Battlefield 2142

Woo hoo! Only 18 days to go!
I'm a big fan of the Battlefield series and I'm really looking forward to the latest instalment.
I've got it on pre-order, so I'm getting my first rank for free, as soon as it arrives! I can't wait!

I'm very intereseted, i didnt preorder tho. The ideas for the new vehicles/aircraft seem really good. I hope the mechs handle well and dont tip easily.. and those harrier-like chopper/plane dealies look like they'll be interesting. flying as fast as a plane witht eh ability to swoop in and hover over an area like a chopper :P atleast from waht i can make out form the videos hehe.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_t6g0VLLY0

One thing looked like it was maybe an unmanned saucer drone aircraft maybe remote-piloted sorta like the droids were in the star wars mod for 1942 (galactic conquest).

Yeesh i just watched more videos and i peed a little. They seem to have taken so many ideas and crammed them into this game. Stuff from mods from their previus games and stuff like that. The customizable gear looks really good. I wonder how much of that stuff you'll ahve to unlock tho with ranks.

You can imagine how excited about this game I am. I've been a huge Battlefield fan since the first one came out years ago. The only thing that is somewhat annoying about 2142 is the seamingly less-detailed environments. In Battlefield 2, the levels all had a gritty, desert-storm type of feel to them, with incredible environmental graphics. 2142 looks like they're just concentrating on the metallic graphics. In some videos, I honestly think Battlefield 2 looks better than 2142. Hopefully it will improve before release. If this game is anything like the usual Battlefield games I'll be buying it.

I think there are a lot of features that aren't included in the demo, but it's still a lot of fun! There is only 4 kits to choose from in the demo, but I think there is going to be 7 in the full game.

Meh, I'd rather they fixed the issues with BF2 rather than release an entire new game. A friend of mine has wasted too much of his life trying to convice EA's tech support that they fucked him on ranks & unlocks. As of now, the genre has lost its flavor for me. I may play another game in this style if a developer other than EA makes a good one.

Man they keep releasing more and more games then expansions on top of that. I can't help but think they are putting out so many titles just to make a ton of money and they are no so worried about the content they are putting out. I could be wrong but that is the impression I'm starting to get from EA.

That's EA's modus operandi.

Instead, I recommend checking out ET:Quake Wars (www.enemyterritory.com) which should be out early next year.

This game is pretty awesome. I've been playing it with my WoW guild and we're having a blast. I pre-ordered it at EB already. I find it 110% amusing that this game runs smoother than Battlefield 2 with the graphics on high, 2x AA, with an engine that is tweaked to look better than BF2. Looks like DICE has finally fixed their memory-hog engine that put top end systems in the ditch!!

The sound effects and whole atmosphere of this game is so cool. I recommend everyone try it.

I've got it preloaded on the EA downloader and their countdown says 15 hours to release...so I think we'll see it tomorrow.

Also, note the 1.1 patch is already out, lol. I love the BF games too, after getting into them late with Vietnam. I did the beta for this and have been playing the demo a lot. I'm really looking forward to Titan mode, it's a blast.

The ingame advertising and the notice included with the boxed copy about the adware is a little creepy though.

But I really can't get hyped up over that issue as I use gmail and many other things like itunes store recommendations, amazon for shopping, barnes and noble member card and a tivo.

Everyone else has my viewing habits, why not EA?

I don't get why everyone is blowing the adware thing out of proportion. It states clearly that the advertiser thing does NOT track your viewing habits, does not track your internet activity, does not track your bandwidth or anything related to you or your address. All it does is send your IP to EA. That's been going on since Battlefield 2...really nothing new here. The "adware" in 2142 can probably be considered adware, but the ads are displayed only in-game, not outside, so it doesn't affect anything to tell you the truth.

Yea, the follow up from EA makes it much less creepy. Given that I work in advertising, I'm interested in how they determine the impression data on ad views. For example, if I hide like a bitch from a mecha behind a billboard, does EA think I viewed the ad?

"The advertising program in Battlefield 2142 does not access any files which are not directly related to the game. It does not capture personal data such as cookies, account login detail, or surfing history. BF 2142 delivers ads by region. The advertising system uses a player's IP address to determine the region of the player, assisting to serve the appropriate ads by region and language. For instance, a player in Paris might be presented with ads in French. The information collected will not be repurposed for other uses. Battlefield 2142 also tracks "impression data" related to in-game advertisements: location of a billboard in the game, brand advertised, duration of advertisement impression, etc. This information is used to help advertisers qualify the reach of a given advertisement."

I'm just waiting for my g/f to go out so I can start playing it un-nagged!

