Leto, you got it! I am in the Mariana Trench. So it' back to you.

The Japanese connection was just because I saw this as I was checking out M.T. facts:

"...In March of 1995, the Japanese unmanned submarine Kaiko was used to conduct further research deep within the Mariana Trench. The Kaiko is a sophisticated vessel with a highly accurate positioning system, allowing scientists to gather important data without the need to endanger a human diver..."

For a minute there I was checking "rules" for this game to see if I had to be in a "country" or someplace conventional like that since the Trench is sort of an odd place. Go Leto.

Leto 06-03-2008 07:20 PM

wow. cool choice.

OKAY folks, Where the Hell Am I?

Tully Mars 06-03-2008 07:35 PM

I agree, good choice. Had me puzzled.

So north of 0 Lat?

SSJTWIZTA 06-04-2008 12:29 AM

SSJTWIZTA 06-04-2008 03:54 AM

Leto 06-04-2008 04:45 AM

pig - yes

Phil - why choose canada? (but yes)

badnick - no

ssjtwizta - yes

I'm looking for more detail than a country or state or province name.

Tully Mars 06-04-2008 05:05 AM

Can you see a "Great Lake" from where you are?

Leto 06-04-2008 05:36 AM

No.

Tully Mars 06-04-2008 05:38 AM

Pacific ocean?

Leto 06-04-2008 05:48 AM

No

(I'll be out for approx an hour long meeting - throw those guesses in!)

Tully Mars 06-04-2008 05:56 AM

Atlantic ocean?

little_tippler 06-04-2008 06:23 AM

Labrador Sea?

Leto 06-04-2008 07:20 AM

Tully: No

Little: No (had to look that one up...)

BadNick 06-04-2008 07:20 AM

are you in B.C.?

Leto 06-04-2008 07:32 AM

No I am not (sure would like to be though!)

BadNick 06-04-2008 07:43 AM

Alberta?

Leto 06-04-2008 08:56 AM

Not Alberta. Your guess is cold. But not as cold as it needs to be.

BadNick 06-04-2008 09:57 AM

ok, trying the other side of Canada even though it's colder:

Might you be in Nunavut?

Leto 06-04-2008 09:59 AM

I am in Nunavut. But where, I wonder?

BadNick 06-04-2008 10:11 AM

hmmm, while you're having fun watching the gorgeous northern lights show and still seeing walrus and polar bears playing in the icey waters, I'll try to guess where in Nunavut.

I'm "feeling" Baffin and since I like saying this word, I'll pick that little island off the coast of Baffin called Qikiqtarjuaq ...can they squeeze any more q's into that name, and not a u in sight?

Are you on Qikiqtarjuaq?

little_tippler 06-04-2008 10:20 AM

Whale Cove...or to be more adventurous...Kugluktuk? lol that's a good name :p

Leto 06-04-2008 11:09 AM

The name of this place has far fewer letters than Qikiqtarjuaq and Kugluktuk.

so no & no, and no to Whale Cove as well.

I don't think that polar bears venture to this place, and its vigilant inhabitants must surely look down their noses at the softy southerners of Baffin Island.

uncle phil 06-04-2008 12:47 PM

ellesmere island?

Leto 06-04-2008 12:52 PM

On the right Island, what is the town?

BadNick 06-04-2008 01:01 PM

Good guess, uncle phil.

I'll say Eureka since it's the second northernmost settlement in the world.

Are you in Eureka?

Ellesmere Island bumblebee trivia:
Ellesmere Island is noted as being the northernmost occurrence of eusocial insects; specifically, the bumblebee Bombus polaris. Interestingly, there is a second species of bumblebee occurring there, Bombus hyperboreus, which is a parasite in the nests of B. polaris.

uncle phil 06-04-2008 01:01 PM

sverdrup?

Leto 06-04-2008 01:11 PM

Badnick, why only go half measures? 2nd? noooo

Phil, keep those graspy little fingers of the Norse (and Danes while I'm at it) off of our land! No, it's not the Sverdrup islands

I'm heading home, if you are vigilant enough to get it, proceed! I'll check in an hour or so.

BadNick 06-04-2008 01:19 PM

...story of my life

OK, then it is probably Alert ...in the Qikiqtaaluk Region of Nunavut Canada. Alert is the northernmost permanently inhabited place in the world.

Are you in Alert?

Leto 06-04-2008 05:02 PM

I am, in fact, in Alert (you were vigilant for the clues).
I think its current population is 75. But they're tough buggers (Canadian military types)

BadNick 06-04-2008 05:24 PM

Cool, I'm even learning more geography in this thread.

OK, here we go again. Where in the World am I?

pig 06-04-2008 07:55 PM

Ok, so let's start. West of the Prime Meridian?

uncle phil 06-05-2008 02:49 AM

north of the equator?

BadNick 06-05-2008 03:46 AM

pig: no
up: no

uncle phil 06-05-2008 03:54 AM

australia?

BadNick 06-05-2008 04:02 AM

uncle phil 06-05-2008 04:21 AM
