commonwealth games
is it just me or is everyone just bored shitless of the commonweath games? to be honest i only saw one race to date. the commentating wasnt too good and was dull at best.
which brings me to my next question...does anyone really give a shit? i mean besides friends and relatives of athletes..who would care to watch an event that is hyped up to be so big, but really doesnt cut it like the olympics. its not really a 'world stage event' because it excludes some of the best athletes in the world based on geographical location. for me...it's a no brainer..what do you guys think?

the coverage from nien was very ordinary - you would think that we were the only country competing with their "aussie-centric" view of the games.
Also bloody annoyed because it pushed Friday night footy back more than an hour. I agree with you - the relevance really is not there anymore. When Australia looks like a track and field powerhouse, you really have to ask what is going on.

in reality australia only really has one..maybe two world class track and field athletes of late..jana pitman and craig mottram. the rest are really no names to the general australian public until a few days ago, and are usually fly by nighters..like that long jumper a few years back.. jai something...... you know..the guy with the long straight black hair.... yeah him.. we came and went and vanished like a fart in the wind.. i guess my point is proven..
spindles is right..when we are topping the tally in athletics, we should really be asking ourselves if why we are using this stage against mediocre competition. maybe this should be a cause to call for a republic. if its to never see this type of one sidedness in sport again id vote republic..but then again maybe thats just me barracking for the underdog again.

I have to agree about the commentary. Worse than Richie Benaud on a rainy day at best - especially the action sports. Supersport (local sports network) had very nice coverage of the entire games. I think there were 5 channels dedicated to just the games, so I saw all the sports and all the teams.
I, however, was surprised at the class of the athletes participating. There were many world records broken, not to mention countless games records. A world record is a world record in my book. It doesnt matter where it's broken. The Commonwealth Games will never compare to the Olympics, but I think they give other, smaller nations a chance to compete on a bigger stage.

Games records? This actually shows the level of mediocrity we are talking about. When you start sub-setting the people who can set a record, you are always going to have a few performers who stand out. In context it looks less impressive (especially when you compare some of these records to the world records)

did you hear the weightlifting commontary especially the womens Darryl Eastlake would have to be the most embarrising person alive, he said one of the competitors would 'get as extra papua at tea tonight cos she did a good lift and the other said there is nothing like a womens snatch ....funny maybe but not when being broadcast on free to air telly and at an international meet

darryl eastlakes has got to be the best State of Origin commentator in the short history of State of Origin. but when it comes to anything else..especially with something with a LOT less atmosphere like weight lifting, i think he overdoes it by a country mile.
as for the coverage, i dont have pay tv so ill settle for channel 9 coverage. to be honest i dont know how many records were broken. for me a commonwealth record isnt really a record nor a milestone. but yeah id agree with healer that a world record is a world record no matter where its broken. but having a one sided games where australia totally dominated the games having beaten 2nd placed england by 111 metals in total (also beating them by 50 odd gold medals) is just ridiculous. is australia really obsessed with only sport? heres the tally of the top 5... just a question... lesotho is in sth africa right? cos lesotho came in at 36 or 37 in the games..have they claimed independance from SA or what? maybe healer can help us out here.... G S B Total 1. Australia 84 69 68 221 2. England 36 40 34 110 3. Canada 26 29 31 86 4. India 22 17 11 50 5. Republic of South Africa 12 13 13 38
