PS2

I have a ps2 and it just dumped on me. I cant get it to read games or dvds.
I went to a local game store and was told that i would be better off buying a new system than repairing it. has anyone had this problem?

I suggest you get a quote from Sony's customer service.

I don't think it would cost more to repair than to buy a new one, but it would sure be good for local game store if you did.

Well, you have two choices....

1) Have someone repair it, which unless it is sony, would void your warranty.

2) Buy a new one.

3) Buy a used one or trade the old one in without telling them that it is broken. If you have a older generation system, then you could use the reasoning of wanting the newer slim PS2's.

However, it might be better to purchase a new or used system for the fact that they will have a warranty if they break down.

By the way, how old is your PS2?

Is it out of warranty?

I bought a second hand replacement for mine. I didn't want a slimline one because of the issues with it. That might be your best bet

djflish, what issues have you had with the slimline? I've had my slimline PS2 for months now without problems, I picked it up after my phat-PS2 took a dump.

If you go to an EB/Gamestop there's a deal going on in July (I think, don't quote me) where you get an extra $20 in trade-in value on used current-gen systems. Take advantage of that, and pick up the slimline PS2. It's so much more reliable than the phat PS2.

Personally, I've never had any issues with it, but I've heard that there have been overheating problems and that they only accept official PS2 peripherals.

The overheating problems with the slimline PS2 are of the same nature of the 360's overheating problems - just keep the console off a carpeted surface and in a well ventillated area, and it should be fine.

As for the official PS2 peripherals, that's semi-false. If you're one of the few people that play multiplayer games on the PS2 (read: multiplayer as in 3-4 players) then you can't use the Multitap that you used on the Phat-PS2. The solution to that is to pick up a SCPH-70xxx series Sony brand multitap (it'll say on the box it's for the slimline), although many 3rd party brands have multitaps that work on both the Phat and Slimline PS2's.

The only other difference in peripherals is the power supply, since the Slimline uses DC input/external AC brick, while the Phat uses a straight AC-input. But that will be in the package, so you should be set otherwise.

Edit: Oh! My favorite peripheral change! The IR sensor for the DVD remote is built into the slimline (technically it was also built into the 50xxx series but I dont think that made it out of Japan). The new DVD remote had a power button on it, so you can turn your PS2 on/off/reset with it! Coupled with my Logitech wireless controllers, I don't have to get up to play my PS2 games!
