Old PC games you still play
Just wondering what old PC games are still in your game rotation. And how do you manage to play these outdated games on high end systems.
Me? I still occasionally go back to the AD&D Gold Box games. The games like Pool of Radiance (original), Curse of the Azure Bonds, and Secret of the Silver Blades. The first one came out in 1988. XP won't run these, but I've still got my Win 95 233 MHz to run these games. |
Master of Orion 1 and 2 (mostly 2 since its a updated version of 1) Starcontrol 2 (best rpg/action game ever) Starflight (on occation) D/generation, every ultima game on occation but ultima 7 is my favorite. some crazy old games like black magic and below the root. those you need an apple ][ C emulator to play. but its worth the hassel for sure.
|
every now and then i will go through the original duke nukem side scrollers....and the other apogee, epic side scrollers like jill of the jungle and jazz jackrabbit....
|
The tetris game from "Best Of Windows Entertainment Pack"
(and ski free) :S |
I've still got a few old ones---Quake 1 and 2, Turok, Forsaken (excellent, btw), Interstate '76. These aren't that old but are my oldest.
|
Action Quake 2 although it's been a few months since.
|
Stars! and scorched earth. I do have an old board/computer combo game from '88 I sometimes play when friends are over.
|

Trailblazer (God I loved that one on the C64. Win32 version here.) Turrican (Another brilliant C64 classic. Win32 version here.) Other NEW variants on older games. Crimsonland (Always felt like a derivative of Abuse to me. D/L it here.) Decker - Nethack cyberpunk style! Well, I hope you try some of these out for yourselves! They're all pretty damn good, IMHO. |
MOO2, Harpoon2, Blade Runner, Doom.

|
I wish I still had my Duke Nukem game, or I'd have it on this computer. Man, nothing tops Quake 1 though...I love that game!
|
I still play Quake I regularly - especially with Tenebrae and glQuake making it so beautiful.
|
Command and Conquer.
|
x-com

i still play Sid Meier's Pirates- its gotta be late 80's
and it still rules! |
Tribes! - i play at work, when i can. Still a great jump in-jump out game.
|
Jedi Knight 1, star control 2 and the original silent hunter...
such a pain in the ass getting them to work in winxp though Oh yeah, leasure suit larry! |
Pirates, good.
X-Com, better. Civilization, best (can't believe I'm the first to mention this one). |
Myst 1
FF7 Pharaoh and best of all....NOX! |
I'd still play Duke Nukem 3d if anyone else still did. Best FPS of all time.
|

|
X-Com, Starflight, Bards Tale 1-3, Master of Orion, definitely the Gold Box Dungeons and Dragons games.
I have a copy of Bards Tale II for the PC but the music for it is so much better on my Commodore 64 emulator :) |
Jones in the Fast Lane
Sam and Max Hit the Road Amazon HACKER Myst I never beat Amazon and HACKER back when I had an IBM PCjr. I play those a little bit now and again. The rest I just love so much I re-play them. And Jones is always fun. |
Duke Nukem 3d still rocks to this day
|
The best game ever and the main thing that occupies my attention: Oregon Trail!
|
civilization I&II, colonization!
|
Tetris!!! Especially Dungeon Dwellers Design's version originally named ACiD Tetris, but now known as Super ACiD Block Attack. I will always fondly remember it as ACiD Tetris though

I'm still a huge fan of the Leisure Suit Larry series. There are some old ones that I've tried installing, with no luck. There was one called TV Sports Boxing, and 4D boxing. Maybe I just don't have any lucky with my old boxing games.
|
Populous I and II
|
X-Com
Elite Force Duke Nukem Stronghold Settlers |
X-Wing Alliance just got re-installed last night. It's fun. Also, I play a lot of WW2 Fighters by Janes.
|
Scorched Earth, Oregon Trail, Leisure Suit Larry
|
Heh, Asheron's Call... Hey, it's about four years old now, that's pretty old...
|
Actually, I borrowed a friend's box of X-Wing Alliance, and it was scary how I somehow instinctively remembered the keys, which were essentially the same when I played TIE Fighter or X-Wing over seven years ago. It also reminded me that I need to get a new Flightstick where the pots don't spike near the deadzone.
That, and System Shock. My sound card would get flaky in the game after 20 minutes, but I'd just quit, reboot, and keep at it. Love that game, way ahead of it's time when it came out. I've been trying to get an old computer so I can play those games and 3dfx games Longbow 2 and Independence War to run. Never seemed to like these newfangled 2 gig computers with over 512 megs of ram. |
Zork!
|
I've beaten Loom a few weeks ago (the 256-color talkie version! w00t!). I love old Lucas Arts games...
Currently playing Heroes of Might and Magic 3, with occassional mesochistic rounds of ABUSE (remember that old DOS game? with the gun-toting alien?). |

they made a populous 3 that wasn't half bad either. all 3d looks good anyway.
|
Transport Tycoon!
THE most addictive game I have ever had the joy of playing! |
don't know if it counts but nes, snes, genesis, turbo grafx 16 emulators
|
This is my favorite thread. I've gone out and d/led a bunch of these games (well the free ones at least).
Most of the old games I play aren't all that old because Windows 2000 won't play most of them, even with "Win95 compatibility" turned on. I started playing Fallout under WineX a few months ago, distractions have prevented me from playing it more though. |

Star Control II like a mother.
Also Civilization II, X-Com: UFO Defense, Fallout, Monkey Island, and the game I finally bought a joystick for: TIE Fighter. |
I've still got my Atari 2600, complete with games, from about 20 years ago. Maybe it's time to let my kids have some fun with it!
|
anyone heard of loom
Its an old old lucasarts game, You have to play musical notes it the right order to get stuff to happen, I never finished it, so i cranked it up and decided to get it done |
Lucas Arts and Sierra made the best games. Blizzard also. Pretty much anything they've ever released are games that I revisit every so often, and not just for the sake of nostaglia, but because they're fun, and I still enjoy playing all of them.

