Tutu ate 81! ...oink

ring 07-02-2010 11:35 AM

Hi, Nick.

Any cake left? My mother's neighbor made us some banana bread.

Weekends & holidays are very quiet here at TFP.

It's good evidence that people have lives.

Ourcrazymodern? 07-02-2010 01:48 PM

It could be circumstantial,
but I think we must consider well
that dead folks cannot post here.

Jetée 07-02-2010 01:57 PM

You keep bringing it back... and I find it just a bit disheartening that poltergeists cannot properly utilize technology (though, some horror films, namely a few Polish & Japanese ones, would have you think otherwise).

could I please see a show of hands of those that may like to see that topic about "History of Sayings" be brought forth and started today? I'll need some help with it, though, because I have not yet come to find one all-encompassing resource (ie, website/blog) that has meandered into, and dedicated themselves to thi aim.

I think the first phrase I should try to track down the origins to is "the Ghost in the Machine".

PS
(this topic of mine has stayed in the back of mind for over four years now, when just by happenstance, I noticed on the shelf of my fairly attractive psychology professor friend's bookcase a dusty old book that had very antiquated relics of speech, and where and when they came into the popular vernacular of casual conversations amongst English practioners. The only entry I read in the book was something about a saying on candles, or the light from them, I think, before I hastily put it back in its place. With my fondness for knowledge, I'm not sure why I didn't just "borrow" the book at the time.)

Ourcrazymodern? 07-02-2010 02:13 PM

The ghost in the machine distinguished the mind from the body - said to have been coined by Gilbert Ryle in 1949. I wonder about the nature of memory, often, but that one was in there, so I'll wonder again.

ring 07-02-2010 02:14 PM

Finding one all-encompassing source? No, while desirable, highly unlikely.

That's a superb idea for a thread, and I believe numerous people would
enjoy adding their contributions.

"What is the origin of "get a life"?
(Etymology)

...getting a life might have originally had something to do with getting another life as in the video games when your little guys got knocked off. I used to hear kids asking how many lives the other guy had left, etc. I'll 'get a life' if I ... So the expression or words 'get a life' could have fist appeared, in the 80's, but not quite with its present connotations.

It may next (or concurrently) have begun to be used by computer geeks who would spend hours on end at their terminals, and their PC became their life. They would be told kiddingly, or not so kiddingly, by friends, family, and other hackers to 'get a life.' No definite documentation or dates for this, however.

The first big-time use of the word in the media was in a 1987 Saturday Night Live skit in which William Shatner, Captain Kirk of Star Trek, does a parody on Trekkie fans. In the sketch, he is the guest of honor at a Star Trek convention. He is asked by fanatical fans wearing pointy ears, several trivia questions concerning the exact combinations of safes he had opened on various episodes (e.g. what was the combination to the safe in episode #38?). He tells these people at the end of the skit to 'move out of your mothers basement' and GET A LIFE...

From the American Heritage Dictionary of Idioms

get a life

Acquire some interests or relationships of one's own. For example, Stop sitting around and complaining-get a life. [Slang; late 1900s]

From the Jargon Dictionary: Get a life! imperative. Hacker-standard way of suggesting that the person to whom it is directed has succumbed to terminal geekdom (see computer geek). Often heard on Usenet, esp. as a way of suggesting that the target is taking some obscure issue of theology too seriously. This exhortation was popularized by William Shatner on a 1987 "Saturday Night Live" episode in a speech that ended "Get a life!", but some respondents believe it to have been in use before then. It was certainly in wide use among hackers for years before achieving mainstream currency via the sitcom "Get A Life" in 1990.

Oh, and OCM? took my bait and ran with it.

Jetée 07-02-2010 02:29 PM

Very nice. Very nearly left me speechless, but here I am responding.

I'll be back in a bit, and hopefully, probably, and with good luck timing on my side, I'll hash out the details, forewords and whatever else I believe I may need to start the topic and get it spinning (like a top... I used to love tops) from here on out.

Additionally, I think I'll get my threads pertinent to, and about: "The Red Button" and "Film Trailers" out of the way tonight as well.

