Nefir 07-20-2003 10:08 AM

Yep, any classic Lucas Arts games will keep you busy for a while.

Also don't forget the old Sierra games, like King's Quest, Space Quest, Quest for Glory, Gabriel Knight, etc.

Dynamix made some neat adventure games too - Gobliiins, Gobliins 2, and Goblins 3. (Gobliins 2 is probably the best, but they all rawk).

If you have Windows installed on this machine, dig up a copy of Sierra's Woodruff and the Schnibble of Azimuth.

Be sure to pay your respects to X-COM: UFO Defense and X-COM: Terror From The Deep. The gods of old-school gaming will know if you don't. :D

If you like action games, try ABUSE. That game was way ahead of its time. Also check out Blackthorn.

Some good puzzle games:
The Incredible Machine
Laser Lights
Bolo - oh man, if you find this game somewhere, PLEASE PM ME - it was on a demo disc some years ago, but I've never ever seen it again. Its a Windows game, and involved using the mouse to jerk around a black sphere on a chain (connected to the mouse), do solve puzzles and such.

Aah memories...

Check Abandonware Sites for old Games. I would personally reccomend the Commander Keen Series, Rise of the Triad, Terminal Velocity, One Must Fall 2097....

Full Throttle
Any of the wing commander games... although I dont know how it would feel playing those now... if they are just too old to be enjoyable...
All the old Duke Nuke'm games are always a laugh
System Shock 1 for an intelligent puzzle/shooter
The Space Quest Series is hilarious

Kadath 07-21-2003 01:05 PM

In addition to those suggested(x-com, syndicate, and old LA games in particular), star control 2 is superb, the original dungeon keeper, and the first fallout shouldn't bust your chops badly at all. Old school is where it's at, my man.

mrquackers 07-21-2003 05:12 PM

Wing Commander III or IV; Grim Fandango (!!!!!!!!!); Deus Ex (that *may* not work); Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri; Railroad Tycoon; Interstate 76; Sid Meier's Pirates.

And, of course, there's always MAME and ROMs - which will run on just about anything. And those are some true old school games!

Damn, now I wanna raid my closet and go back and play some of these now...

human 07-21-2003 05:21 PM

For those that mentioned X-Com, isn't a 166 way too fast for that game? Also, how many of you have actually gotten this game up and running outside of DOS? I've been totally unable to get it going recently and I'm seriously getting depressed...

As for old games, if you're into rpgs, definatly check out the old Ultima games, especially the IV-VI great. The original Elder Scrolls game (Arena) is also pretty fun, a touch buggy, but friggin huge.

I don't think Deus Ex is going to run on a 166 though :) Interstate '76 should though if you have a 3dfx card or something like that. That was a true classic.

mrquackers 07-21-2003 05:58 PM

Re-reading the specs, you're right. Deus Ex will never run on the machine. Sorry to raise your hopes Magpie. :(

MPower 07-21-2003 06:43 PM

Civ 2, Starcontrol 2 and X-Com will keep you occupied till you can get a 5ghz

Um....if this is warez related I ask a mod to remove it immediately. There's a sourceforge project called Xenocide that is designed to run on faster machines. http://www.projectxenocide.com/xenocide.exe
Again, this is open-sourced, not stolen programs, so I doubt it's warez.
If you have the collectors' edition of X-Com: UFO Defense/Enemy Unknown (commonly known as X-Com 1) and you are having problems with it running oddly, use this
http://www.xcomufo.com/xcom1fix.exe
Save the file to the directory where UFO Defense is installed, probably something like c:\program files\microprose\x-com collector's edition\UFO Defense. Now, open Windows Explorer from the start menu and go to that same directory. You should see the file xcom1fix.exe. Right-click on the icon of the file and while holding the mouse button, drag it to the desktop and let go. Select "Create Shortcut." Now double-click the shortcut you just created. The game should run. If it does not and you get an error box saying "Couldn't CreateProcess), go back to the UFO Defense directory in Windows Explorer and find the file called "UFO" and rename the file to "UFO Defense" by right-clicking on the file and selecting "Rename". Hopefully, this should get you going.
This fixes the directdraw problem, and is not, I believe, a warez issue. As for getting the collector's edition...well, there, you're on your own.
Sorry to threadjack. I just loves me some X-Com....

