Anybody here play Evony?

Hi all. I stumbled upon this game today and I like it a lot.

Brief description: "Evony (which was named Civony until a few days ago) is a massive multiplayer online game you play in a browser. It’s a Flash program, and it’s impressive." Link to review: Evony Review | The Big Critique | Movie and Video Game Reviews

I'm enjoying it. I was just wondering if any of you played/play it. And if so, thoughts?

I'm not trying to plug it, please don't misunderstand.

I guess not. Oh well.

I've been playing since you posted this thread. It's interesting but like all other games of it's kind becomes extremely slow paced. Waiting 30 minutes to buy wood from the marketplace, or a little over an hour to complete an upgrade is tedious. The game is VERY well made though. It's smooth and intuitive UI is welcoming. I'm sure the game become easier as you throw money at it and I could definitely see this costing more than a World of Warcraft addiction. Still, without buying anything with real cash, It's still fun and like a slow paced Civ game with it's own unique thing going on.

I might play until my beginner protection wears off and I'm wiped off the face of the planet by a large alliance.

I prefer Ibory.

/terrible joke

Edit: After reading your linked reviews, it sounds like MageWar ( http://www.the-reincarnation.com/ ) with a graphical flash interface smeared on it. I played SO MUCH magewar in 2000-2001...I really need to not get sucked back in, as it just occurred to me my cell phone is fully capable of running the page for it.....uh-oh.....

I played it for a little while.... don't get your hopes up. It gets pretty boring, and the game has a ton of serious issues (which aren't helped by entirely unresponsive customer service). Take a look on the forums and you'll see tons of complaints.

They stole their original graphics from some Microsoft game (I forget which one), and stole their original advertising images from some costume catalog. They claimed to be out of beta back in April, and then sometime in May they made a big announcement that they were leaving beta and changing the name. Normally you leave beta when all the bugs are fixed, but not Evony... even after leaving beta, servers were frequently crashing throughout the day with no word whatsoever from the Evony staff. Then they made a big announcement (sorry I forget the details) about upgrading the servers to what turned out to be as-yet-unreleased technology. Unsurprisingly, that scheduled upgrade never happened.

Enjoy it as long as you can, but I'd strongly advise not putting any money into the game if you're normally inclined to do such a thing. I'm not one to pay for a browser game, but Evony was terrible even for a free game when I tried it out.

I play on Server 3 and Server 6. A lot of the buggy and laggy issues have been addressed. I think the game is pretty addictive actually. Depends a lot on your play style. I would say that is a bit hard for a casual gamer to get into that much. It actually needs a good bit of your time to play well.

It borrows a lot of the city building style from Civ games and/or early WarCraft, not WoW, just plain WarCraft. But it also throws you in there with lots of other people trying to fight, build, and survive.

I'd recommend it to anyone looking to try out a free browser based game.

Is this one of those games where the only way to survive and win battles is by getting into a huge alliance of 500 people like the myspace games? If this is like that then forget it. Otherwise I might be interested.

Pretty much.

two days ago i signed up. this game has wasted a fair amount of my time. unless the pace picks up i dont see myself playing it much more.

its like a slower paced, less graphical Age of Empires.

I play on servers 3,4 & 27 and find it enjoyable. I'm to the point where I login once in the morning and send attackers out and again and night to send them out again and every few days start researching a new tech. It's an enjoyable time waster for me.. kills a good hour every day.

Wyodiver33 07-18-2009 07:06 AM

joofoo, just curious, what's your Prestige level? I'm at 73000, but only have one city. I'm not willing to spend money on the game so everything takes forever now.

joofoo 07-21-2009 08:18 PM

On servers 3 & 4 they are nearing 300k with 3 cities per server. I luckily haven't spent any money. I've hit the 300 cents on one server and several 20 cents on the other server. Helps speed up things.

The Guardian recently posted an article about Evony:

Online gaming: Has Evony become the most despised game on the web? | Technology | The Guardian

Has Evony become the most despised game on the web?

Quite possibly. If you've been anywhere near the internet in recent weeks, you may well have noticed the vast number of promotions for a game called Evony – campaigns on websites featuring buxom fantasy queens; countless Google ads and (more disturbingly) millions of spam comments left on blogs.

On the surface, Evony is a pretty standard online strategy game – a simulation in which players take the role of a medieval noble who must build up an empire. But the way the game has been marketed has created a bit of a stir: the games marketer Bruce Everiss has charted the volume of spam being sent by its creators, while Jeff Atwood, a US programmer and blogger, has documented the ads' increasingly racy nature – from a simple medieval warrior promising the game would be "free forever", through a string of increasingly racy images ... until, finally, it was simply advertising itself by showing a pair of breasts.

"Thanks for showing us what it means to take advertising on the internet to the absolute rock bottom ... then dig a sub-basement under that, and keep on digging until you reach the white-hot molten core of the Earth," he wrote last week.

It's not just the advertising that has got the internet up in arms, however – the game itself has drawn criticism from many quarters. Evony takes its inspiration from Civilization, the classic Sid Meier series. In fact, its slavish devotion stretches not only to its original name – it was known as Civony until recently – but also to the details of the game itself; a format so familiar that more than a few gamers to question whether Evony has simply ripped off its predecessors.

And as if bad advertising and tenuous intellectual property were not enough, the game is also under fire for its business model – a system that seems intent on getting players to spend as much money as possible. Players are encouraged to buy in-game extras to speed their progress – but the confusing way the game prices its add-ons means that many users may not realise that a simple action, such as sending a message to another player, can cost 15p a time.

All of this has swirled into a storm of criticism around Evony – except on the game's own web forums, where mentions of its most controversial practices are deleted by moderators. So if Evony is the world's most despised game, who is behind it?

It turns out that the site's backers are equally unpopular. Evony is the product of Universal Multiplayer Game Entertainment (UMGE), a developer linked to a Chinese gold-farming operation called WoWMine. That site has also come in for regular criticism, but the real kicker comes with the news that the company's owners are being sued by Microsoft over allegations of click fraud.

Perhaps Evony isn't the most hated game on the internet: but it certainly runs close.

And here's an amusing blog post about Evony spam: Do you have what it takes to be the next Spam Queen?: MMOGrindHouse.com

Or how about the evolution of Evony ads: http://contexts.org/socimages/2009/0...ideo-game-ads/

This is fun to read about. I don't play online games at all and have been scratching my head at its sleazy banner ads. One is a gape mouthed babe with a sword blade pointed at her like a cock waiting for a BJ.

I am shocked, SHOCKED that this is a shady venture.

Wyodiver33 07-24-2009 06:11 AM

Well, I did learn of the game from the double-d ads, I'll admit that. But I do like the game. My "Prestige" is at 106000 and I have not spent one penny of real money on it. The game is like email to me, I check it a few times a day, do what I have to do, and move on. It's not a real time-sucker.

Lasereth 07-24-2009 07:18 AM

No game should make you WAIT to have fun and play it. Fucking ridiculous. This is like the stupid Facebook and Myspace apps (gang wars, mafia wars, etc.) except you don't have to be on those sites.
