Alright, so its not a gimme question. My alberta/mountain bias is showing.
Its on the Continental Divide, and as it is south of Banff, it also falls on the Alberta BC Border. At least I think it does. I tried to get to it once a few summers back, but the rangers have closed the bike paths and the hike was too long for my motivation. That winter we did a little light touring and made it pretty close, starting at just outside of Sunshine Village. We made it to an icefield south of this peak then were concerned about daylight and weather and headed out. I think its also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. edit; wait, if I was heading south, and the mountain was south of me, then I was north of the mountain. I've been 3 times. and yes, everytime is magical. I've been to the Alps, and they don't have anything to the Rockies... Your hints are very detailed. But I'llhave to beg out of this. Can a mod get our forum back? maybe it will drive up participation. |

Oh man, I think you are right about the Sask. Leg. I think I even found the same photo. A little too late though.

You said it was taken before any of us were born, leads me to believe it was probably completed before any of us were born as well. I can't decide if it is a bridge or a giant wall of some kind, I couldn't see a building or wall being needed that is that long so I am going to go with bridge, probably train. That leaves me with one idea
Lethbridge Viaduct, aka "High Level Bridge" |

I am gonna guess it is the construction of the Howe Truss bridge over the Pembina River at Manola. Noooooooooo wait......I changed my mind. My newest and more correctest guess is the Rochfort Trestle bridge in Mayerthorpe. Last edited by owlbill; 12-07-2007 at 08:09 AM.. Reason: Automerged Doublepost |

Both are sound guesses, but not what I'm looking for. This was also a project related to railway expansion, but it is a project more associated with Romans than early Albertans.
I think we've already had the Lethbridge Viaduct in this thread. There are some impressive pictures somewhere in the previous 2000 posts. I'm also a structure nerd (Howe Truss!) and a Pembina valley local/fan, but this is the first I've heard of that bridge. Nice. Also, go ahead and take the guesses, there are no penalties for guessing wrong. I don't return to the thread unless someone has posted and I tend to give out hints with each post. |

I've been at work for a full 30 minutes now and I have done nothing but respond to emails. They keep coming in. Including ones from the TFP.
It is the Brooks aqueduct. It is pretty impressive; not Roman Empire impressive, but cool nonetheless. http://www.engineering.ualberta.ca/u...42&issue=42828 Nice arctivle on the Brooks Aqueduct if you the time and interest to read it. I'd guess the date is October 30, 1995.
I can't place the location yet. My first thought was just outside the gates of Old Quebec. I know I've seen that row of statues in person, but its been so long since I've been in the east, all the cities blend together. So no, not in Quebec. I realized I was thinking of the 'hotel du parliment' and those statues are on the ground. The Marie-Reine-du-Monde Cathedral, Montreal? (Mary-Queen of the frickin World to the anglophones) Last edited by Bossnass; 12-11-2007 at 12:50 PM.. |

The date is October 27th, 1995.
That is the Queen Elizabeth Hotel on the right in the background. I had to crop down the pic to remove the "Queen Elizabeth". That is Place Ville Marie in the back on the left. That is Mary Queen of the World Cathedral. This makes it Downtown Montreal on Renee Levesque street in between Dorchester Square and Place du Canada. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=e...&t=h&z=17&om=1 Bossnass had it right.

Yeah. I thought I'd be a little tricky because I've personally posted it before, from a more standard angle. Of course, that was a while ago, so a newer participant wouldn't know that I've posted it before and that we try not to repeat pictures.
Game on bill. |
