The " it's got to have a name " Game .

It all started with a conversation with a co-worker this morning .

Co-worker : You know that thing-a-ma-bob that changes the bathtub water from faucet to shower head ?

Me : Ummm , yea .

Co-worker : Well , mine broke last night and I have to replace it .

Me : Ummm , OK .

Co-worker : So what is it called ?

Me : Don't know ... sorry .

Shortly after we found out that the proper name was a 'shower diverter valve ' ... Duh .

Later at lunch a number of questions came up about other things that must have a proper name to them .

1) The metal thing on a pencil that is between the eraser and the wood .
2) The fastener that holds the price tags on your clothes .
3) The little divit on your face between your upper lip and your nose .

All of these things must have a ' proper term ' for them .
Do you know what they are ?
Do you have more to add to the list ?

Question #1 = a ferrule

The picture at above illustrates the steps involved in the manufacture of a wood pencil.

It starts with a block of cedar (1) which is then cut into slats (2).

The slats are then stained (3) and grooves are cut into one surface (4).

Prepared leads are placed into the grooves (5) and a second slat is placed on top and bonded with the first (6).

This 'pencil sandwich' is then passed through a milling process (7) to separate the individual pencils (8).

The pencil is painted and finished (9 & 10), a ferrule crimped onto the end (11), and finally, an eraser is crimped into the ferrule (12).

GOD DAMN I HATE THOSE TAG TAIL FASTENERS !
HOW DO YOU GET THEM OFF WITHOUT CUTTING THEM ?
EVEN THEN ... YOU LOSE THE TAIL SOMETIMES !

Much better now that I know the proper name for the SONOFABITCH !

I also think a ferrule sounds to generic .

Question #3 = Levator labii superioris - this elevates and everts the upper lip and aids the zygomaticus minor muscle in the expression of sadness.

I need a drink!

there's a dictionary that has common items and has all the items on it with their names... forgot the name of the thing, I think it's called the Visual Dictionary.

What are the plastic pieces at the ends of shoelaces? Wasn't that from an episode of Seinfeld?

How about the little ring left on a 2 litre or 20 oz. bottle after you unscrew the cap?

Fe-Rule is the sister to rap artist Ja-Rule. She can't sing though.

Ferrule is also used as the plastic tip on the tip of a pool cue......

Actually it was mentioned on Saturday Night Live that was hosted by Jerry Seinfeld.

He was playing a Game Show host for a game show called "Stand Up and Win" and the winner of the show won those things (Aglets).

Ohh yeah...

...and in responce to the tamper evident band:

Ahhh, that makes sense. Now I must go amaze my friends with all the pointless knowledge I've gained from this thread. Meanwhile trying to come up with new things that I never knew the names of.

I like this thread.
