Tomb Raider has gone survival horror?

And is it just me, or is the new Lara Croft smoking hot?


On to gameplay!

I think she's supposed to be smoking hot. I think that's as important part of Lara Croft games as being a detective is a part of Batman games or light sabers are a part of Star Wars games. TBH, I'm surprised they toned down her chest for this. She doesn't even look like a DD, let alone the GG cups of the past.

I hope the gameplay is balanced, the characters are well written, and the story isn't too contrived.

Well, yeah...but....

This is the thing. The entire franchise has been built on a foundation of boys' fascination with big breasts. For a long time, Lara Croft had "unrealistic" proportions. (I used quotation marks, because I'm sure there are real women who have the same/similar proportions—albeit, I think it's uncommon, especially without surgery. Mind you, I'm mostly referring to the older images of Croft.)

Then I saw the following pic:

My first thought (after the hot thought) was, Wow....she looks so....real. (And hot.)

For the evolution of Lara Croft in terms of perspective, have a look at this:

You will note that the "older" she gets, the proportionately smaller (generally) her chest gets, and the more realistic her overall proportions.

Honestly, the current image looks very real. I could imagine seeing a real woman looking like her and thinking that she's really, really hot.

She does look more real, but she still seems to have a Square Enix face, which I would argue is hyper-realistic. It's like a combination of Hilary Swank, Odette Yustman, and young Angelina Jolie, minus any perceived imperfections and at around age 16-18. You see it a lot in newer Final Fantasy games and such.

Not that I'm complaining, mind you.

I'm really skeptical of the whole survivor horror angle. Where's the archaeology?

She's very hot, but I do feel like she looks a little too young, and I wish her voice were more of an alto as well. The young soprano image/sound just doesn't seem to fit with Lara Croft for me.

The more I think of it, the more it would seem they've done a bit of a Kate Beckinsale number on her. I'm not complaining.

Though, you're right. She's a bit young. Like 22 or 23 or something.

I too hope the gameplay is balanced. If it's a straight-ahead survival horror, it's not Tomb Raider.

I hope they get the breast bouncing animation right - nude skins just don't work without it.

There are nude skins for Tomb Raider games? Man, if I'd known about that during puberty, I... um... I would have continued to enjoy the game and not done anything differently. :expressionless:

after assassins creed showed me what platforming should be like, i just found tomb raider stale, apart from the puzzles.

I'm actually pretty excited about this game after watching the trailer and gameplay promo.
I've yet to play and complete Assassins creed, so I'm not sure if its at all like this game, but to me, it kinda felt a bit like Heavy Rain, which I loved playing. Really great game.
I like how they've remade Lara Croft as well. I only played the second tomb raider game for pc, and found it irritating, her particularly. The feminist side of me really detested their portrayal of women, let alone a lead female role. I was probably only 11 at the time too.
From the little bit of Lara I saw, I think they've completely redone her. Maybe they have females working on her personality or something! :D
I'll definitely keep my eyes on this game.

I now wonder if market research has found that the biggest demographic of those playing this game are the boys who have grown up with Tomb Raider. Now that these gamers are older, maybe the designers decided that they'd be most attracted to a more realistic (albeit a bit young) Lara.

I mean, look at me. I already have a crush on the new Lara.

Judging by the part of the cinematic when Lara looks at a college graduation pic, I'd venture a guess that she's in the 22-24 age range. I don't think that's too young until we're at least in our early to mid 30s. I'm 27 and IIRC you're also in your late 20s, so I think we're cool.

I've been playing the Tomb Raider: Guardian of the Light. It's been very satisfying game play with some zombies and risen from the dead archetype warriors.

It's been fun.

If the game is as fun as this engine is, which is the same that the Batman Arkham Asylum engine plays.... it's been boat loads of fun.
