dying for a wii
Quote:
what's worse is that the lady died trying to win a wii for her three kids. i feel sorry for the woman and her family, though i have to say that i think she(and anyone else who participated in that contest) weren't too bright in the first place. urinating is one of the body's main defenses of preventing water intoxication, so not going especially after a long period of time can hurt you. as for the radio station, i hope they get sued into oblivion for holding such a stupid contest, and the people responsible for it get shown to the door. from my understanding, the station did not have a physician on hand for this. not only that, it seems they didn't even bother to check the consequences of having too much water in the body. idiots.

Sacramento sucks because it's so boring there. Don't believe me? They have water drinking contests.
The people at the station should be charged with involuntary manslaughter and should be sentenced as such. That people that irresponsible are allowed to be free is an injustice. |

This is what happens when you don't wait in line or pay out the ass like everybody else who wanted the new consoles. I agree that it was a dumb contest, but I don't think the radio station was at fault. People being greedy and wanting free shit is the problem, not the contest.
I'd like to think if I were going to enter a contest like that, it would be MY responsibility to see what would happen to MY body if I chose to enter it, not the radio station's. If she had researched what she would be doing beforehand, she would have known it could be dangerous, and hopefully influenced her decision with a bit o' knowledge. I'm sure she had to sign some release form before entering, with the station not being at fault for any medical issues and such resulting from the contest. If not, then I could see the radio station being in some big trouble, otherwise, it's sadly the woman's fault.

My opinion exactly... I waited 9 hours to buy my Wii. Some people just want to have their cake and eat it too and are willing to go to any extreme for it.

Oh my god. I can't believe you people - this was a stupid competition, but a competition nonetheless. Three kids are without a mother because she wanted to win them a present, and you come up with quips about how she should have waiting in line.
Jesus fucking christ. It's disgusting.

But there is a matter of keeping things in perspective. Going to that extreme if the radio station was offering to pay all costs of her children going to college and dying for it would be a lot more reasonable than going to the same extreme to win a game console. Besides, right after she won the console, what's she gonna have to go do? Spend money to buy games for it, most likely nearly as much if not more than the console costs, so I highly doubt she was unable to afford the purchase of the system itself.

That's all she was interested in doing too - getting something for free. And I don't consider doing a contest at a radio show to be "extreme". You must lead a pretty tame life if you think drinking water for a contest is "extreme". Besides, she probably had no clue about the dangers of over hydrating. She probably had no clue that you could die from drinking too much water.
If the radio show didn't know about the dangers, then it's still bad for them. They SHOULD have known; they should have done their research about something like that and they should have not done the contest at all. |

I do not live a tame life, but drinking a lot of liquids and then holding your bladder becomes PAINFUL. At least it does for me. That is why I term it extreme. The way she died was also not a quick "Oh Shit I drank too mu.... <dead>" This took quite a bit of time. Extreme does not always mean jumping off of a bridge into a big pile of cow shit, it can include taking a normal everyday activity and going overboard with it.

the radio station has cancelled the show that hosted the contest, and also fired ten people.
http://www.sacbee.com/102/story/108566.html ...was it really that hard for them to consult a doctor for this contest? hell, they could've even just google'd it to found out how dangerous this "contest" really was. Quote:

read the comments posted on the link i just gave. according to the people in the area, a registered nurse called in to the radio show to inform the hosts that what they were doing was very dangerous. and what was their response? joke about it and invite her on to the show. release form or not, they are at least partially responsible.