Last word: I'm not very creative at thinking up good thread titles, and I have a certain predilection that I don't start threads without one in mind; so, do you think that "The History of Sayings" is as good as it gets, or do you have any ideas to rearranging the title so it fits perfectly with the premise? I'm all ears for any suggestions. (like should 'coined' appear in the title, or the thread's opening description?)

ring 07-02-2010 02:38 PM

BadNick 07-02-2010 03:04 PM

hi everyone. Our neighborhood is also quite quiet on weekends during summer. Many seem to leave to go to the shore or up the mountains, which is a perfect reason for me to stay here. Our borough is having their fireworks tomorrow and they are usually some of the best around here, not to mention they let you sit really really close.

ring, I'm saving the last piece of cake for a midnight snack tonight, with a cold glass of milk...I'm sprinkling fresh blueberries all over it since I have a couple pints, a very sweet batch. Thanks again.

Ourcrazymodern? 07-02-2010 05:35 PM

When we were younger,
weekend exodus we did,
attempting escape.

Being in town on the weekends is often more peaceful than campgrounds or traffic or in-laws, so in retrospect it seems it might have been a silly practice to join the crowd so often.

Jetée 07-02-2010 07:03 PM

Darn. I'm really, really late.

I'll have to buckle down and work to see if I can create those three threads in time.

Jet,
I think I'm hypnotized. Tell me to do something and let's see if I do it.

Jetée 07-02-2010 08:36 PM

Why are you hypnotized, Nick? That article? Did you read the whole thing? It looked pretty long; I think i only glanced at four words and two pictures, realized it might be share-worthy, shared it, and then afterwards, thought to sit down and read about it.

Did you learn something worthwhile, then? Discuss with the class.

Zooksport2 07-02-2010 08:45 PM

I wonder if the clown has ever fallen in? He is very close to the edge of the harbour...

Jetée 07-02-2010 08:46 PM

Could you clue me into your context, zooks?

What clown? Are there crocodiles near the clown?

Are you trying to model my behaviour?

Neuro-Linguistic Programming(NLP)
NLP teaches that the mind-body (neuro) and what is said (language) all interact to form perceptions of the world (programming). By using NLP you can ‘model” the more successful parts of your own, or another person’s behaviour and reproduce it in less successful areas of your life. By changing your perception, you can improve your attitudes and actions

I'll hunt around and use this clue to hopefully find you.

Jetée 07-02-2010 08:52 PM

Another coincidence. I recently was re-clued into what NLP is, and its usage in modern-day examples, but I've forgotten where exaclty I saw it last. It was within the past few days, that much I know.

Ninja Turtles? Cosby show? I wonder, where, O where I misplaced the anecdote?

BadNick 07-02-2010 09:01 PM

I think I'm either hypnotized, or just very tired. My eyes are heavy. I am getting sleepy. I am feeling very relaxed. When I snap my fingers, I am going to bed.

Jetée 07-02-2010 09:10 PM

for months now, it laid dormant; I'm not going to posts this into my "micro blog".

but, to not let it waste, sweet dreams:

BadNick 07-03-2010 07:46 AM

That poor little mammoth probably drowned. Or some crazy cavemen ran it into the ground. Probably Al Gore had something to do with it, too.

Happy Saturday, BadNick!

BadNick 07-03-2010 08:17 AM

and to you, too, Ocm?

It's a beautiful, sunny, not too warm Saturday here, hope it is where you are, too. Fireworks tonight in town, tomorrow down in Philly at Penn's Landing down by the Delaware. I'm firing up the grill to burn some meat. Good times. Also have to cut up this tree laying in my driveway into manageable chunks.

On and off since it was opened in 1963 King of Prussia Mall has been the largest mall in the world, but currently it is not. I generally hate malls but the "Plaza" part is a nice stroll, moreso than the "Court" part.

Ourcrazymodern? 07-05-2010 09:00 AM

The Mall of America,
just down the tracks under the airport,
is good for people-watching.

(I only go there when out-of-town visitors want to.)
