Should Canada separate from Quebec?

Never. The idea of a seperate country known as Quebec is a pipe dream..

Canada is not Canada without Quebec, and Quebec wouldnt be the same without us

If they want to leave, leave... I feel sorry for the maritimes tho. They would feel like Alaska. We dont want to do that to them...

Shouldn't it be "Should Quebect separate from Canada?" It seems with that question, Canada is smaller than Quebec...

But, if the frenchies want to fuck with the rest of Canada, then by all means, go wild. I don't give a shit anymore since this issue is so 70's...

The issue is barely worth discussing anymore.

What does 'seperating' even mean?


*would Quebec take a share of the debt?
*would Quebec create a new currency?
*what would happen to CDN military bases in PQ, would they have to buy them?
*what about passports?

When Jaques Parizeau called the last "Oui/Non" vote in 1995 (96?), none of this was ever clear to either side of the debate.

If they want to separate, go for it, it will make the drive across Canada that much faster.

God I am so sick of the seperation crap. It has been going on far too long. I am almost to thepoint where I am like, whatever if you wanna go fine. Good luck on your own without Canada to carry your debt. I personally dont have a clue why any body would want to suddenly not be a pert of a country like Canada. They really dont realize how lucky they are.

Quebec and the people who live there have been some of the greatest people that I've met.
If any place should seperate from Canada it should be Saskatchewan.
They could charge a toll for driving through it and that would be the industry there.

My Canada includes the provinces that want to be here.
Hold as many referendums as you'd like, provided the money to do so comes out of Quebec's pocket. Should Quebec ever decide to separate, I'll wish 'em good luck and hope that the Canadian government cuts off every cent of funding, 'cause I'll be damned if any of my taxes go to someone who doesn't want to be a part of my country.

As has been said, let them separate, but ONLY if we cut our funding to them. Make it all or none. The fact that they would want to be separate but still need our money is bullshit. They already force us to learn French.

Wow. From the subject line I thought this would be a very interesting conversation, since the question posed is a twist from the original. More than half the replies are geared towards the question "Should QUEBEC separate from Canada", while the ACTUAL question was "Should CANADA separate from Quebec." This is not about Quebecers, it's about the rest of this country. Do non-Quebecers want Quebec as a part of their country? AS for the question making Canada look smaller, let's all leave our insecurities at the door, shall we.

I hear a lot of Quebec bashing from other Canadians, even on the TFP, but if the province sucks so much money out of the others, if you are sick of having to learn French in high school, if you are sick of having the Bloc around, then why wouldn't you say "screw'em" and leave. This is what I perceive as the true purpose of the thread title: to turn the tables and see whether the rest of Canada would feel better off without Quebec and vote to separate itself from it.

Personally, I was never a separatist. I love my country as a whole and consider it one of the best places to live.

Of course we want Quebec as part of our country, it's OUR country and OUR Province. Why cut off a piece of your own body, doesn't make sense.

The last referendum was in 95, and Non only won by a percent. Most of the seperatist movements have been far more recent then the 70's, and the Quebeckers that feel the strongest about the issue tend to be in their 20's-30's. But anyways, it's still a pipe dream. Quebec couldn't survive as a country on it's own, and Canada just wouldn't be the same without them. Come on, we're Canadians! We gotta stick together

In my opinion, I think it would destroy Canada. It would alienate the maritimes, then they could well want to seperate, and Then there's western alienation, and we'd be in such a mess that the US would just annex us. An extreme situation, yes. I still think they should stay.

I wonder if the day will ever come when Canada represents a contingency of countries much like Europe currently does, that being each province is actually an independant country.

That would be interesting especially regarding who would sink or swim or if the US would think of expanding. There would clearly be winners and losers.

And it is not so far fetched. In recent years, aside from Quebec, Newfoundland, Manitoba, Alberta and even Ontario have posed the "What if ?" question to some degree or another. Maybe 20 or 30 more years of federal government micro-management will be enough of a carrot to dangle.

That's a very interesting idea, OFKU0. I never thought about a coalition of small countries like that. Would it work, though? Well, if Europeans can pull it off (and their many cultural differences put our to shame), then perhaps it would be possible.

Of course, we are made of natural resources and located conveniently next to the US... wonder who would be the first to get annexed, if any.

Well if annexation were of interest to the U.S, which I can't think why it wouldn't be, I would say B.C (direct link to Alaska) and the maritime provinces to shore up the border protecting all of N. America.

If Ontario, Alberta and Quebec were left as trading partners, then the remaining countries (Manitoba and Saskatchewan) could deal with Alberta and Ontario centrally. Broad based U.S investment into Quebec, Ontario and Alberta could guarantee Man. and Sask. would not be left behind. Or cattle and wheat could sustain them as traders to other countries in Canada. Very interesting

EDIT; Someone correct me if I'm wrong but isn't there very stringent cross border trading guidelines between provinces.
