Carolyn Parrish pt.2
http://g.msn.com/0US!s6.73430_734763/2.b7371/3??cm=CTVNews
Outspoken Parrish doesn't seek approval CTV.ca News Staff Reprimanded by the prime minister for her latest anti-Bush comments, outspoken Liberal MP Carolyn Parrish says she doesn't look for anyone's approval when she speaks out. In a statement released by the Ontario MP's office on Thursday afternoon, Parrish says ideas she espouses on controversial issues are entirely her own. "I speak openly and honestly on a wide variety of topics of interest to my constituents and to many other Canadians," the statement read. "I do not seek any approvals from my leader or my party." Parrish's bold statement of independence follows closely an admonishment from the prime minister himself. Talking to reporters outside the Liberal caucus meeting on Thursday, Paul Martin said comments Parrish made about U.S. election in an interview with The Canadian Press the day before, are "clearly unacceptable." "She speaks neither for the government, nor does she speak for the caucus," he said, stopping short of revealing whether he plans to punish the backbencher. Watching the to-and-fro in Ottawa, CTV's Mike Duffy says it's clear that Parrish knows her comments are outside the bounds Martin would like his caucus to respect. But regardless, it would be difficult to fire her. "The prime minister doesn't want to do that because that would make Ms. Parrish a martyr," Duffy told Newsnet, noting Martin needs all the votes he can get to pump up his minority government. 'Dumbfounded' that Bush won The controversy stems from a CP report published on Wednesday, in which Parrish described the newly re-elected U.S. President as a "war-like man." She also said she was "dumbfounded" he had won. Americans' support for his presidency, she continued, shows they are marching to a completely different drummer than the rest of the international community. "I guess it's a reflection of the profound psychological damage of 9/11," she said. "That country is completely out of step with most of the free world." Those comments came shortly after Martin had told MPs gathered for a Liberal caucus meeting not to make inflammatory comments about the U.S. election result. This is not the first time Parrish has made such comments. In August, she called Americans "a coalition of the idiots," in reference to the U.S. missile defence plan. And last year, an open microphone caught her saying, "Damn Americans ... I hate those bastards," after a scrum outside the House of Commons. Some fellow Liberal MPs are disappointed that Parrish's views are getting so much attention. "Some obscure comments are given a lot of prominence and very often because the opposition takes great pleasure in giving them a lot more importance," Foreign Affairs Minister Pierre Pettigrew said. "I've seen Alliance members of Parliament go and knock on doors in Washington to remind them what was said. This is not helping Canada at all." Even the prime minister took the chance to take a dig at Parrish at the National Press Gallery dinner a couple of weeks ago: "As I sat and spoke with President Bush about his dream of launching a mission to Mars. And I thought to myself: Wouldn't continue great if we could get a Canadian on board? If a Canadian could be sent tens of millions of miles into the dark void of space," Martin said in his speech. "And as we all as a nation watch on television and together say aloud: `Bon voyage, Carolyn Parrish!'" Of course, Parrish is not the only Liberal MP to let her views on the U.S. spill out unfiltered. In one instance former cabinet minister Herb Dhaliwal labelled Bush a failed statesman, and in another, a spokeswoman for then-prime minister Jean Chretien was overheard calling Bush "a moron." -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Now what? Either Paul Martin has a past that somehow Parrish knows about or his ball are the size of rabbit shit for not booting her out of caucus. Maybe as prime minister though he enjoys looking like a fool by some idiot after telling his caucus to stay quiet on Bush's victory. If you were Paul Martin what would you do? Fire her? Give her raise and a prominent portfolio? Make excuses for her and remark that free speech is a pillar of democracy? Or wonder why you have balls the size of rabbit shit? What would you do?

