The 30 Second Mystery 38 - What?
There are four categories: Who, What, Where and Why. Some will be easy, some not. I have as many as six clues to help you along, which I'll supply as needed.
Please limit yourself to one guess, and another guess for each clue I supply. No questions asking for help or hints are allowed. Partially correct answers won't be acknowledged. Wild guesses and comments are fine. In fact, they can add to the mystery and are fun to read. The Case: A man bets on a horse. The horse does not win, but the man wins the bet. The man proves he won the bet with a process that leads to a new invention. The Mystery: What century did the bet take place and what did the invention lead to? |
1800's the invention photography(camera)

he could be literally on the horse when he makes the bet, but he bets for the horse to lose...
That doesn't really solve the mystery that well though, and doesn't deal with an invention... |
19th century, high-speed photography, leading to motion pictures
edit: forgot to finish my answer, hope this doesn't disqualify me |
Interesting facts: The bet was that a horse raises all four legs at some point while galloping. The man was Leland Stanford, future founder of Stanford University.
