EQ2 Revisited

As a long-term EQ1 player (6 years or so), I was excited to try EQ2 when it came out. I bought the game the day of launch, and 15 days into my 30-day trial I quit playing. The main thing I did not like was that for levels 1-10 you are too similar to all of the other classes.

Recently I started hearing about many changes that have occured over the past 9 months or so. All classes have been re-evaluated and many many spells have been changed (mostly upgraded). Very recently it has been changed so that you choose class at level 1. This was a great change; a level 1 wizard actually feels like a wizard.

With the new expansion, Kingdom of Sky, that just came out this week they have added Alternate Advancement points, similar to EQ1 but you are limited in the number you can get, and it's a "tree" of skills like diablo 2 and i think WoW(?) Each class basically has 5 paths to choose from, unless they want to dabble in each and be 'weaker'.

For the tradeskillers, exp has been doubled PLUS vitality and with the update coming very soon, subcombines will be gone.

There are many more things I cant think of at the moment, maybe others can add to this, but I just want to say Sony did a great job of turning this game around -- I dont think it was too late either, I keep coming across TONS of people who have just decided to give the game a try again.

Sony also revamped Star Wars Galaxies a while back, and most people feel it was for the worse. One big complaint is that, in an attempt to satisfy consumers they made it easier to become a Jedi, resulting in a galaxy full of Jedi. This ruins the Star Wars atmosphere, and the awe-inspiring nature of Jedi. I remember back in the day, if you saw a Jedi character, you were tellin everyone you knew about it. Now, you most likely have 20 Jedi in your clan.

I personally have given up on all MMORPGs. There's just something very unfulfilling about a world where everything you kill respawns, and nothing you do ever makes a difference in the game-world. There were some exhilirating moments of PVP in WoW, but those were very rare.

I agree about the unfulfillment. It's a tiring circle of killing tough monsters to get better gear so you can kill tougher monsters. However, I have always liked sony's (EQ and EQ2) world-changing events. The Sleeper in EQ1 was pretty sweet as well as the recent EQ2 event of rebuilding the wizard spires.

I may have to take a look at it then when the semester is over. WoW got stale.

I played wow when I took a break from EQ2. That, and after playing eq1 since the day it came out, I still think that after 19 Live updates EQ2 is by far the best mmorpg out there. Tons more quests, more individualism in the classes, guild instanced raids, world events all the time.

I led a guild in eq1, leading one in eq2 now. Guilds gain levels based on how many quests and how involved its members are and as guilds grow, more features of the world are unlocked. That was a big clincher for me. That and there is just so much more end game content in eq2 than in WoW.

If you give it another try, try the Unrest server and send a tell to Karmatic. I'll see if I can help you figure out the game a bit more :")

Aye, I'm very happy with what they've done with EQ2. And if its any testament to its success, I got a GIRL to play it!!! A MMORPG! It MUST be good. :)

My wife plays heh. New guildies still get wierded out when they log into teamspeak and see how many female characters are actually women :p
