How do you call in sick to work?
This is the message I e-mailed to my supervisor this morning:
To whom it may concern: Due to forces beyond my control, I find myself trapped, in a metaphorical sense, and unable to man my post in the war to bring order to chaos in the world of telescope design. I shall return Monday to fight the good fight yet again. Peace out, yo. Fortunately, the place I work at now doesn't really want an excuse, they just want to be notified of absense. But in the past (at other jobs) I've taken "mental health" days off by claiming physical illness. On a planet inhabited by 6 billion people (give or take), I suspect I'm not the only one. So how do you call in sick to work? Do you fake cough? Do you try to make your voice sound weak? When faking sick do you find it helps to limp around the house holding your stomach in an attempt to get "in character"? Please, share with the group.

I have two approaches. One, call in before anyone is answering the phones, so I can just leave a message. That'll be early enough that I'm groggy, so that's good enough for sounding sick. The second approach is to have my wife call in for me.

I haven't called in sick in decades.. I need to... my company - eh - call up - say I just don't feel like coming to work today - see ya tomorrow...
Long as there aren't any major projects due it's all good.

I can do 90% of my work from home. If I'm feeling contagious, I'll work from home. If I'm actually to sick to work (hasn't happened in 7-8 years) I'd call in.
I have more vacation time and personal days off than I can use. If there is 2' of fresh powder at Vail and I want a day off to go skiing, I'll call in (or IM) and tell them the truth. I put up with a lot of crap at work, they can put up with my skiing obsession. |

I remember one time I wanted to call in sick, so I went and got a glass of ice water and walked into the bathroom and called my employer.
Well...I told him I wasn't feeling well and that I had thrown up a couple times earlier this morning. Than I pulled the "Oh man...hang on." I dumped the glass of ice water into the toilet and made some moaning noises. I got back on the phone apologized and, of course, just as planned he said, "Just take the day off, we don't want you here." |
