Dance Dance Revolution

A few years ago, a friend showed me DDR on his PC. He kept telling me how great it was. I didn't see what the big deal was. Then, I saw it in action. I got pretty hooked. Eventually, I bought some pads for Dreamcast, played in the arcades whenever possible, and got decent. At some point, I downloaded DWI and about 1200 songs for my PC. I recently invested in some Cobalt Flux pads. Oh, and my brother owns a DDR machine. =)

Okay, so who here beats me as an addict?

t3m3st 07-23-2003 07:05 PM

DDR is the devil!!

Phaenx 07-23-2003 07:21 PM

Watching fat kids play it at the mall is the best piece of entertainment ever. Jiggling back fat is hypnotic, like a lava lamp.

DrJekyll 07-24-2003 01:01 AM

Phaenx, that's got to the be the grossest thing I've heard today.

t3m3st, why's DDR the devil? It's good, clean fun. Well, aside from the really raunchy songs and the fact that it makes you sweat and smell.

Erebus3825 07-24-2003 01:51 AM

DDR rocks.. I started at the beginning of this year and so far I'm capable of most heavy songs.. working on getting an A on rhythm and police though.

A friend of mine started playing it Christmas of 2002 and I played it a few times and had a lot of fun with it. Before actually playing it I always been aware of DDR but had no real interest in it.

MPower 07-24-2003 09:19 AM

I bring it out for my xmas partys. Drunk 30+ people trying to dance is a riot.

Ganguro 07-24-2003 11:44 AM

rookies.. gotta love em, can't ban em for being silly :)

I love DDR, but personally after 5th mix i found the songs to be soo Eurotrashy that it wasn't fun anymore.

twister002 07-24-2003 12:13 PM

Where can you find DDR for the Dreamcast? I've been wanting to get it, but I've only found it for the PS and PS2 at the game shops. Did they release DDR for the Dreamcast in the US?

Locke 07-24-2003 12:38 PM

I've heard that some people us DDR and pad to loose weight. Anyone here do that?

Ganguro 07-24-2003 04:56 PM

i havent lost any weight but i have increased my stamina something feirce. At the heigh of my playing i could play DDR nonstop for 3 hours before collapsing in a sweaty heap. A buddy of mine went on a low carb diet, and started playing 3 hours of DDR a day and lost 50lbs in 3 months to get in shape for his wedding. It takes mopre than just DDR, but it could work..very aerobic game.

DDR 2nd mix DID come out for the Dreamcast. It's very difficult to purchase a copy, but not too hard to find one using emule. There is also a DDR-esque game for the dreamcast that is free and supposrts song swapping called "Feet of Fury". Search Google for it; it's very well done.

Christmas of 2003 isn't for another five months. :p

maximus 07-25-2003 05:03 PM

i watched people at the shore dancing on that thing and their faces are the best. they are in such deep thought and are soooo concentrated the only way to get thier attention is to tackle them.

I tried once, but got discouraged by my white boy sense of "rhythm". I eventually decided it'd be better to lay off the fried foods. :)

gibz0r 07-25-2003 06:07 PM

I've been addicted since last year. Im pretty decent, I can do most 8-9 footers unless they are above 160BPMish( = bad :p). I've only spent about $70 on DDR, bought Konamix, 2 BNSUSA mats, and PSXchange(boot disk) for more ddr....

Been playing on and off for the past year. When you first started did you "bunny hop"? I dont really know what to call it, but I found myself doing that a lot. After each step, I would hop back with the foot i just used to the center, and use my free foot on the next arrow. Man that habit was hard to kick.....

hahaha 07-25-2003 10:08 PM

Ive got stepmania for my pc. Its basically DDR, but you can add songs. Does anyone know some good places to download good songs for it?

CyCo PL 07-26-2003 02:18 AM

I have mixed feelings about Dance Dance... all bad feelings but mixed nonetheless

Parappa the Rapper on the other hand, is awesome.

Realizm 07-26-2003 10:03 AM

Laughing at the fat kids trying to have fun doing Some kind of physical activity. That sucks..

Pyroman 07-26-2003 05:18 PM

I have been playing for a few years. I can AA most of the songs, and nearly combo MAX 300. I originally founded the IRC channel #DDRManiaX for the website www.ddrmaniax.net in January 2002, even though they are both full of newbies now. I am not too much of a DDR addict, but more of a Bemani addict, as I have many of the soundtracks and games and such. Bemani led me to the dance music genre in general, and that's what I listen to all the time now. If you want some Stepmania/DWI songs, you are always free to join #DDRManiaX as long as you're not a retarded newbie [/cheap plug].

