THERE have been plenty of odd culinary pairings in recent times, but ice cream and beer?
Believe it. The dessert was created by the Doddington Dairy in Northumberland and is available only in England on a limited release.
But a favourable reaction from the public, which is now considered almost certain, would mean the ice cream could soon be headed for the export market, with Australia a guaranteed buyer.
Doddington teamed with Edinburgh-based Scottish Courage brewery to produce Newcastle Brown Ice Cream, a caramel-flavoured sweet with a subtle hint of Newcastle Brown Ale.
The BBC reports that the alcohol all but disappears during the processing, leaving the ice cream with a 1 per cent alcohol content, allowing the diner to enjoy a generous serving and still not fear the breathalyser.
Newcastle Brown Ale already has been used as an ingredient in locally produced products, such as bread.
"We were looking for an ice cream flavour that was distinctive, and had a strong identity with the region," says Doddington Dairy director Jackie Maxwell.
"It has been a fantastic challenge working on a product like this, with one of the world's most famous brands.
"Every part of the process has been great for us, from the design of the cartons through to testing the ale syrup for just the right flavour."
Maxwell said it had gone down very well with the Capital of Culture judges.
The judges, looking for products to promote festivities in England, which is the 2008 European Capital of Culture, are reported to have found the ice cream to their liking, Maxwell says.
"We got some feedback from organisers and they said they had tasted it and enjoyed it," she says.

I'd try it, of course. But I can't help wondering why Ben & Jerry's, the kings of ice cream flavor experimentation, haven't done it.
