That Break

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I just thought I'd share a very sickening incident from the weekend's AFL action. The player in question is the Richmond vice-captain Nathan Brown. The guy is an absolute freak and one of the best to play the game, and a really nice bloke to boot. I remember going up to him when he played for the Western Bulldogs with a mate who supports them while having a quiet beer at The Spread Eagle in Melbourne. He obviously wanted to be left alone but was polite enough to have a 5 minute conversation with us (which I said very little) and was a real nice fella.

Anyway, in the last quarter a Demons player tried to smother the ball as Browny was kicking it and ended up snapping his Tibia and Fibula bones in half. Dunno if you's have seen a replay, but it was sickening. Thought I'd share a couple of photos just in case you guys haven't seen it yet... the first one is the actual moment it broke and the second one 10 seconds after it.

An interesting side note is that the guy never made a sound. He was getting stretchered off the ground and was just looking at his leg, shaking his head. Freak.

Oh...my...god. That is simply awful.

Man.. we were watching the game (and drinking) and all we could do was go "fuccccckkkk" and point. That looked painful... very painful. I knew as soon as I saw this thread title that it'd be about that. I'm still cringing looking at it.

It looks like a cartoon picture - something you'd see on Bugs Bunny.
Not a funny bone, but.

fuck me.
thats nasty.
poor bastard. is that a career ending injury?

Meridae'n 05-31-2005 04:28 AM

It has been in the past (Snell) but it isn't that close to the ball of his ankle so it should be right. They're saying 6 months until he can be fit enough to play, so I'm guessing they'll take their time and have him ready for preseason next year. Broken fibulas can get infected really easy, which would end his career, so they'll give it all the time it needs. A year off at 27 should do wonders for him at the end of his career anyway. No good though, he's one of the reasons you go to the footy, hope it's all well for him.

yeah I gotta say when I was watching that...it was fucking digusting.
Ah well you win some you lose some life goes on.

That's not the aussie spirit bundy!

Look at mick doohan, his leg was dying after post-op complications to the point where they had to graft the other leg to it for adequate blood supply, then had to get the nerves severed in his leg/foot just below his knee, his ankle locked in a fixed position, and the tendons severed in all his toes because they kept cramping up involuntarily.

Then he world five 500cc world grand prix championships.

I reckon they'll plate those bones back together without too many dramas. It'll probably take a while to get back up to fitness but I don't think that looks too bad. ;)

Almost horrible as the kick boxer video that's been floating around the interweb since the very beginning.

there was talk this morning on the radio about doing some nifty stem cell thingy to help it heal faster. Makes you think these stem cell guys might be onto something useful.

The same dude was pimping his company on the footy show last night.

Fuck that is a nasty pic.

Reminds me of that Premier League right angle snap a few years back.

I also remember seeing something similar on the superbowl (about 15 or 20 years ago...)
