Game system for the kids (and me) for Christmas
I'm thinkin' about getting a non-pc game system for the kiddies and myself for Christmas. Which one should I go with? I'm not gonna be hooking it up to the net because I'm on dial-up out here in the Ohio boonies, so that's not gonna be a factor. I love racing games, and so do the kids. However, they're also gonna want to play other games as well (ages 7-11 right now). I don't really wanna spend over $300 for the system. What are my choices? what's the best bang for the buck?

Well, there's the Wii coming out, which is in your price range.
If you're looking for something with a large established game base, I would recommend sticking with the Playstation 2. It's definitely in your price range, no online stuff nesscessary, and has a large game base with racing games, games for 7-11 yr old range, etc. Also, the graphics don't suck.

I actually agree with the PS2 with your needs and price range. The slimline model is sexy and there is, as Kaliena pointed out, an enormous game library and good graphics. You don't need the snazzy new top of the line stuff. The only thing I would mention is the Gamecube has more party-type games, so if you want to get more than two people involved at once on the system, that might be worth getting the Wii, because it will play Gamecube games and will probably continue that tradition.

I've always gotten the impression that Nintendo's main goal is to create *fun* games, while other companies seem to have that as a secondary priority. I also think that the new controllers coming out for the Wii have huge potential. They look very intuitive and -- say it with me -- fun.
The Wii will also come out with games you can enjoy. The new Zelda coupled with any Metroid Primes that come out will provide you with more adult gameplay you want. I would go with the Wii, personally. But I'd want to see how it gets reviewed by the gaming gurus, first. I also don't really know whether they'll be available this Christmas...you never know how high the demand is. |

If you're into guitar rock, you might check out the Guitar Hero games for the PS2 as well. They're expensive, but LOADS of fun. GH can probably be had for $60 or less (for the game and guitar-shaped controller) these days, but GHII (which came out today) will run you $80 (for the game and controller). I'm not a big gamer, but I have spent many hours on Guitar Hero, and already 5 or so on GHII.
Also, I dunno if you have a Best Buy in your area, or if your BB will have the same deal, but my BB today had the following offer going: GH2 game and controller (the bundle costs $80 regularly), extra guitar (I think this is around $40 typically) to allow for multiplayer mode, and a PS2 console (I'm assuming this comes with the standard single controller) for around $200 (I think it might have been $209). I think the PS2 is running about $130 these days, so if you look at it as if you're paying full price for the game and controllers, you're basically getting the console for $70 or $80. Not a bad deal... |
