Do you look like yourself? (NSFW)

I just read the title by Cynthetiq Do you like to look at yourself in the mirror as Do you look like yourself in the mirror.

Do you look like yourself in the mirror? Do you look the same to yourself each day? What about in pics? Do you look like you think you look?

One day this past summer I passed a mirror and said, "I look like a turtle." I had no idea.

Plan9 12-03-2009 11:33 AM

That's funny. A lot of people say I look like a turtle as well.

Don't know why but the question reminded me of:

Yesterday upon the stair
I met a man who wasn’t there
He wasn’t there again today
Oh, how I wish he’d go away

When I came home last night at three
The man was waiting there for me
But when I looked around the hall
I couldn’t see him there at all!
Go away, go away, don’t you come back any more!
Go away, go away, and please don’t slam the door

Last night I saw upon the stair
A little man who wasn’t there
He wasn’t there again today
Oh, how I wish he’d go away

I always look different than I expected, but everyone else recognizes me...

When I was much younger, like still adolescent, I often had thoughts about not looking like how I felt I looked. In hindsight, I think that was mostly some insecurity and not comfortable yet with who I was. I was also somewhat overweight back then, right up until the year I got out of college, and my self-confidence was compromised by my feelings about being overweight. Then when I lost that weight I got all pumped up and positively psyched about my "new look" and I rode that positive wave for many years.

Now adays, I'm mostly happy with who I am and I usually look at myself and think I look like me/like how I feel. An occasional exception...I would like to loose a few pounds again and sometimes I notice that more than at other times. I recently decided to join the local health club which I'll do this week and I plan to get in better shape than I've been in many many years.

I guess now this is in nonsense the sky's the limit.

But I actually thought the thread title would be interesting to discuss. As soon as I read it I thought 'great question'. I know what I look like and I equate that with how I feel I look. But I totally have moments where I don't feel I look the way I do. Sometimes I feel I look far more interesting than I do, and others I feel I look far worse than I do. How do I know the difference? I don't know, people tell me, or I look at photos of the moment and think I look quite different than what I felt at the time.

back to the shenanigans...

On a highly related note, this was sort of fun: about a week ago the people I work with started a "wall of shame" wherein they found photos of celebrities who look like all the employees and those were posted on a bulletin board with the employees name on the respective pic. After a couple of revisions due to some people not being happy with who they were said to look like, most employees are now happy with their celebrity alter egos.

So I'm happy to report that I now work with Halle Berry, Tommy Chong, Victoria Principal, and many other beautiful people.

I was determined to look most like John Larroquette, or depending on my mood, hair, and look of the day, like Pres. Bill Clinton. Over the years quite a few times I had people obviously looking at me in restaurants and other public places and commenting to themselves and when they notice me noticing many times they've come up to me and said "OMG, you look just like..." and it's always been Bill Clinton or John Larroquette.

I get Kirstie Alley a lot lol. Well damn, this could be a new thread - what celebrity do you look like, or something.

Anyways, no. I don't look like I think I do. I'm reminded of this with candid photos. If I'm not aware that a photo's being taken of me, I end up looking horrible. Otherwise, I'm pretty photogenic lol.

purplirpa once told me I look like Clint Eastwood...

I'm sure she was kidding.
________

I'm never surprised by what I look like. I have a firm grasp on my appearance and am quite pleased with it.

My voice is a different story. Every time I hear my voice in a recording I'm like, "That's what I sound like?!"

Not that I take any issue with my voice; I just sound very different to myself...

noodle 12-03-2009 08:09 PM

I don't think I look like I think I should.
And i get Jodie Foster a lot.
Hmmmphf.

bazkitcase5 12-03-2009 11:38 PM

good question

when I look in the mirror, I usually feel like my reflection is pretty accurate to the person that I associate myself as being

but it is rare that I actually like a close up photo of myself - in fact I usually hate taking pictures, because its almost like I don't feel I am as accurately represented

kinda funny really, cause you would think they would be close to the same thing...

BadNick 12-04-2009 06:37 AM

if you find a good photographer who is willing to work with "you" ...it's simply amazing to me how some of them can capture the best impressions of a person. I have done it accidentally. If I take a hundred shots one might be a stand out.

girldetective 12-11-2009 10:44 AM

Sometimes I look in the mirror and think I should look older, other times younger.
Sometimes I think, "Wait, I look nothing like Sonia Braga in the Milagro Bean Field War!"
Darn it!

uncle phil 12-11-2009 01:06 PM

what a great book, gd...

Charlatan 12-11-2009 03:34 PM

The only time I've not looked like myself was when my face was swollen so much I looked like an alien.

CinnamonGirl 12-11-2009 09:58 PM

Not at all. I'm really a tall, slim redhead, but sadly, the mirror does not show that.

Hmph.

Jove 12-12-2009 06:16 AM

Sometimes!

Ourcrazymodern? 12-12-2009 02:37 PM

More's the pity.

When I was ever so much less than twenty, a friend opined;
"She has her own face."

I didn't understand that, then

I love that. (:

I tend to look a lot stupider in the mirror than I thought I looked before I looked (right...) and there was one memorable occasion when I mistook myself for someone else as I passed a darkened room, but I think generally my mood informs the details I notice when I see my own face. Sometimes I remind people of Molly Ringwald, but I think that's just my hair talking.

BadNick 12-15-2009 06:29 AM

I'm having a good hair day today so when I looked in the mirror a few minutes ago, I looked just like me!

SSJTWIZTA 12-19-2009 11:55 PM

I've spent some face time with some of the people i've met online. i always get told i look exactly the same as i do in my photos.

i guess it's because i dont use photoshop to make myself look super-awesome. (yes, people do this. i know, i was shocked too.)

the mirror, on the other hand, can fuck off and die.
the things a filthy liar.

Esoteric 12-20-2009 07:47 AM

I have no use for such nonsense. Vampires can't see their reflections.

Xerxys 12-20-2009 08:48 AM

^^ You must look like crap then!! ... :surprised:

Remember the episode when Angel saw his reflection on another dimension?

Esoteric 12-20-2009 09:00 AM

Oh you.

girldetective 01-05-2010 08:34 PM

I looked a little bit like Gandhi's wife today.

Did Gandhi have a wife?

kramus 01-05-2010 09:44 PM

I'm all handsome and such.

On the other hand, I've seen a shitload of pictures of this thick-bellied, turkey-necked, wrinkly-faced fellow with little pouchy eyes who always wears the same stuff I do, and he is hanging out with my kids, my dog and my Lady. WTF?

settie 01-06-2010 12:51 AM

No, in my mind I'm beautiful and exotic looking, with mesmerizing deep green eyes, and dark red hair.

I ignore mirrors.
They're filled with LIES!
:P

I have always loved this and never knew where it was from. :)

LoganSnake 01-06-2010 04:29 PM

I've never been compared to anyone other than my dad.

I like it that way.

There can only be one of me.
