Dreamcast players, voice your opinion
Okay, just bought a Dreamcast. (Poverty sucks) What are some good games? (Worth buying on E-bay) I usually play with other people.
Also I heard it's possible (and probably really really legal) to download Dreamcast games off the net. Is this so? |
It is still not legal to download Dreamcast games off the net. The game manufacturers still own all the rights to the games and have the legal option to pursue action against anyone they find stealing their property.
That being said, please do not request pirated games from others on the board. To others, do not offer them to anyone else on the board. However, if it is documented that certain games are freely availible for download by the manufacturer, there is no problem with helping others find those games. |
The Crazy Taxis were fun. Skies of Arcadia is amazing.
<rifles through stack of DC games next to his desk chair...> Oh, duh. Shenmue I and II. Unstoppable gaming force. Loved every second. And Record of Lodoss War was a fun hack and slash. |
Fighters are some of the best games to play with others, and Soul Calibur and Dead or Alive 2 are can't-miss. And you can't do much better than Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 (Fifty-six characters to choose from!) when it comes to 2D fighters. Also, if you have multiple controllers, try Power Stone 1 or 2- really fun with company.
Aside from fighters, I second Shenmue and the Crazy Taxi series, and also suggest Space Channel 5. Very fun, and dirt cheap.:D |
Legitimate imports are very easy to play on a dreamcast using a boot disc. If you don't have a ps2 or a gamecube, Ikaruga and Rez are well worth importing - they shouldn't cost more than the u.s. versions.
|
I don't know if any plays online anymore, but Phantasy Star Online is a great rpg if you got the time. Seaman is another classic that you might want to check out. And if you love sports games, almost every Sega one is worth getting.
|
Shenmue, Crazy Taxis, Tony Hawk, Ultimate Fighting, Hot Shot Golf, Dead or Alive, Jet Grind Radio, Echo, Sonic.
|
I won a Dreamcast in a raffle towards the end of the systems lifespan. Here are my short reviews of the games I played.
Crazy Taxi - Fun as hell, but its basically only got two levels. Unreal Tournament - I really enjoyed it, but I've never played the PC version... Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver - Awesome to look at, but its VERY slow to unfold. I never finished it... recommended only to the very patient. Omikron: The Nomad Soul - It has David Bowie as a character. Other than that, its kind of like Grand Theft Auto 3, except without cars or any other fun parts. Jet Grind Radio - Worth checking out for the cool cartoony graphics and awesome music, but I didn't enjoy the gameplay as much as I thought I would.... spoiled by Tony Hawk Pro Skater, I guess.... Thats all I can remember right now.... |
MARVEL VS. CAPCOM 2!!! :)
|
VIRTUA TENNIS
|
Rival Schools - the best capcom 3d fighter ever!
If you run across the dreamcast keyboard get Typing of the Dead. It looks like a stupid game, you'll say it is a stupid game, and then you will play it for a day straight. And if you import games you can get a few really good 2d shooters (Ikaruga). |
I second what Gortex said, its damn near impossible to find ONE sports game manafactured by Sega that doesn't kick ass. I miss the Dreamcast sometimes, it was so underrated.
|
like Kadath said if you can find Shenmue pick it up. It was a great game.
|
Souls Caliber and NHL 2k!!!!!!
|
Tennis2k2 is really a great game. YOu don't have to like tennis to appreciate the game.
|
Grandia II, not cheap but the best RPG on the Dreamcast (some would say Skyes of Arcadia is the best but haven't played it yet)
Marvel vs. Capcom 1 & 2 Spider-Man for the dreamcast is the best Spider-Man game for the older consoles. The newer version based on the movie for the modern consoles (GC, XBox, PS2) is probably better, but for an old-school Spidey story it can't be beat on the DC. |
there are some great homedev games out there such as athis DDR-esque game called "Feet of Fury" (http://www.feetoffury.com)
|
Soul Caliber
Virtua Tennis NFL2k1 (2k2 sucks) Sonic Adventure 2 Tony Hawk 2 (DEFINITELY) |
You MUST play Skies of Arcadia. That game is amazing. It's on par with the best RPGs of all time, including Final Fantasy.

Three titles if your a fighting game lover.
Soul Calibur Powerstone And the only fighting game sequal EVER to be good as or maybe better than the first Powerstone II |
If you like space shooters I recommend star lancer. Cant go wrong with m vs c 2. Wasted a whole day playing that and soul calibur at work ( It was slow, we were bored). Worms and sega rally are good also.
|
star lancer was good. Damnit, dc owns, why did it have to die :( i fear the xbox will suffer the same fate. :(.
virtua tennis was pretty good,as was sonic adventure, i really liked that game. i liked resident evil code veronica and crazy taxi, and jet grind radio was good as well |

B: DC is better than XBox any day of the week. :D Veronica was solid, but you could always play that on PS2, if you had one. I think the exclusives to DC are the key. |
Oh. Here's one that I enjoyed, but I dunno if anyone else did: Shenmue! The game had no replayability whatsoever, but it was still an enjoyable experience. The sequel is my next xbox pickup.
|
All this talk makes me wanna set it back up...
Did anyone use the adapter to hook it up to a computer monitor? They're going for like $10 including shipping on Ebay, just wondering if it's worth it. |

also you canget Skies of Arcadia VIRTUA TENNIS, ,house of the dead 2, etc. and es, you can get games off the net. |
Also, try Capcom vs SNK. Fucking brilliant game. And Soul Calibur. Music's excellent, the gameplay's excellent, the feels's perfect, the characters are cool, everything about the game is great.
Though, fighting games ARE my preferred genre...but they are brilliant games all the same. |
i enjoyed Slave Zero... especially since there were no decent mech type games....
|
Uhh I'm not sure this really counts as a Warez but you can download starter discs where after starting it up with a disc you can then load up ROMS of old Nintendo games on your Dreamcast!!

Best games are Crazy Taxi & Soul Calibur. |
You can load up linux on the thing then play any number of free open source games... Buddy of mine has that up and running, it's pretty damned cool.
Granted, needs a bit of geek karma to do though. |
I just rememebered about this hugely innovateive game for dreamcast. It's called Seamman, you haveta raise this fish type thing in a tank from a tadpole to a full grown...thing. It comes with a voice register that allows you to actually talk to your Seaman. It learns and remembers what you tell it and as it grows it changes based on how well you keep the tank. The game also remembers how many times you've visited your Seaman a day. And the icing on the cake of the great game, it's narrated by Leonard Nemoy!
|
I don't think anyone has mentioned this one yet-- VIRTUAL ON: CYBER TROOPERS! It's a robot-fighting game that I found one day hidden in the back shelves, what a great mindless time consuming game :p
|
Both games in the Tony Hawk series on the DC are great time wasters, and the DC controller is perfect for the controls of the games. And as everyone else has said, the addictiveness of Virtua Tennis can't be beaten.
|
Ah, the Dreamcast. A great system, cut down in its prime by crappy marketing.
My recommendations: Crazy Taxi 1 and 2 Jet Grind Radio Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 Phantasy Star Online All great games, IMO, especially JGR. You can even still play PSO online (although probably only with other players with the DC version). |
Busted out my Dreamcast the other day and remembered the one thing that irked me about it: I hate hate hate having the controller cord at the bottom of the controller :(
|
shenmue 1 and 2
half-life/blue-shift note: since half-life/blueshift was never released for dreamcast the only way to get it is download it of the net or mIRC. If you already played half-life on the PC don't bother trying to find it, it's exactly the same on the DC. |