I'm all for being outspoken, but this lady is a freaking nutcase. She ought to be silenced.
You don't bite the hand that feeds you. Our relations with the US (which we need and would die without) are strained enough. This is why women shouldn't be allowed in positions of power. (lol, that's just to get some people talking, but I"m serious about the other stuff.) |

At least she didn't call them bastards this time... Honestly, I think Parrish is speaking what is on the minds of *many* Canadians.
Many are dumfounded that he was elected and many feel that America is out of step with the rest of the world. I agree that it isn't all that diplomatic but ironically she is displaying the very characteristics that Americans find appealing in Bush -- i.e. she says it like is, she shoots from the hip, etc. There isn't much Martin can afford to do. He can reprimand her but he can't kick her out of caucus. To do so would diminish his already weakened status in the Commons. He needs her votes. As for what will the Americans think of this? Answer: Apparently not much. The rest of the world (according to the polls) generally is against Bush and yet the US still elected the guy.

She either won despite the comments or because of the comments... I come down on the side of the latter.

I didn't want to start a Carrolyn Parrish pt.3 just yet because I think the best is yet to come, prior to or when Bush makes an appearance here in Ottawa shortly.
But now it is getting just stupid. Parrish is shown stomping on a doll of Bush ( on this hour has 22 minutes) but the worse thing is when Mercer asks her to stick a sharp object (a pen) in Bush to see where it would do the worst damage. She takes the pen and sticks it in his head and says something like "There is nothing in there." Can't recall her exact words cuz I just caught the clip.,... but really, will this end? When asked what her response will be if Bush speaks to parliament, she said she hadn't made up her mind yet. And Paul Martin,..well as of today he is still being Paul Martin. Doing nothing. I know this has been rehashed but really,..shut the fuck up. Given her history of criticizing the Bush administration, this comedy skit is adding fuel to the fire. Free speech is wonderful. I couldn't care less if she would like to see Bush getting assfucked by Cheney but enough is enough. Diplomacy should rule the day, not some two bit hack like Parrish precursing a book deal because of her ignorance. edit--Rex Murphy just had a scathing review of Ms. Parrish's actions. Good for him. Another Canadian who opens his eyes every morning and the first thing he sees isn't the inside of his ass. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Thu, November 18, 2004 'He can't control me' Carolyn Parrish isn't sorry for stomping a Dubya doll, and as for the PM and fellow MPs who are seeking to curb her: 'They can all go to hell' By JOAN BRYDEN and DAN DUGAS, CP MAVERICK Liberal MP Carolyn Parrish says she won't heckle George Bush when he addresses Canada's Parliament later this month, but she has no intention of toning down her criticism of the "warlike" U.S. president. Moreover, Parrish met with Prime Minister Paul Martin late yesterday to advise him that his repeated efforts to shut her up are doomed to failure and are only fuelling controversy and making him look weak. Parrish also refused to apologize for taking part in a skit for the CBC television comedy This Hour Has 22 Minutes, in which she stomps on a Bush doll. The skit was denounced by Conservative and Liberal MPs alike. Parrish accused her colleagues and the media of overreacting to her various pronouncements on Bush. "It's 'backbencher burps, world ends'. It's ridiculous," she said in an interview. Speaking shortly before her meeting with Martin, Parrish said she intended to tell him: "Every time he gets up and reprimands me, be it ever so gentle, it just feeds it and he looks like he can't control me, which he can't. "And if he wants to know why he can't control me, I have absolutely no loyalty to this team. None. "After what they've put me through and lots of my colleagues, they can all go to hell. But he's not going to control me so all he's going to do is end up looking weak." Parrish said she's "not out to get" Martin. Indeed, she said "I don't care what happens to him," having lost respect for him earlier this year when he refused to intervene to ensure a "clean race" for the Liberal nomination in the Ontario riding of Mississauga-Erindale. That ugly nomination battle, in which Parrish defeated former Liberal MP Steve Mahoney, was rife with allegations of dirty tricks on both sides. "If he loses the next election and he has to resign, I wouldn't shed a tear over it," Parrish said of Martin. Still, she said she sought the meeting with Martin in a bid to head off undue controversy over any anti-Bush comments she may make during the president's first state visit to Canada on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1. "I'm going to assure him when I walk through the door that there is absolutely nothing to worry about. I am not going to heckle the president of the United States, not because I have any respect for him (but because) I have respect for the office and I have respect for myself. I'd look like an idiot." Nevertheless, she said she plans to take notes when Bush speaks and will give her opinion if asked by reporters. "I have opinions. They're strongly held and colourfully expressed. They always have been ... I am not going to change the way I function. If I do that then (critics) have won, they've shut me down and ... there are thousands of people who agree with me." Parrish, who was adamantly opposed to the U.S. invasion of Iraq, made headlines last year when she was overheard telling a reporter: "Damn Americans. I hate those bastards." While she regrets that outburst, she said she has no apologies to make for any of her subsequent remarks, including her reference to supporters of the U.S. ballistic missile defence scheme as the "coalition of the idiots" or her most recent jibe that Bush is "warlike." During the This Hour Has 22 Minutes skit, taped Tuesday in her office, Parrish said she simply followed the directions she was given by the 22 Minutes crew. She said she also kissed the Bush doll. "Come on guys, this is humour ... I am not a monster lady. I'm not an angry wet hen. I am actually a pretty funny person and humour is one of those tonics in life." http://www.canoe.ca/NewsStand/Ottawa...18/719205.html

