I was so happy to get it for 98.9 in Barrie today!

Poor guy beside me at the other pump had to fill his Expedition. No idea what the final number was but he was at $75 and counting!

optik_nerve 08-13-2005 02:50 PM

wtf. I can only dream of prices like that. I know I shouldn't be posting here since I live in Florida but the current price here today is 2.51...for unleaded.

GAH!

GAH!

2.51/gallon? I'd fill up on that in an instant. It hit 102.9/Litre here today... Which is a quarter of a gallon. So we're paying $4 a gallon. It's entirely uncool.

I take the bus.

highthief 08-14-2005 02:37 AM

Heh, silly American!

;)

IC3 08-14-2005 08:54 AM

My tank only holds 30 litres, So i put in like 20 dollars at a time and still get pretty much a full tank.

Highest i seen it here in kitchener was couple days ago at 99.4 cents/Litre, I almost pissed myself.

I get really good gas mileage and it's a 3 to 4km drive to work.

Those poor SUV drivers

Daniel_ 08-14-2005 09:17 AM

I'm paying £0.99/litre for 98octane unleaded.

There are about 4.5litres per gallon, and about US$1.50 per £1.

So that means that I'm paying about US$8 per gallon.

Ouch....

Just a little less ;)

BigBen 08-14-2005 03:29 PM

1.06 here...

People are actually talking to the gas attendants now, like they need personal comfort when filling with gas.

Will this stop the Expeditions and Escalades? I don't know.

It did seem like a big psychological barrier, though.

The number 1 is over to the left of the other 3 numbers, so it is not lit up at night by those signs which take 3 numbers. It looks like 6 cents per litre when you drive at night. Haha!

Lucifer 08-14-2005 04:56 PM

I just saw it at 98.3 downtown. Last week when it was cheaper everywhere else in Canada, it was already over a buck in Newfoundland.

feelgood 08-14-2005 05:29 PM

There's talks of trying to get the government to at least reduce the tax on fuel price

cellophanedeity 08-14-2005 07:50 PM

I think it's fair.

We're running out of fuel and using it even more than we used to.

Hopefully this will help cut back on SUVs.

Yeah, along with the talks to supply free icecream to everyone... pfft. Never happen. never never never.

Gas has been artificially cheap in North America for 20 years now anyway (as already pointed out by the British poster), time to start getting used to it and make plans to drive less.

Now all we can do is sit tight and wait for the junk emails to make their rounds detailing pointless schemes to "beat the oil companies."

If you are an SUV driver, avert your eyes now.

Averted? Good.

Still not? You're a naughty one.

That's what the douchebag gets for driving an SUV around with probably no purpose other than to artificially extend his penis.

highthief 08-15-2005 03:47 AM

Well, to be fair, he was towing a trailer behind him. Your average Honda civic won't do much good in that situation.

But by and large, as there seems to be no headway being made to seriously develop alternative fuel sources, I would not be opposed to new standards being imposed on passenger vehicles. Something like, for any vehicle that carries more than 3 people (gotta give the tradespeople and farmers with their pick ups and panel vans a break), a minimum of 35mpg highway must be obtained.

Janey 08-15-2005 05:02 AM

filled up for 86.5 on Friday. (Vic Pk & York Mills in toronto) look for gas in the evening, it can be 5 cents/litre cheaper than in the morning. (that's about 20 cents per gallon cheaper!).

This morning it's $1.02/litre everywhere.

Charlatan 08-15-2005 05:27 AM

Drove Lindsay this weekend and the prices on gasoline alley on the 35/115 were all in the range of .95 to .97 /litre...

I think it is pretty funny that many of the gas stations can't post the rate because they only have room for three numbers.

We shouldn't be too surprised by this and don't expect the government to bring the taxes down much. I mean really, they bring the taxes down and they what? The gas companies are STILL going to raise the price and we will be back above the one dollar mark again.

Just look at what they pay for fuel in Europe. We are still getting cheap gas.

The chickens have come home to roost. We built our suburban sprawl around the automobile. Now we have to start paying the price for that lifestyle. Believe me, there are more expenses coming soon...

Me? I drive my Vespa to and from work and it still only costs me just over $5 to fill it every week. If I am not riding my scooter I am taking public transit or walking.

I sold my gas guzzling Jeep about four years ago and as much as I miss it, will never go back.

I remember the comedian talking about the 'Oil crisis' and how we were running out of fuel:

"Yeah, we are running out of fuel. We're running out of that 35 cents a litre fuel. We have enough of the 75 cents per litre stuff. A buck a litre? We have a whole shit-load of that stuff lying around!"

I enjoy talks about lowering taxes on fuel. THE GOVERNMENT WILL NEVER DO THAT, even the crazy people who hate taxes. Would you lower taxes, even though it is providing you with windfall revenue? Better to spend the money and make yourself look benevolent.

We amateur economists look at this situation like a social experiment: What is the choke price? When will people say "that's too much, Bob!"

