The 30 Second Mystery 24 - What?
 

There are four categories: Who, What, Where and Why. Some will be easy, some not. I have as many as six clues to help you along, which I'll supply as needed.

Please limit yourself to one guess, and another guess for each clue I supply. No questions asking for help or hints are allowed. Partially correct answers won't be acknowledged.

Wild guesses and comments are fine. In fact, they can add to the mystery and are fun to read.

The Case:
A fleet of naval vessels is heading due north into frigid Arctic waters when it comes under heavy attack. One member of the flotilla sinks to the bottom. The captain and crew went down with the ship.

The Mystery:
Why didn't anyone stop to look for survivors?

They were in a submarine.

and of course, subs can "unsink" to the surface too!

the ship ran into some ice, which caused it to sink, but 'the bottom' was shallow. so when everyone went down with the ship, nobody died.

uh....yeah

Guess: If the icebreaker is the ship that sank, the rest of the flotilla would be nuts to stick around looking, lest they get icebound.