Stomping on a GWB doll is the most classless thing i've seen yet, she needs to be fired. Grow some balls Martin, she won't be a martyr, she'll be an idiot who insulted our number one trading partner on multiple occasions, she needs to be dealt with.

And bah bye Ms. Parrish. Finally Paul Martin decides he doesn't like been made to look like a fool albeit over and over again.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Updated Thu. Nov. 18 2004 2:06 PM Martin dismisses Parrish from Liberal caucus CTV.ca News Staff Prime Minister Paul Martin dismissed renegade Liberal MP Carolyn Parrish from caucus today, after she made a string of controversial anti-American remarks. "I told her that even though I respect her right to express her viewpoint, I cannot, as leader of our party and of our caucus, tolerate her behaviour," Martin told reporters in a short statement outside Parliament this afternoon. "It's unacceptable." Martin said he informed Parrish of his decision a few minutes before making the announcement public on Thursday. In the latest incident to trigger an uproar, Parrish appeared on a CBC comedy show, smiling as she stomped her food onto a doll representing U.S. President George Bush. She said the whole thing was done in the spirit of fun, but few were laughing, including Conservative MPs who accused her of trying to further damage Canadian-American relations. "It seems to me and to many of the Liberal caucus members I have been talking to that the remarks she made are intolerable for any prime minister. He just can't let that go," said CTV's Craig Oliver. "This has gone beyond stomping the Bush doll. This is an issue of defiance of the prime minister's authority." "It's almost as if she's daring Martin to do something," adds The Globe and Mail's Jane Taber. But Taber notes, though, that tossing out an MP is not a simple task in a minority government situation. "She has power. There's power in a minority government for these government backbenchers, because Martin's numbers are so tight, losing one member could mean losing a vote on a piece of legislation." This isn't, of course, the first time Parrish has gotten in hot water for venting her criticism of the Bush administration. Recently, the Ontario MP made headlines when, reacting to Bush's second-term win, she said she was "dumbfounded" so many Americans had voted for the "war-like man." Conservative Monte Solberg believes that Martin would do well to purge his backbenches of naysayers, starting with Parrish. "If he wants to send the right message about how we talk about our biggest trading partner and other countries in general, he should get rid of her," Solberg said Wednesday. Conservative Leader Stephen Harper, also was dumbfounded by the remarks. "Why, if the prime minister is serious about having good relations with the U.S., does he allow this to go on in his caucus?" Harper asked reporters. http://g.msn.com/0US!s6.73430_734763/2.e7371/1??cm=CTVNews Wonder how soon Harper Collins will come a running to offer a book deal. 15 minutes almost up.

Funny, I found her outspokenness a fresh change from the usual Liberal toting of the party line (down on your knees bitches, PM has spoken).. god forbid we have politicians with the cajones (or ovum I suppose) to voice their opinions. I hope she ups the ante and burns an American flag when Bush stops by..
Yes, some of us really are that angry with America for their ignorance and arrogance, especially out west. GWAR said it best: America MUST Be Destroyed! |
