's truely new or unique. The 'Crib' can be interesting once you unlock some of the mini-games. Other than that it's really just something pretty to look at. You can change furniture, pictures, carpet, tile, trophies, bobble-heads, etc which gives it some personal touches. Other than that, there's not much there for substance.

EDIT: Oh, something I did want to add is that in franchise mode, your coach will recieve emails in his inbox that detail aspects of the league, weather reports, stats, owner's concern's, etc. It's an interesting touch to help keep you in the game.

Jhericurl21: Yes you can play any position in 1st person. It's really interesting to run in 1st person, but the passing game quickly becomes annoying. It's hard enough to see your open recievers in football games as it is, but in 1st person it's even harder. You do have a nice 'slow-mo' button you can use for a second or two to help get your bearings, but often it's not that much of an advantage. I play 1st person every now and then, mostly to show it off to friends, but in franchise mode I stick to the default football camera.

About that First Person View thing...I have no interest in playing with that view except once or twice to try it out, but I'd been preaching for years they need it for replays. Are you able to get a F.P.V. in a replay, or is it just for while you're playing in the game?

Mikado 09-11-2003 09:49 AM

From what I can tell it's only in the default view. Now if you're playing First Person Football, then your replay may be in first person. But I haven't seen the option to play from the default view, and then see a replay from first person view.

I was never a huge fan of football games, they are all pretty much the same, thus they can't keep me interested.
