Brotherhood

Im from Australia and we have heaps of canadians travelling down here. Upon my experience with canadians I have always felt a sense of brotherhood between our countries. The only other country that rivals that sense of community with us is New Zealand but considering we are both pretty much alone down here we dont have much choice. Also NZ and OZ are more competitive with each other than anyone else in the world. Anyway Back on topic. Ive always felt a union with canadians. From my general discussion about it with people it does seem like a pretty universal feeling down here. Do canadians have the same mentallity towards Austrailans? If not what sort of feeling would you say most canadians have towards autralians and why?

Ive tried to put my finger on why This brotherhood feeling seems to be evident. When I was younger I figured it was because we were both commenwealth countries which have achieved a large degree of independance. From memory you guys aren't in the C'wealth anymore but are still allowed in the C'wealth games? We do both harbour ill will towards the americans. But then again so does everyone else. I suspect it is because we have very similar cultures and national mentallities. Any thoughts from you side?

I met up with some Kiwi's and Aussies in Canada recently and talked about this very thing. I've always gotten along well with people down under wherever I go, especially Kiwi's (especially those cute NZ girls).

My theory is that we're sort of the same "class" of country with liberal viewpoints and a British background. The list goes on... including the love/hate relationship with the USA. Each of has a shot of their culture each day if you watch TV for example.

I really can't believe I haven't travelled down there yet.

I just find the people to be so nice down there. I really don't know myself why I get along so well with Aussies, but its just there, and I don't knock it. :)

Australia is like the long lost twin that moved somewhere hot. Once in awhile you get together and its like you were never apart.

I dunno, truth be told, but you're right. There's an odd affinity between the two countries.

Oooh I know what it is! You both secretly want to be more like the States ;)

I've always noticed the same thing. I have a good friend that I met while he was traveling here in Canada. He ended up moving here and living in here in Calgary and over the years I've gotten to know all of his family back in Australia. We've talked a lot about this and I think it comes down to culture and background. We both have a similar easy going attitude.

In my travels through Australia I found the same thing, as a Canadian I felt right at home and welcome in your country. I love it down there.

I'll be heading back there very shortly actually. I've got a business trip planned to Sydney, Cowra and Orange for the end of October before I head over to New Zealand. Can't wait, too bad it's only for 2 weeks.

I have never been to Australia but for years and years I worked out in Banff at Sunshine Village (and a bunch of other places). There were always tons of Aussies and Kiwis working there so I got to know a bunch of you guys.

I think most of our similarities stem from our similar geographies.

Miles and miles of open spaces, yours just happens to be sandy and ours is snowy.

Never been to Australia, or New Zealand, but from the people I have me tin Canada and the states from these 2 countries they are great, I mean a few beers, some strippers and it's all good. Very nice genuine people.

I dated an Aussie chick.

Ya, I like Aussie's a lot. Well, at least the dozen or so I've met up here. There's many similarities.

Aussie rules! They're next to sexiest country...with sexiest country being Canada that is ;)

But seriously, I can't really see the differences between Australia and Canada. They're so similar in cultural and language. I can see the obvious differences between Austrilia/Canada and Great Britain.

Always liked dealing with Aussies, but haven't had the chance to visit yet.

Antikarma hit it on the head... It's like they're long lost relatives just now reunited.

Never been to Australia or New Zealand but they are at the top of my list to visit in the future. I don't know why I just really want to go there. I like the people and the scenery for sure. I like girls with an Aussie accent too, think it's quite neat.

I agree that there is some sort of odd connection between the two countries. It's definitely mutual. My friend kept telling me about aussie babes....

mokle 10-15-2004 10:34 PM

Every Aussie I've met has been ery friendly and we've always seemed to click. (The same goes for Kiwi's, I've met very good people on vacation in BC).

Most of my friends agree too, we all believe that Aussies are good people and that our countries and cultures don't seem too different. Heck, even our money is nearly on par ;)