DrJekyll 07-28-2003 07:33 PM

Pyroman has the right idea with the irc channel. That's usually your best bet on official stuff. DDRmaniax's forums are pretty good for original songs/step files. DDRei.com recently started their 4th TournaMix (a bunch of people submit originals).

DDR for Dreamcast...there were actually two different discs. The first was 2nd Mix (which included a few 3rd Mix songs) and the second was the more rare Club Mix. Personally, I wouldn't really suggest that route. There's just not enough DDR-related stuff for the DC to justify that sort of investment.

Ganguro, by eurotrashy...do you mean house?

And, DDR is probably at least partially responsible for my lack of gaining any weight the past few years.

TerresqueÜ 07-28-2003 07:59 PM

I love DDR, I play with my friends like every weekend and whenever we get the chance. We all love it, I'm not the best but I'm sufficient enough.

My favorite Mix is Max Import, or 6th Japan if you perfer. In any case I really love DDR. My friend built his own steel pads and hooked a computer with like every song on stepmainia onto them and that onto a huge TV. Playing DDR there really rules!

bobbles 07-28-2003 11:43 PM

Is there like a DDR game for PC (possibly open source one?) I love that game :S (I have the hand-held square dance pad for PSX)

Konami made an official version of DDR for PC, but it has a limited number of songs (and costs money). Dance With Intensity (DWI) and Stepmania are the two most popular emulators, though there are a few others. Not sure if any are open source. Check out DDRManiaX.net for more info.

bobbles 07-29-2003 03:40 AM

Ah thanks alot DrJekyll

No problem. Feel free to ask if you need anything else.

Just out of curiosity, what are y'all's favorite songs from DDR? Personally, I like the happy Japanese techno pop. =)

Anything by Miss Papaya, Bambee, or smile.dk is great in my book.

CaptainFluffer 07-30-2003 07:27 AM

I love DDR especiall 5th mix and after. I didnt like eurobeat at all until I watched Initial D and then started playing DDR. Eurobeat just grows on you...

Ganguro 07-30-2003 08:29 AM

i dont have a problem with house music, seein as how i grew up where house was invented.. Chicago! I just dont like the Eurotechno trashy songs.. I cant think of any examples right now.

I do however know the songs i like:
Le Cafe
Exotic Ethnic
Matsuri Japan
Paranoia 180
Hysteria
Vol 4 Raver's choice

collide 07-30-2003 09:28 PM

DDR is a great way to get over stage fright when playing in public (i.e. at the arcade). It makes for a great workout, and you learn new tricks watching others play. My favorite version is still DDR USA.

I could never really get into USA...not enough songs or options for my tastes.

Ganguro 07-31-2003 08:01 AM

USA is a great intro into DDR if you cant find a second or 3rd mix around. More experienced players hate it though. The song selection is "bleh" and the difficulties are pretty sissified too. It's a ok alternative for people who arent so sure they want to play such an embarassing game in public. you can play Paranoia on what 4..5 feet?

Pyroman 07-31-2003 06:28 PM

Now DDRMAX: Dance Dance Revolution (Which is the american version released last year), THAT'S a home version that you can set your watch to.

holtmate 07-31-2003 06:42 PM

I have to get my hands on a copy ooof DDRMax soon...I'm dying for my Stomp To My Beat fix!
They got DDR Extreme at Gameworks, and it doesn't have it anymore! Curses!!!!

Ganguro 08-01-2003 07:58 AM

stomp to my beat is pretty cool. You can usually find Konamix or whatever it's called for the ps2 at best buy around here for 20 bucks. DDR is really big out here in Vegas.. I think it's because we are so close to Cali.

CaptainFluffer 08-01-2003 06:06 PM

5th mix is my favorite by far ^_^

DrJekyll 08-04-2003 08:21 PM

5th Mix has a pretty good selection of songs, but it's mostly 4th+. After playing almost all of the mixes, I prefer 4th+ and Extreme.

08-04-2003 08:58 PM

There's a really good community at

http://ddrfreak.com

and they have all sorts of information. I'm in the middle of building a platform out of sheet metal, plywood, and acrylic - trying to make it look arcadey and give good feedback in shoes.

I hate playing on a soft pad at home.

blizzak 02-06-2004 12:51 AM

DrJekyll, I suppose you've got me beat in the addict department, but a friend and I made our own hardpad.....so we have you bested in one category heh
yeah we play stepmania with a whole lot of downloaded songs and max and max2 for ps2
only song we haven't beat yet is max 300 heavy, but it should hopefully be done in the next week
and yeah, if anyone has some other good links for downloading sm or dwi files, hook up please
favorite song - any of the AM-3P's (but expecially the 303 bassmix)
and I can't wait for extreme for ps2 to come out!

Spaz007 02-06-2004 09:40 AM

No DDR Xbox. With new songs for Download using Xbox Live:(
