Oh, man - the Lucifer.

That thing was hellish. I loved it.

The Grim Reaper from Castlevania (pick which one) has always been classic, too.

How about any of the 6 end bosses for Wolfenstein 3D? I had so much hassle killing those bastards. Played the game again recently and I can't understand why, they are easy.

Seymour Flux was a bitch to beat the first time around in FFX. I'm always one for the tough bosses, makes the game itself a whole lot better.

The bosses in Metroid Fusion owned me severely the first time through, now they're easier to beat than it is to pass gas after eating an extra spicy burito.

Boss Battles that made me want to cry:

Final Fantasy 4: any ultimate weapon guardian

Final Fantasy 5: Shinjin, Omega Weapon

Final Fantasy 6: Master Mage w/o Life III at level 40-ish

Final Fantasy7: Ruby weapon

FF Tactics: trying to steal all of elmdor's equipment, wiegraf/garifon if ramza has shitty abilities

Final Fight: the wheelchair bastard

Funny thing, most CRPGS allow the player to change tactics and win easily... no impossibly hard battles in fallout/deus ex/BG2/Arcanum

Dude.... I can beat SM-RPG in an afternoon, literally. Culex is easy to defeat if you just heal and toss rock candy.

Forgive my ignorance. I suppose my 13 year old state may have proven the fight more difficult. I haven't touched the game since it came out, so I'm no match for a seasoned veteran like yourself.

*sarcasm off*

As a side note, I whored my rock candies. They were my precccccious and were never used.

The Lucifer in Freespace was another memorable foe.

I'd have to agree with that right there. Not only do you have to fight the regular end boss Amelyssan but you fight all the previous bosses in the game at the same time. And depending on the situation a certain member of your party will turn on you right before the final battle starts and join your enemies. Talk about freaky.

The hardest boss I have ever fought in my entire life is the Egg Viper on Sonic Adventure (Dreamcast). It took my FORTY SEVEN retries to beat this stupid boss, I started counting after the 10th time....easily took up 4 hours of my life, just for one boss. 4 hours straight.

I couldn't believe a game could have a boss that fucking hard.

I never had problems with Ridley- he is my favorite boss of all time, and I was so glad to see him back in Metroid Prime.

I did have trouble with the green guy that would give you spankings on Super Metroid, until I figured out that you can shock him to death. It used to take me up to 20 minutes to defeat him, which really hurt my game time in Super Speed Runs.

i thought the Bowser battles from Mario 64 were cool. even though they were pretty easy, i thought they were a fresh idea and made good use of 3D space for its time.

unless you are really leveled up or using the lazy shell, i don't see how you could consider the SMRPG version of Culex easy. although that game was of only average length and difficulty, the bosses were all pretty memorable. it has been years and i can name a whole bunch of'em.

Damn straight that counts! Until you know the strategy to beat him, he's one of THEE hardest bosses I've played. Once you know how he isn't so bad. Oh, beating lavos on your first ''New Game +" with just Chrono & Marle, now THAT's A bitch!

Not sure how well this one counts, but Cruel Melee in Super Smash Brothers Melee. Yikes!

Riddley? He's easy, you just aim up and fire away everying you've got! He's not really hard, per se... He's all about having more ammo and life than he does. As he's as close as you get to hack'n'slash. Waste all your ammo, and just make sure you have enough energy tanks.. if you don't, you dont' stand a chance.

OH!!! From Fusion.. That Mechanic Organsim boss? Holy hell that one was a bitch. Shit even after learning its 4 different attack styles, I STILL have problems beating it.

perhaps.. but remember you've only run through the game ONCE.. that means you've got to take timeouts to use healing items too. Even if you have luminaire, it still wasn't easy.. you're like what.. lvl 30?

Its also is hard if you can beat it in the place where you're not supposed to beat it WITHOUT using the New Game +... that one is brutal.

I usually do all of the side quests (beating the airship in all three times) before starting a new game+ so my level is significantly inflated.

I gotta second the votes for Dark Link and the tentacles in half-life. I remember just how damn good it felt to fry those things.
God, I want half-life 2 to come out.

Also, Sephriroth (I suck at spelling) from FFXII just makes me want to cream myself as an evil character. So delicous.

AMEN! I read a FAQ that said you should get it close to the edge and then hit it with the crate, rather than waste your weapons beating it up. Yeah, I tried that for a day. Then I just poured every weapon I had into him...only to arrive in the Arctic with nothing but a pistol...
For myself, the hardest boss was kind of obscure. It was this elf chick in Icewind Dale I, on Heart of Fury mode. She's got like 10 fire giant henchmen and she slams a potion of giant strength and oil of speed before going to town on your ass. On regular difficulty I could take her down but HoF mode...that was where I put that game away.

i actually never ended up beating it on the nes, but last year i was able to beat iron mike on my comp using an emulator. 2 of the hardest bosses i beat were actually in FF7, i remember that stupid ruby weapon always ending the battle by removing my character's from battle. that was probably the longest boss i fight i was ever in when it was finally said and beaten.