There are theories that propose that the living wage is pegged to the price of oil, with a little bit of lag. Ask yourself if you have recieved a raise in pay in the last year. How much was it? Definitely not enough to cover the price at the pumps.

BTW, at 1.06, am I paying the most out of all the canadians?

Charlatan 08-15-2005 08:21 AM

In Europe almost everyone drives standard. Diesel engines are the norm. Large gas guzzling cars are uncommon.

They have been living with expensive fuel for some time and their car market has adjusted accordingly.

My question is will the higher price of gas drive us to invest more money in public transit, higher density housing and more fuel efficient car?

hossified 08-15-2005 08:45 AM

lack of supply??? please....there is enough oil reserves to supply us for the next 400 years!!! I'm reminded of the debeers group and what they have done with diamonds! It's complete bs......whoever controls fuel, controls the world! This whole blaming it on iraq is bs too, as only 25% of the worlds fuel comes from there. In Canada at least, take a look ot your receipt and see how much the gov. takes in tax....your 50$ of gas is about 19$ in tax!!!! I think the gov should ease up or else we are going to be in a major recession due to travelelling costs....

I think it is less of a DeBeers situation and more of an Enron situation. Someone, somewhere, is gaming the system and making a profit on the margins. Speculators suck. I just which we knew who it was this time.

rideough 08-15-2005 12:04 PM

It just hit $1.03 in Ottawa today...not happy as an suv driver...but its only a Vitara which gets good gas mileage(same as my Accord did) with only a 69L tank. My wife calls it a tall car. I call it the reason I'll be buying a motorbike! Damn fuel prices..ack!

Janey 08-15-2005 12:14 PM

charl , you and red lemon are sharing avitars??? what's next? I shudder to think ...

what do you drive in the winter, when you have to do shopping runs or head out with the family & dog?

this is classic. it is the base of all of the so-called "water empires" of the past..

Darn. I live near there. Missed out on cheap gas :(

But then again, I never get cheap gas unless the station is empty. Somehow, saving $5 brings out the worst in people.

bigbad 08-16-2005 04:28 AM

I saw it at 112.2 here in Vancouver today, when I started driving like 8 years ago I remember paying 29.9. Luckily Translink takes me wherever I need to go.

Seanland 08-17-2005 06:31 AM

Mother Fucker!!!!

106.9!!

wtf?

its multiplying exponentially!!
Yesterday night... 106.9... thats 10 cents in a matter of days... I remember when ppl used to bitch about half a cent

Sticky 08-17-2005 10:44 AM

Here is my 2 cents or $1.149.

If the government is going to continue to take the same percentage which means that they are raking in the dough even more as the price increases then they should at least be puring it back into improving the roads and public transportation.

At one of the highest rates here in Quebec the roads sucks and they are even considering introducing a new tax - The Pot Hole tax.

About reducing teh use of SUVs - think again. Who is this increase in price going to hurt? The people who are on tighter budgets with less disposable income. The people that are probably driving cheaper and more economical cars.
Will the SUV driver be hurt? some maybe but others have the disposable income.
This is not an effective way to get people to stop driving their SUVs. It should soon get people to start reconsidering public transport or carpooling.

highthief 08-17-2005 11:34 AM

Agreed here. The gasoline tax the government rakes in is based on a percentage of the overall price. The government has a vested interest in seeing 1.09 a litre gasoline as it means considerably more money for them. I wouldn't be looking for your local politician to do jack shit for you, folks.

Powderedmaggot 08-18-2005 03:27 PM

All I can say is I'm glad i ditched the '81 Volvo that demanded high octane fuel. My 3/4 ton diesel is less expensive to drive than the Volvo was but fuck me $.89/l is spendy for diesel. When i bought it it cost $75 to fill, now it cost $105. One tank will get me 900km so it's not as bad as a gaspot.

bigbad 08-20-2005 04:53 AM

They are also taxing the GST on the other gas taxes, so you are being double-taxed.

crxforum 08-27-2005 12:41 AM

If anyone is interested I was in Mississagua this afternoon at like 7:30pm on Mavis Rd and I filled up at 93.8. I know its still really high but it beats the hell out of the 105.9 that they want where I live. And its only a 40min drive away.

For those who haven't seen it yet, see http://www.lifeaftertheoilcrash.net/

It may or may not be biased, I'm not sure. This guy seems like he has done his research though and he cites and links to his sources like crazy.

blahblah454 08-29-2005 08:30 PM

if you want to know where cheap gas is go to google and type in your city and cheap gas after.... like "Cheap Calgary Gas" this will bring up a site for all of Canada with your current sellected cities cheapest (and most expensive gas prices).. It is a really handy site.. for those who are too lazy to do it here is the Calgary one, Im pretty sure its really easy to change to your city as well.
http://www.calgarygasprices.com/

And I would be thrilled with these high gas prices if the goverment took the extra money and pumped it into the roads! Just imagine how much money they are making off of this, they could make all the roads perfect! I would gladly spend an extra 40-80 dollars a month in order to drive on excellent roads. Too bad the government is going to waste most of this money.