Glad to see someone else has heard about it. Here are some games I REALLY want to play but can't for whatever reason: Dungeon Master 2: Legend of Skullkeep - very nice D&D-style dungeon crawl. Just doesn't work on modern PCs. Poppycock. Epic - A space sim. I remember playing this when I was a wee lad... I have a good feeling about this game, but very few memories. I want to find it. Bolo - Found it on a demo disc a few years ago. Its a Windows game involving a ball on a chain or something.. You use your mouse to create inertia and move the ball to solve puzzles and such. It was very fun and addictive. Never seen it anywhere again. Spy (not sure of exact name) - Its one of my life goals to find this game. The last time I played it was in Soviet Russia, when I was 6 or 7 years old (late 80's), on a 286 machine. All I remember was that the first stage involved me piloting a hang-glider, and avoiding getting shot down. The second stage had me driving a car and spilling oil to slow down pursuers. Never got past the second stage :D If anyone can help me play these games again, I'll be forever in your debt. |
Who here remember X-Com?
Well before X-Com, there was Laser Squad. And now I've heard there's Laser Squad Online (played via email), with up to 3 players! Wow. Classic turn-based tactical warfare! |

Also, a weird little ancient Maxis title called "robosport" is still the best multiplayer strategy game concept Evar |
all of the monkey island games... all three of them run fine on my computer..
|
Oh wow, Robosport. I was just thinking about that the other day when I d/l'ed the Combat Mission demo. The whole "plan your attack turn and then watch it in real-time" thing is exactly the same. Although with much better graphics and options, of course.
I still boot up the Monkey Island games occasionally. I even bought the last one (Curse? Return? the cartoony one, anyway) from a bargain bin recently, but I haven't played it because I never beat the third game, and I read that there's a lot of "in" jokes in the last one if you've played the whole series. X-Com rocks (especially Apocalypse, although nobody else seemed to like it), but I can't get it to run. I'm waiting on that new UFO game. Civ is always a pleasure. |
SimAnt. Love that game :)
|
heh, tribes, battlezone 1, quake 2 - I'm building a system to house my modern computer (winXP) and one tou house my Glide games so can play these again, they all so rocked:D
|
|
Monkey Island series, Ive completed them sevral times, and I almost kill myself of laughter everytime.
"How much wood would a wood chuck chuck if a wood chuck could chuck wood?" "A wood chuck wouldnt chuck any amount of wood since it cant chuck wood at all." "But IF a wood chuck could chuck any amount of wood, how much wood would a wood chuck chuck?" "Even if a wood chuck could chuck any amount of wood, it wouldnt chuck any amount of wood. It has no use" or something like that:P |
I've been playing a lot of Diablo II recently but i Don't know if that's really considered old...
|
Hmmm Diablo 1 and 2 and a little Starcraft now and then;)
and some times Thief 1, 2 and Homeworld |

|
Duke Nukem, ahh, those were great days... I've never gotten to play it again, but those were fun, and bubble bobble! That was great!
|
I'm having fun playing Sanitarium at the moment. I downloaded it from underdogs and it is funny playing a mental patient.
|
X-Com is still one of the best games created, and I'm playing it through again at current.
Homeworld is always fun, esp. if you use mods now and thne to shake thigns up. Age of Wonders is always good for a play through in campaign mode once in awhile, and is, in my opinion, much more fun than the Heroes series. And a game thats getting on in its years; Alpha Centauri. Play this on lan with my friends when I can. gg Planet Busters  . |
im still trying to beat fallout.. i know that isnt *too* old, but hey, im a youngun.
and worms. i play worms quite often. |
Fallout and Fallout 2
|
Still play Quake 1, with the Open GL mod. Frame rates a go go.
|
NetHACKQT
Welltris Hero's Quest I I want to play Quarentine, but i cant get it to run at all, any advice from someone who has played the game? |
Bards Tale 1 - Still a great RPG
Elite - Yes I still give this a go on my old C64 Choas - This was a ZX Spectrum game which was very addictive |
Hmm, I don't really play really old games, although I do play those old Sierra classics once in a while.
|
Age of Empires series.
|
Nethack! Yay!
I'm also addicted to Star Control 2 right now. |
PC
- Fallout 1 & Fallout 2 - Quest For Glory series - Grand Theft Auto MAC -Fallout 1 & Fallout 2 Yes, I really like Fallout, it is a great game to play on a laptop between classes. |
lets see.... (rooting through CD rack)
Fallout 1 and 2 (ahhh... burst at point blank) Descent (classic robot-killing fun) Halflife (I suppose that's kinda old now?) C&C (classic rts) C&C Red Alert (before it was just Red Alert...) Diablo 1 and 2 (tap tap tap splat!) Total Annihilation (um.. still can't tell the units apart, but its still fun) Unreal Gold (haven't played that in a while... think I might have to bust it out again) Wing Commander Prophecy Freespace (two of the best space combat sims, IMHO) Oh, and Starcraft never dies edit: and yes, I still play these pretty often. That's when I get tired of my newer games, uninstall them, and actually have space for the older ones... |
Starcraft and Wolfenstein 3D for ever...my brother plays Commander Keen sometimes.