Spartak 07-21-2003 08:34 PM

Magpie0001 07-22-2003 09:49 AM

About Deus Ex, My bro suggested the same thing & I was like "as If!!" Dont even go there. Not a fucking chance.

t3m3st 07-22-2003 09:39 PM

Lucasarts had some good ones back then.
Like Star WArs? Give Jedi Knight, Tie Fighter, X-Wing, and XWing Vs Tie Fighter a shot

Frontier - there are plenty of places you can get less buggy hacks on the original, like jffe. I can play that for aaaaaaaages.

Arrow 07-23-2003 12:17 AM

x-wing vs. tie fighter was a cool game.

nhl95 is still crazily fun as well...

Magpie0001 07-23-2003 06:22 AM

I just memberd, Magic Carpet! Anyone else played that game?

frankaroni 07-24-2003 05:52 AM

Ultima 7 was THE BEST...along with part II, the Serpent's Isle. I still play it on my Athlon XP 1700+!!

pnzr.3 07-24-2003 06:19 AM

http://asmo.jakki.org

Jeff 07-24-2003 10:50 AM

Jet pack
Police Quest series
All of the Lucas Arts adventure games are awesome.

bussman 07-24-2003 11:28 AM

The old dos version of mechwarrior 2 might work on that, not sure though.

fhqwhgads 07-24-2003 09:29 PM

Transport Tycoon Deluxe. Great friggin' game.

xenophobe 07-25-2003 01:03 AM

Ultimas: 7, 7/2, Underworld, Underworld II, Online
Fallout 1 & 2
Dunno if Planescape: Torment would run on that, if so DO IT
Grim Fandango (as previously suggested)

...

There was a really strange, but cool, game named "Dark Seed" made based on HP Lovecraft's work that should run on that

Lords of the Realm II

Heroes of Might and Magic III (I think)... if not then go with II (better soundtrack anyway) :)

The old Bladerunner game was pretty sweet...

If nothing else, PLEASE check Ultima Underworld II, Planescape: Torment and Fallout (if you like RPGs, at least).

big_bubba 07-25-2003 09:03 AM

KEEEEEN!!!! :D:D:D

I remember those games...Holy shit they were addictive.

I also played Red Baron a lot, it came out in '93 I think, runs on a 486 so I think you'll be good.

MrBlonde7 07-26-2003 11:32 AM

Privateer ROCKS. I don't know if it's too good or bad for your system, though.

ctembreull 07-26-2003 02:09 PM

Star Control 2 is a good one. I'm also surprised that I didn't see anyone mention the SSI "Gold Box" AD&D adventure games. They were simplistic, long-running, addictive fun.

Minorci 07-26-2003 06:17 PM

Chrono Trigger, dont forget that, bloody awesome game and i still play it sometimes today.

My thoughts exactly....you can add Diablo in there as well.

ChickenChoker 07-27-2003 07:02 PM

There is Wolfenstein3d (the original version) and/or Doom 1/2. I had both of those running on my hand-me-down 286.

Magpie0001 07-28-2003 10:00 AM

I played wolf & doom 1/2 to death & enjoyed them but Im kinda scared to return to them incase the spell is broken.
does that sound loopy??

stinkynutz 07-28-2003 11:20 AM

Master of Orion
X-Com

collide 07-30-2003 09:36 PM

Yes, definitely Sam and Max, DOTT, Monkey Island 1 and 2, Leisure Larry Suit 6, King's Quest 6, Hero's Quest (So You Want To Be A Hero), It Came From the Desert, Commander Keen (1, 4, and 6), Civilization, Quake, Doom, Spear of Destiny, Loom, Maniac Mansion, Pepper's Adventures in Time, Return to Zork! Whew.

Yeah, sort of like how He-Man sucks when you watch it when you're older. Remember that in those games you can't jump. That would be too hard to go back to, graphic issues aside. I remember how happy I was with Dark Forces when a "puzzle" that was stumping me involved jumping over a railing that would have been unassailable in Doom.

cliche 07-31-2003 06:13 AM

Worms, Eye of the Beholder (well, I liked it :) ) and Elite
