Most of those hotels are chains, make sure that you sign up for the frequent guest program with whichever you choose, it will usually get you free upgrades, or breakfast or some added treat. Then do ask to speak to the manager when you are making your reservation, being sure to tell them that this is your wedding night.
I'm a fan of Le Meridian hotels -, they are usually beautiful rooms, and have amazing bathrooms... Hyatts --eh-- I don't get the appeal of them, in the cities I have been in, they are just overpriced compared to other hotels in the cities.

I'll put in a vote for the Royal York. It's a great place, and the staff are wonderful. Granted, I never actually stayed there (I was living in Toronto at the time, my aunt and uncle came down for a week and I went to visit) but their room, which I believe was a suite, was amazing. Also, I had been offered twice by two different staff members to carry my computer bag up to the room for me.

le meridian took over the King Edward, its actually called Le Meridien King Edward. The ultimate in swank, right downtown in the business district. Close to Yonge street & some theatres & the Eaton Centre, but not so close to the lake (like the Westin Harbour Castle is).
I would choose the Windsor Arms because it is much more intimate, and it is in the Yorkville area, with lots of nice smaller (and expensive ) restuarants. it is also close to shopping, the Museum, Uof T campus, and Bloor street . the Hyatt is very close to the Windsor Arms, across from the Museum, but it is a bigger less intimate hotel. the Royal York is a classic older hotel too, and is located across from Union Station downtown, but is also close to theatres and the King St restaurant scene. Like what was posted by hossified, their normal rooms are plain, standard, try to get nice ones with a view. My vote for romantic? the Windsor Arms |

Stayed at the Royal York for my honeymoon. Very nice hotel and great staff.
Of course that was nearly 11 years ago, but we enjoyed the stay. Very close to many things like Janey pointed out.

Does the Royal York still have that Japanese restaurant, Beni Hana or some such, on the ground floor? I spent my wedding night there in 1980 and enjoyed it very much. A few years later I spent a weekend in the Renaissance which is not in the city centre, but still a very nice place indeed.

The best hotel in Toronto is Hotel Le Germain...
http://www.germaintoronto.com/en/accueil.asp This is a small boutique hotel. Very modern. Very much like a W or something like that. I spent my 10th wedding anniversary there and it was awesome. If it isn't your sort of thing, I would say the Windsor Arms or the King Edward are good. Just about any of the high end hotels will go all out for you if you let them know you are there for your wedding night. When we arrived at Le Germain for our 10th there was a bottle of very nice wine, a hand written note from the manager, strawberries and chocolates... none of which we asked for... they were just being nice. By the way.... Congratulations on getting married!

I ended up booking at intercontinental downtown. I called all of the above places, and some were rude and non accomodating, and some were just rediculously priced.
Here is what Im getting: Lanson Champagne strawberries dipped in chcolate turn down service with truffles and rose petals breakfast in bed bath butler (guy comes to your room and professionally draws your bath with ancient oils, etc) Grand total of $299 plus tax. Windsor arms wanted 450 just for the room, and 3.50 per strawberry, 60 for champagne...nuts. Harbor castle was all booked up...Le Germain is not for me. Royal York had a nice package, but I am planning a double massage at a spa, so I'd rather save a couple hundred on the hotel and spend on that. I have spoken to many, and Intercontinental is supposedly stunning. |

I stay at the Sheraton because I get a great deal. And better yet, while on business, it's free. Four Seasons may not be as hip as the newer places but it is a class act, depending on how you define class. And not cheap.

The Sheraton has some nice rooms... the presidential suite is stunning.
danny_boy... the Intercontinental is nice. I've interviewed some people there during the Toronto Film Festival and when I was in publicity we used to have some of our stars stay there. It is unassuming from the outside but very nice on the inside. The price they gave you was outstanding. I am sure you will have a great time. You will be right on Bloor, just a little West of Yorkville. There are a ton of great restaurants in town if you are looking for some suggestions fire away. By the way, where are you getting the massages?

the Intercontinental is in the same area as the Hyatt and the Windsor Arms, so the location should be initeresting. Bloor street shopping, Yorkville restaurants, Queens Park, the museum.
it's supposed to be an excellent hotel. added bonus: it's just steps away from a Swiss Chalet! |

Hey,
Dinner wont be neccessary, as the wedding will end around midnight. Breakfast is included, and in bed!! As for the massages, we are looking for something in the North York-Thornhill area, something uptown. We want a dual massage (Massage where we lie down next to eachother) but are having a hard time finding a place to accomodate this. |

just down the street at the Hyatt, you can get a dual massage at their Stillwater Spa. Plus use of a jacuzzi and a private room with a fireplace. it is $345.

Ok..
Spoke to some more people and my fiancee'. We are getting there at 1-2 am, so we both thin the chocolates, etc will go to waste. We agreed to just spend on a room with a large tub for 2, and a place where I can provide the things I want the day before and they will set it up. After tons of research, I went with the SoHo Metropolitan hotel at Wellington and Blue Jays way. I went for the King Luxury room. It seems like a phenomenal hotel, and they were exceptionally nice over the phone. I will buy my own roses, and go beforehand and set things up. I will also bring my own champagne. In the morning, breakfast is included...this is the same price as the intercontinental, and the difference is I dont get the bath butler, the rose petals, or chocolates, all of which I can do myself. Has anyone stayed at the SoHo.. http://www.metropolitan.com/soho/ |

I haven't stayed there but I've checked it out... it is a block or two from my office.
The place looks nice. Try to see if you can get one with a view of the lake... I imagine it would be nice to look out over the Islands in the morning... Not too much in the way of massages in the neighbourhood. I was going to recomend the Stillwater at the Hyatt or the Elmwood Spa. Just a note... when I was married, we didn't get to the hotel until about 12:30 or 1 am... it had been a very full day... after a very quick bath and some sex we were out cold... exhausted. The next morning we sort of slept late and realized we only had a few hours until we had to check out. I agree with your approach on getting your own flowers and champagne, etc. Much more economical... One thing, don't do it yourself. Make one of your groomsmen or a family member set up the room for you... you will have enough to worry about besides driving to the hotel and and setting up all the flowers and stuff... you are getting married.
