" Do the crime, be prepared to do the time "
An old but very true saying, are people seriously saying that these people deserve special consideration? As in the majority of cases these people have entered the country illegally putting not only themselves & their children at risk but also the enforcment agency personnell. Australia has very strict guidelines regarding refugee status etc. & why should those guidelines be compromised by a few people seeking to "rort" the system . Reseach shows that these people have left the sanctuary of "safe" countries enroute to their ultimate destination of Australia. I agree that it's very sad to see children held in custody by the authorities but what options are available to them, perhaps immediate deportation? These people, almost without exception have left a "safe" place to get here, let them be like everyone else & apply for entry before arriving here. |

If the country of origin is so "safe"
Why would you be convinced that the only option available was to sell all you have, give it to someone on the blackmarket, hope and i do mean a big hope, that your not a) led astray b) abandoned c) killed ... while your new monetary enabled friends "keep there word" Is Australia safe Whiteox? If so, why are you here still? By your reckoning we should all be moving to genocide/war zones. I agree that many are most likely rorting the system As Kostya states above, the guts of the thread has fleshed out blame/criminal activity/punishment .. where now really asking "Why detain them?" Most commonly the statements are like yours .. non-valid status for immigration, this has been combined with extended inactivity on the governments part adjoining the the comment of "their host country doesn't want to pay to have them back" .. This has been refuted easily when you consider the costs of detainment for as little as 6 months compared with a plane fare home. The only real obvious point to me is that their continued sufferring and media attention is most likley an excellent detterent to others wishing and even better, those making financial gain, from the same course of action. If thats the case the government should accompany the navy with media and blow the next 2-3 boats/floatable objects up making sure 1) all where killed 2) the media showed the footage internationally This is simply the above ideal taken to the extreme but what would the people in the detention camps given a choice of the two pick? especially after now approaching 2-3 years for many of them.
