The 30 Second Mystery 36 - What?

There are four categories: Who, What, Where and Why. Some will be easy, some not. I have as many as six clues to help you along, which I'll supply as needed.

Please limit yourself to one guess, and another guess for each clue I supply. No questions asking for help or hints are allowed. Partially correct answers won't be acknowledged.

Wild guesses and comments are fine. In fact, they can add to the mystery and are fun to read.

The Case:
It's a holiday. Jack jumps into his car and begins the long drive. He drives for hours in one direction and covers hundreds of miles. When Jack stops the car and gets out, he's in the same place that he started.

The Mystery:
What is the state and what is the month?

The first correct answer was ubertuber for 5 points.

RageAngel9 did a nice job explaining it.

Stay tuned...

There's 2 answers to that.
1. Infinate as if it's a perfect circle your always going in the different direction for "some" period of time. or.....

2. 1 - forward.

just saying that the riddle would be more accurate if it said "He drives for hours without ever turning off the road and covers hundreds of miles." saying that he goes the same direction usually implies something like going north, south, east, west.

I didn't imply. You inferred. That's part of what makes riddles fun.

i hate to belabor such a minor point, but by your logic, if I go anywhere in my car without putting it into reverse, I've gone only one direction--forward.

Yes, that's one way to define "one direction". Another definition might be clockwise. Another might be east. Still another might be up.

All are perfectly within the rules of riddles. Words can be, and often are, used in ways that are misleading. It's part of the game.

Your argument seems to be that I used a phrase in a way that caused you to mistake my intent; I accept that. The only way I could be wrong is to prove that I used the words "one direction" in a way that is completely unacceptable in the English language. You can not. Clock hands move in one direction. Time moves in one direction. If you pay attention to the linguistic use of the phrase, not the concepts behind them, you'll see my point.
