Conrad Black on Trial in Chicago
So, Lord Black of Crossharbour is on trial for fraud; Enron style. On one hand I don't care about his fate or the trial. I don't see the broad impact of his indictment on the greater public. He's just another arrogant executive losing his shirt. I also believe that the press coverage is a bit excessive and has a lot to do with the Canadian News media's history with Black as an owner and competitor.
And yet there a number of interesting angles to the story: His galling new citizenship bid, extensive political connections and the heavy hitting legal teams on both sides. It also hard not to shake that peculiarily Canadian habit of secretly being proud to have one of our own in the international spotlight, no matter what the reason. Will you be following the trial? Do you think he will succeed in his citizenship bid? Link: http://sympaticomsn.ctv.ca/servlet/A...chicago_051201 Quote:

I will be following this trial but not avidly.
Black is just one of those characters that I love to hate. His arrogance knows no bounds. If he's guilty I suspect he will get off lightly and will build another fortune. I find it interesting that he was allowed to come back into Canada. I am sure if Chretien where still in power he would have found a way to tweak Black's nose again and give him a hassle at the border. I really hope he doesn't get his citizenship back... Citizenship should not be taken (or surrendered) lightly. He makes a mockery of it.

I've been getting my hair cut at a little shop off of King and Yonge (on Victoria st) since I had a lot of hair (1988 - ish). These guys have been running the shop since '63 when it used to be in the King Eddy. Well, a lot of people go there from the area, and I've sat next to such people as Black, Rogers, the Eaton boys, and last weekend, some supposedly Iranian 'mafia' guys who tipped $50 for a $14 cut....
It's funny to hear them chat with us. It seems that the barber shop is the great equalizer, as the discussion was down to earth, almost mundane in all cases - except for the Eaton kids who seemed intent on displaying their pedigree. I will be following the trial, if only because I am curious about the two sides of Black that I have seen.

Leto... that's very cool. I wouldn't have imagined that Black would go for the $14 haircut. I wouldn't think Barbara would let him be so pedestrian.
Hollinger's offices are just around the corner on Toronto St. so I suppose that place is his local. The barbershop as the great leveler... I like it.

I used to do work for Black, (and Barbara) and have been to their house in the Bridle Path on Park Lane Rd many times (not as a "peer" of course, just as mid-priced labour).
I'll follow the case, just because of that connection. He tipped well, as everyone who ever dealt with him will tell you.

I believe these fraud charges fall under the category of "it couldn't have happened to a nicer guy".
I'll catch up when the results are out, and maybe read an article about the trial here and there, but I don't much care for the in-between drama.
