Jury duty

I have found myself on the jury role this year, and managed to get out of the 12 week trial earlier this year (wife was pregnant). Anyway, I'm up again this Monday.

Has anybody done it? What did you think of the whole process?

Ella 09-03-2004 11:53 PM

I have never been selected. Dunno why...I reckon my drink driving misdemenours would have dropped off by now *shrug*

A couple of people I work with were up for selection recently...they file past the lawyers and are looked at and either accepted or rejected. Just by their appearance. Weird process.

in year 12 legal studies i learnt all about the jury selection process, i know exactly how to get out of it. I'm not sharing my secret though, otherwise there'd be no jurors for anyone. BTW they are alot more tough than they used to be, you have to have the best excuse to ge outta it these days.

So there's a whole generation of Australians who know how to get out of jury duty 'cos they learnt it at school?

just the ones who paid attention in legal studies :)

spindles 09-04-2004 07:42 PM

knew I should've taken legal studies :)

Maybe if I wear this child vomit encrusted shirt, they might skip over me :D

Why not just rockup w/ a shirt saying "FUCK THE [somebodies]". They can't keep you if you have such a clear prejudice, I imagine hehe.

I'm in a sweet position. Not a citizen yet.. so no jury duty.. and don't pay taxes back in the States (which is how I think they track you), so no worries there.

frozenstellar 09-05-2004 02:42 AM

not shower for a few days, then rock up.

no-one will want to know you, and thus no jury duty?

That would probably work. Now where does one acquire such a shirt on a Sunday evening

Latch 09-05-2004 03:11 AM

Target and a texta ;)

Ella 09-09-2004 03:14 AM

So didja get nabbed for duty, spindles?

spindles 09-10-2004 06:41 PM

I ended up getting excused. I work from home and said that I was responsible for looking after my 10 week old. Not exactly 100% true, but 4 weeks woulda be rather long.

So, I'm still on the role until February, and will get called up again (hopefully for something shorter).

In the meantime, I can organise the shirt Latch suggested :)

i am now in melb but am still enrolled at my parents place which is in the country and too far from a court house - that stops u from getting called

A workmate went on the piss for a weekend and rolled up smelly and dirty on Monday. No jury duty for him.

Hah, love that. I've been called up 4 times and twice at the same time as my mother - random my arse!

xerraire1 12-05-2004 08:43 PM

ahahaha or if you get stuck with it, while the defendant is testifying, throw holy water at them, and purchase a large cross

spindles 01-05-2005 12:00 AM

Well, I got my latest summons. I'm guessing that I'll already be in court, so I won't have to attend. A novel way to get out of jury duty - get someone to sue you :)

MiSo 01-06-2005 04:51 AM

i have a friend who says he always gets out of them because his dad is a dr. and he just gets his dad to write him a note.

-----------------------------

i've had to report to jury duty before but i have never been selected.
i tried to keep my mouth shut as much as possible. when i was asked a question i made my answer as short as possible. the lawyers are trying to get information out of you; by giving long answers you're giving the lawyers more of a reason to pick you. if you're blabbering alot they will remember you and choose you. but if you're a quiet one in the back, you might get skipped over.
not sure if its true, but this is my 2 cents
