Australia dominated sports.
For some reason I really dont like australia dominated sports, such as league, cricket and union, I know this will sound Un-Australian of me but sometimes I dont mind it when we lose to be honest, or when we get tested at a sport, when we got beaten against the NZ in the league I was actually kind of happy, because in the next games aus will have to work to win and it wont be a pushover.
What does everyone this? |

well i kinda felt sad we lost the ashes cos i do think the aussies are the worlds best. but i also thought we needed a reality check and a good kick in the ass,...besides, some of our aussie sportstars have too much of an attitude..some of our cricketers and league players think they're king shit...does the underarm bowl ring a bell... or racial slurs on league and cricket....what about the CMOOOONNNNNNN's in tennis by that little brat..whatshisname...
where are the good times when we had people like andrew gaze....john eales..pat rafter and suzie o'niel represent us... not too many ambassadors of aussie sprt at the moment.. i think they are all busy doing cereal commercials or something...its gotta be Bonds....

Australia has some amazing sportspeople, though, considering the size of our population - and also manage to compete quite well in sports that are played around the world, like Hockey, Netball, triathlon. I think the real sports that stand out as Australia only (almost) are AFL and League.
League at least has some international ability (both NZ and UK are at least competing) - I think for these two sports the elite level is club games during the season (premiership winning). However, I agree that the days of playing sport for sports sake seem to be gone and that is a shame.

in the age of proffesionalism in sport, aggression has come about due to prizemoney and bonuses. so really its become a little vain.
theres nothing wrong with a little bit of biff..especially in the contact sports. hell, if i didnt see a biff in state of origin, id be disappointed. but what happens onfield stays onfield. these days its becoming personal,a nd the media has a fair bit to do with it. post match conferences seem to be knitpicking and causing friction between players. ive notices this of late especially in tennis. i do agree, that australia does do very well considering its populace. but we also need to take into consideration that a nation like india for example with a population of 1 billion people, does not have the coaching and nurchuring of sportspeople like we do. we have institutions where we can afford that for our kids... half the pakistani cricket team was found playing cricket on the streets....also tells us why first world countries are usually on top of the medal tallies in the olympics, and why large african thrid world nations tend to be at the bottom i must say i did rejoice when bangladesh beat the aussies in that one day a few months back now...

In cricket I prefer the matches to be close even if Australia loses (maybe next year I won't mind as much though ). Like dlishguy I also enjoy it when the underdog wins occasionly. I still classify myself as a fan of the Australian cricket team though. In sports like soccer however I support my home country (Germany) and due to being part Greek (my mother is Greek), I also support Greece.

Yes, Australians can get that carried away with their sports . I always find it amazing when a football Player gets on the front page of the newspaper or is the lead item on the TV newscasts just because he has injured himself or has been reported for some reason, etc.

Very simply (but very well) put. Some of the stuff that makes top news stories is crazy. I can understand if it's a Grand Final or something, but sometimes week-to-week stuff gets up there. Maybe it's just a slow news day |
