New PS3?
It would seem that chains such as WalMart and Best Buy are showing that a new version of the PS3 will be hitting shelves shortly.
It is rumored that they will have significantly larger hard drives, although other details are speculation. What it amounts to, is that I eventually HAVE to get a PS3. God of War III will be a PS3 exclusive release, and not experiencing it in all of its high definition glory is simply not an option. But what is Sony REALLY planning on doing? I could care less about backwards compatability as I own a PS2, but the smaller price tag of the 40gb is certainly more appealing than a $600+ dollar version. Should I panic and get the 40gb version, or should I wait it out and hope that they're either available later or that the new version isn't priced astronomically high? |
I figure they will have both versions available. I wouldn't worry too much about them getting rid of the 40GB version.
|
Wait a month or two the current 40 gig is going to 80 for the same price. Or buy the 499 MGS4 and get a great game backwards compatibility and enjoy it now. Then you can sell the PS2 and get some of your cost back.
|
If they're swapping a 40 to an 80 and not touching the price, then I'll hold out.
Thanks fellas. |
Yeah that is the best plan, no price drop yet from what I have read, I am thinking next holiday it will drop to 299 but this holiday it will stay 399.
|
I believe that's what Sony announced at their E3 press conference, that they're re-releasing the 80g and either dropping the price of the 40 or just eliminating it all together.
|
That'd be fine by me. I'm never going to use up even that much hard drive space. I'll be using it to place a few select games mostly, and its primary duty will probably be as a Blu Ray player.
|
yeah i heard about making the 80 gb 400 now and i think its lame. you can switch out the HDD on ps3s so easily. I wish they'd drop the price so i could just buy one already!
|
i'm just hoping they come out with a gaming bundle that is awesome. like: 2 controllers, 1 or 2 games and a ps3 for only 50% of what it would cost for these extras... then i'd be up for it.
paying 400$ is nice but then you have to spend 50$ for a 2nd controller, 100$ for a game and w/e else you need so it's really 700$ with tax for a ps3 and that is a bit much for me right now. |
If you can get a MGS4 bundle, go for it. It's $499 and it comes with MGS4, the 80 GB PS3, and a rumble controller so it's basically worth $620ish.
|
not bad. I will look into it. right now, i'm wating for a revolutionary game to win me over from my pc. ha!

The thing with the "new" upcoming 80 gig system is no BC and just a bigger HDD, they are replacing the 40 gig HDD with an 80 and selling it as a new system.
This is going to be a big PITA as I see it, because up until now you have been able to differentiate between the features or options on a system by the size of the HDD at time of purchase, I think this is going to throw Joe Consumer for a loop when he goes and buys an 80 gig and it is really just the 40 with a bigger HDD. I had a 60 and own an 80 now, the MGS4 bundle isn't a bad deal at all if you can find one in stock, some places are sold out, some places have a ton of them around here, it is just hit and miss really. If the BC isn't an issue just wait until the "new" 80 hits and grab it or buy one of them now so you can play old games, but imo people make too big a deal about BC now anyway, this far into the life of any new system you aren't looking to play too many old games on it, however for those who want a bit of a blast from the past might be out of luck, example: there is rumor of FFVII making it's way to PS3 in little more than a week, well if this comes by way of PSN and downloadable that is great for those who don't still have their PSone disks, me on the other hand wouldn't want to pay for a download of a game I already own.... Other than that, good luck with your purchase and enjoy the games. |
Seriously though, did that many people really get rid of their PS2's to begin with? Hell, I don't even have to unplug mine when the ps3 makes its way into my home.

I think it's unnacceptable that Sony can't be bothered to make backwards compatibility happen. It can't be that difficult, since they did it on previous SKUs. I think they just don't give a shit. Release a new MGS, a new GTA, and people will buy. :(
