With the NDP, they don't intend to cut taxes as you suggest. They have said they would rollback some corporate tax cuts but leave individual taxes alone. They have said they will increase spending. They plan on doing this by using the surplus to fix our "social safety net" rather than using the surplus to pay down the debt.

This is in the Ottawa Citizen today. I looked under taxes and according to this source the NDP are cutting taxes 35.6 billion over 5 years as well 45 billion in tax hikes.

- $35.6 billion in tax cuts over five years, including an increase to the Child Tax Benefit, removing the GST from family essentials, eliminating income tax for those earning less than $15,000

- $45 billion in tax hikes, including full taxation of capital gains, a new 32.5-per-cent tax rate for incomes over $250,000, raising corporate taxes, an "excess profits tax" on banks and an inheritance tax on all income over $1 million

That's 9.4 billion up... It isn't a tax cut per se... it's more of redistribution of the tax burden to those who can afford to pay it...

You know, it sounds like some of you don't realize that not voting for a party because they're unlikely to win is not an unreasonable idea and it's called strategic voting (sometimes, tactical voting). Now, you may want to vote your conscience and vote for whomever you support the most and that's your perogative but it will increase the chances that your vote will become ineffective.

You see, in Canada, we use the First Past the Post electoral system. Strangely, it is truly a system that throws away information!
It's an all-or-nothing system where your vote and, thus, your opinion isn't remembered unless you win so there's great incentive for you to win! So much so that, yeah, perhaps you'll vote for the second best guy because he has a chance of winning and your vote might make a difference, instead of voting for someone unpopular and having your vote nullified and effecting no change...

If we were using a more proportional system then we'd have more of an incentive to vote our conscience and forget about strategy. Something I would very much like to do...

First of all, communism doesn't imply that you lack democracy. One's an economical definition while the other's a political one. So, it's perfectly possible to have a communist democracy, just like it's possible to have a capitalist dictatorship.

Secondly, in answer to your question, no. Not only were the NDP never the communist party but the latter still exist!

Phewf, i did it... my first offical vote! Woot! I voted NDP (same as in this little poll). My logic was purely process of elimination. I'm just not a conservative type thinker... at all. I wasn't pleased with the liberal's bang up job and they really hold nothing promising for myself in my own situation. Power to the Green party, but that's not 100% where my priorities lay. Thus rendering me the NDP. They're fighting a losing battle, but at least they're fighting...

Libs - barely. We'll probably go back to the polls in 18-24 months. Until then, the NDP will prop up the libs. I see the Conservatives and Liberals working together more than the Libs and Bloc.
