big day out

well its that time again and the big day out is here for another year. so whos going? if you are going which city will you be going to? who are you most looking forward to seeing?

well im going and i will be attending the gold coast one. bands i have to see are the (jon spencer) blues explosion, the hives and the music. wish the cops and sarah blasko were also playing in sydney but you get that.

i will probably also see the likes of the donnas, regurgitator, rise against, the streets and the beastie boys. havent decided on the spazzys or grinspoon (havent seen the spazzys but love grinspoon). also the same with frenzal rhomb and diana anaid.

i am still undecided about seeing either eskimo joe or little birdie or wolfmother.

ahh decisions decisions decisions...

so what you guys think?

silent_jay 01-04-2005 07:59 AM

Now I'm a Canadian so forgive me for not knowing what the big day out is. I assume it is a concert of some sort that goes on in different cities across Australia. If this is correct what a great idea, sounds like you have some good choices of bands to see, myself I'd like to see the Music, been listening to them for a few years now, and I find it odd that they are just now starting to get noticed.

Oh well have fun at the big day out, even if I'm not sure what it is. We need something like this in Canada.

Latch 01-04-2005 01:31 PM

I'm not going, unfortunately (I'd be going to the Melbourne one).

It's a great lineup this year too..

Ella 01-04-2005 02:24 PM

No, I won't be going this year. I went to one back in the 90's, but it's a little too close to my return to work/kids return to school this year.

silentjay, you are correct - the BDO has been going for over 10 years, and the line-up is awesome each year. The musos love playing the BDO, 'cos it's super organised and the atmosphere is a blast.

Thanks for the homepage link Ella, that looks like a blast, you Aussies sure do know how to have a good time. I really do think we need something like this in Canada.

Ishmal 01-04-2005 06:51 PM

unfortuanally i can't have time off from work again SOOO soon... so i wont b there... :( looks awsome though.

Stick 01-06-2005 12:17 PM

I only ever went to gigs when I was working on them and I don't play roadie anymore, so it's a "No Day Out" for me.

alpha666 01-11-2005 01:21 AM

i'm a little over the BDO too many wankers go there, get wasted and act like fuckheads in the mosh! can't stand it! also on the main stages it really lacks the atmosphere that a club gig has! sound isn't that great, hot sun, and a ton of bands that i don't really dig and can't really see the point in paying so much for!

Stick 01-11-2005 03:39 AM

Go for the throat, Alpha! Tell it like it is! :D

Latch 01-11-2005 04:54 AM

so... what do you like about it, alpha?

slimshaydee 01-11-2005 04:06 PM

Won't be going this year but I want last year and got sunburnt like a bitch.

Ralli 01-11-2005 04:52 PM

ITS NOT FAIR. We dont get the "big day out" up here. We have an equivelant though....Bass in the Grass. It will do. Not as good as the big day out, but good enough. we get local bands and some interstate ones too.

Hey Ralli. Good to see another top ender on the boards. (i've been away for ages.) Im actually in Darwin at the moment, but for the other 3/4 of the year live in Brissy studying at uni.

For the size of the population up here I must say Bass In The Grass is pretty decent. Heard its getting moved to May or so this year.

Nowadays you can get some fairly decent airfares to Brissy to see most of the big concerts anyway (if you book in advance).

Anyway, this years BDO doesn't really appeal to me. Some of the last few ones have really lacked the OOMPH they had in the 90s

alpha666 01-15-2005 03:38 AM

i do like the smaller stages! saw mudvayne there when they were there a few years ago and bugger me if they didn't have one of the biggest sounds of any band i have heard in a long time,
i'm also a little jaded with the music scene in general. i have been working in the australian music industry since i was 14 (i am now 25) and i have come up against some of the biggist pricks that i have ever met in the industry..... too much ego too much arse licking, and chances are if i go to bdo this year i will run into some of the said arse lickers and i'm sure that it would ruin my day,
so ..... in short ..... dont mind me i'm just a little jaded right now!

Ella 01-15-2005 04:02 AM

Hehe..I know what you mean. I did over 7 years in radio, PR, band management and music writing before I escaped. The fucking scene will eat you whole if you let it. Congrats.

That's true. I used to be kind, considerate, loved flowers and cute little kittens, but now I'm just a fuckin', hollow arsehole. Grrrr.

All because of the scene....

Stick 01-15-2005 02:47 PM

Hahaha. I was smiling in that photo, too!

alpha666 01-15-2005 06:05 PM

hahahahahaha yep!
well now that i'm out of the scene i really know who my real friends are! you find that out really fast! the people who used to crawl up my arse are not interested in talking to me anymore because they can't get anything from me!
nice hey!
if anyone is going to the gold coast show however go and see "Lump" on the local stage! fucking great band! the singer used to sing for "the poor" they had a song in the charts called more wine waiter please. and they also played the final of the world battle of the bands!
one of the few bands out there that is full of people with no ego problems! so i'll give them props for that!

Skeanie? They originally came from Darwin. They were called the "Poor Boys" way back then, I did quite a few gigs for them 11 or 12 years ago. I even lent the guitar player, Julian, my SG as a back up guitar. I wonder what the rest of the boys are up to these days?

I have that single right here :)

alpha666 01-16-2005 11:42 PM

well the drummer is working at the troc here on the coast as a booking agent. he looks after world wide booking for strapping young lad. and that's all i know about! skeanie is a really cool guy! had quite a few beers with him.
the new album should be really good as they have a 2nd guitarist that has just joined and fuck me he is a great guitarist .... leaves me in the dirt! luke was in motormoth and before that in king mungi! really nice dude!

Stick 01-17-2005 12:11 AM

alpha - Julian gave me a trip one night and the next day I regained consciousness lying next to...something vaguely human.
Lucky she wasn't lying on my arm or I would have had to chew it off.
I stupidly told my mates about it and the cunts are still laughing at me after all these years!

alpha666 01-17-2005 03:12 AM

aaaah ahahahahahaha Damn thoes rock'n'roll types! nasty stuff ..... did they fill you in on what happened? because i know from past experience when thoes guys are going for a big night ........ you had better watch yourself!