The whole issue of the ads doesn't really bother me, they're just going to be ads that constantly change.
It's not like they're gonna search my HD, see that I watch porn and start advertising Jenna Jameson's latest.

I don't think the ad system is live yet, so I think we see generic ingame ads where the real ads will be. As long as the ads aren't intrusive and somewhat fit the theme of the game, I don't care at all... I've seen so many people getting up in arms about this advertisement thing, calling it adware, or spyware, but I just look at it like this:

EA is providing a service for us besides just releasing the game. They provide a login server so everybody can have a unique name that nobody else can steal (unless somebody steals your name before you can register, which happened to me ). On top of that they provide a detailed ranking/rewards system, medals, unlocks, stats tracking for yourself and other players, and a buddy list that currently works better than steam's buddy list (I STILL can't add my friends to steam and see what they're playing and join their server...). EA is providing this free of charge, but I can guarantee maintaining the servers that run all of this stuff is NOT free.

So yeah, I'm probably preaching to the choir here, but it annoys me that some people are so desperate for something to bitch about, that they'd point this thing out and make such a big deal about it. The ingame ads aren't a big enough reason to deprive yourself of this awesome game.

Bingo. People get hot and flustered when they get a chance to bitch about something, even if it's not proven or even tested.

Well, I'm one of those people who did not purchase BF2142. This is mainly due to EA's poor patching and nerfing of BF2. I was on the fence about getting 2142, but then I read about the whole ad system and the possible requirement to remove some security patches from Windows, and it was enough to dissuade me from getting it. If EA had done a better job with BF2 and not included this ad system, I would have purchased this game. I have 32 people on my x-fire list, which is a mix of CSS, WOW, and BF2 players, and I have only seen one person playing BF2142. Hopefully (but doubtfully) EA learns a lesson from this: if you provide poor support and a spying ad system, consumers will show you how they feel by spending their money elsewhere.

I have the official letter from DICE explaining how the "spyware/adware" works and it's official that all it does is use your IP to determine what part of the world you're in so the ads are in the correct language. That's it. Tech review sites have pictures of the little slip of paper that came with BF2 and that's it. It's almost like none of them have even played the damn game because there are currently no noticeable ads in BF2142 and it's publicly and official stated that the tracker simply uses your IP to determine what country you're in. Even well-known tech sites are mindlessly bashing EA because they're so easy to bash without even testing what they're preaching.

Hell, it's even posted in this very thread, direct from DICE:

Quote:

I'm not a supporter of DICE or EA. I just know that corporations (companies owned by stockholders) cannot simply post false information about electronic privacy on their main webpage without being rammed in the ass with lawsuits. So if it's posted on their mainpage, then it's the truth.

What really pisses me off is that I paid FULL PRICE for my television, and I still have to watch these stupid commercials! I makes me SO mad when I watch "24" and see them use an apple computer. They are shoving their products down my throat. I own two apple laptops now, one is plain silver for everyday use, but I purchased a pink one for homosexual fridays at the office. It really is a big hit, that pink laptop has served as a catalyst for many a crazy friday nights.

But I digress, these intrusive and offensive advertisements must stop.

I pay taxes for these roads, but when I drive I still have to look at these billboards that just toally divert my attention away from whatever I'm doing. I've found myself face down in a ditch at 4:23AM gargling a throatful of mud, with the last thing I remember being a Burger King billboard... The tasty plump delicious whopper, golden crisp fries fresh out of the fryer, still lightly sizzling. It's just too much, I can't pay attention to anything else.

These ads are taking over my life, I can't live with them pushing themselves into everything I do. Somebody help me.

I'm an avid 24 fan as well, but unlike BF2142 the FOX network doesn't scan my living room for information on where I live or anything else they may want to know in the future.

Some people are comfortable with that while others are not. Hopefully EA realizes they lost a lot of potential customers over this advertising system.

Also, in my informal, non-scientific, observation of my x-fire list, I have still only seen one person playing BF2142. I asked my friend if he liked it and he said it was ok, that it was probably worth around $20, but not $50.

Guys, read up more on this. They read your IP address solely so that they target you with ads in the right language :P. If you live in France you're not gonna get German ads, etc. The other info they read is all in-game, like which ads you viewed in the game. The ads are on like billboards on the side of the road, but they're not obvious or anything, I haven't even noticed them yet. It's not really a big deal at all. If it makes the games cheaper, then you ignore a bit of advertising!

EDIT:

Also, there are many, many people playing, and it's definitely worth the $50. Awesome game.

It was also stated above that the ad system isn't fully implemented yet, so I will wait and see where it goes before I consider buying it. The "not really a big deal at all" may change - or maybe not. We'll have to wait and see.

Besides - with NWN2 coming out next week and M:TW2 next month I won't have the time.
