Best Beer
I'm owning this area so far hehe.. two new threads outta the three here right now.
Anyways, I figure.. what better way to start off the "Australia" area then discussing (Australian) beer (i.e. Not Fosters ). I was going to insult VB in another thread, but I thought it'd threadjack the thread.. so... VB = Vaginal Backwash.. and it's pretty true. Can't really stand the stuff (unless I've been drinking already). I'm a huge fan of Carlton Draught for normal drinking, Crownies if I'm feeling like popping an extra $10 on the slab. Tooheys New is worse than VB.. I won't even get started on that. So.. what do you like? What do you hate? What's your favourite? Why? |

Mate im a victorian so I wouldnt go knocking the VBs right about now. Crownies are me favs (never have enough $$ for them though), followed by VBs, followed by empires (again only when i got the cash).

1. Free beer
2. Someone elses beer 3. Stolen beer however, if i am purchasing beer for once, its likely i'll be found cleansing my liver with pretty much either Carlton draught (at the pub) - find me a better, readily available, student budget friendly beer on tap, and i'm yours. either that, or Tooheys extra dry (backyard/bbq).... as you'll read below, i'm not a tooheys fan at all, but this shit kicks ass. it got me through VCE, and despite numerous pavement pizzas due to it, i still love the stuff. Vomit bombs (VB), after chewing down the first few, its easier to get stuck into them, espicially if said beer originates from any of the above 3 sources. still, its an effort to chew those first few down, and requires financial or liquid incentive not to jump ship back to draught. Tooheys New - best thing Tooheys ever did was fuck off with this shit from victorian pubs. how anyone can 'enjoy' tooheys new is beyond me, and i'm sure its an arrestable offense to enjoy this liquified shit. . free vomit bombs atleast have a certain sweetness to them, new just leaves a trail of horrible the whole way down. consumption of this definately requires it to originate from source #1 above, as if its someone elses beer - its someone you DONT need to know, and who steals shit beer? i'm not sure which i'd rather drink... tooheys new or fosters special.. and thats light beer. |

Crownies for sure
But I know you said no Fosters. Fosters beats Carlton Draught and VB for sure. And I mean Aussies Fosters, not Fosters in the Uk (which is different and great). Anyway my 2 cents worth. Just about to watch Brisbane against Port Adelaide. Great site Cheers |

Carlton United Breweries have brainwashed us to think that Crownies are a boutique beer... in reality it's crap. For the same money you can get Cascade which is an infinitely better drop.
All you blokes that bag Fosters should actually have one. I was giving a mate of mine shit about drinking Fosters last year and he gave me one and told me to actually try it... and it isn't too bad. It used to be absolute horse piss, but they changed it. We call VB "house-o's" here, because it's mostly drank by all the housing commission folk. Nothing surer than driving through Ashmont and seeing some wino walking along with a king-brown of VB. I drink Melbourne usually, but Carlton Draught is a pretty decent drop. Don't mind the odd Coopers either. Anything's better than Tooheys Red (brewed in NZ too btw)

Speaking of Aussie beer, I had a nasty run-in with VB last night D:~ Some beers I like: Guinness Newcastle Brown Monteihs range (good NZ beer) Stella Theres no beer that I absolutely hate really, although Stag ($NZ 10 a dozen) is a bit hard to drink down, but a good option when you're broke none the less.

My old man went over there last year, reckons you can get a certain type of beer at the supermarket for next to fuck-all. He said it's rough, but you can take an empty 2L bottle in there and fill it up for $3 or so... this was in Christchurch too.

Cooper's Sparkling and Pale Ales are certainly my all-time favorites I'm having one right now, two more in the fridge for whenever I want
Cooper's on tap isn't all that common though, but frozenstellar's right about Carlton draught being a good beer for a good price. It's everywhere, regular price, can't go wrong with it. I'll avoid VB as much as I can but if the choice is between VB and water, then it's VB for sure. I also love Carlsberg but that's not Aussie. |

but, worst of all... without a shadow of a doubt... is that Carlton Cold Shot. horse-piss... its that shitty beer that comes in a plastic bottle with a shot of 'vodka' in it. nasty nasty nasty. edit... wait, we were talking about BEST beer weren't we... well, i'm a regular Carlton Draught drinker... its a solid, tasty beverage that comes at genuine 1972 prices in some of the establishments i frequent (which is odd since its. splashing out i've always been a fan of Hahn Premium on a hot summer arvo. but if its a classy night out, then its Crown all the way (i don't care if its just VB repackaged in a special way... its all class!)

My favourite beers:
On tap: Carlton draught or Tooheys old (Hey I'm from Newcastle, it's tradition to drink old!) I like drinking extra dry at venues where glass is not allowed, how cool are the plastic extra dry bottles they made for the big days out? Melbourne Bitter is okay occasionally. VB is okay if you like getting seriously hung over (what the hell is in that crap?) All my band mates drink new, theres something wrong with them. And I once spent a period in QLD where the only free beer available was XXXX gold. It was XXXX. |

Oh yeah - I have no cred since I live in the states and don't know what I am talking about. Carry on. . .

Crown.
Somebody tried to feed me VB once, but I figured seeing as they were begging me to drink it, it was probably pretty foul.

If I'm on a budget, it's hard to go past Swan draught...bloody nice for a cheap beer. But I really like good beers, and I'm usually willing to pay for them. It goes without saying that a Cooper's stout is the best beer made in Godzone, followed closely by the rest of the Coopers range. But lately, I've been getting in to Squires a bit, and I'd recommend a Redback to anyone who can drink a wheat beer.
I've got no idea why anyone would drink VB...there's so much out there that's better!

I just came back (live in the U.S.) from a 10 day trip in Australia.
Beers I dislike: Carlton Draught and VB Bought a case of Carlton my first day there, thoroughly disliked it from the get-go. (Buddy bought a case of VB same day, and same story ) Beers I really liked: Crown Lager was excellent. I went up the Cairns too, and XXXX (Four-X) was good. A bar had pitchers for $6, and after about 7 or 8 of them on separate occasions, it still was great. Good Beers: Hahn Premimum, Tooheys, Cascade |

I agree. When in Sydney I loved Toohey's New schooners. I also really like Hahn Premium and Cascade (lived in Tassie for three years - it's dead cheap when you live there).

Harsh revue, but entirely justifiable.

Speaking of beer, I've been at the pub tonight as a mate is leaving and indulged in quite a lot of beer....started with Corona (not Aussie, I know. but still yummy) and then numerous pots of Tooiheys New. I think that wwas before the g7&ts and archers spris. Do you think I'll have a hangover?

Yeah, bugger about that. And guess what? I had a shit of a hangover and hardly left the house all weekend.
So now I'm off the grog for a couple of weeks. Or until I go loopy. Whichever comes first.
