Oh my god! Apple pie...is there nothing it can't do? Costco has an amazing apple pie. It's huge, it's cheap, it's effin' delicious. It is the pie used for THAT scene in "American Pie."
Heat a slice and throw on some good cheddar... bliss.

Cheese and apples? Are you serious? I've never heard of that. You really can't go wrong with cheese, but I don't know about this.

I LUV apple pie. French, American, and Southern style are good...........but it's all about Dutch Apple Pie for me. 1/2 an inch of brown sugary goodness on top = teh win.
Hot or Cold? Both have their perks. Topping? If someone bothered to get out......sure. But I don't bother to get stuff out myself. Cheese? On the side............usually.

what's inside is more important...fresh apples are a must, mixed with a little homemade apple sauce to get the right consistancy....not to mention the a nice shot of congac to finish it off in the last few minutes of baking...which is why it's important not to have a top crust.

True quick story.
I was on vacation in Toronto where the have a shop called "Just Desserts" that serves, well...just desserts. I ordered an apple pie and the waitress asked me if I wanted it warmed up with a scoop of ice cream on it. Does this question even need to be asked?? I mean, is there any other way to have it?? P.S. I've heard many stories about putting cheddar on it, but never tried it. I may have to, just to see.

The correct way to serve apple pie is...hotter than pizza! The scoop of vanilla ice cream alongside the slice is to soothe your burned tongue. If you're in some hoity-toity restaurant, there might be some caramel drizzled across it. That's nice but not required. Cheese and ice cream don't go too well together here, so choose either but not both. |

real cheddar cheese on apple pie is breakfast at my house.
if you're going to put ice cream on top try vanilla ice cream with just a little bit of cinnamon in it. that's how they do it in julian (apple pie heaven) in so cal.

Although, I would add that apple pie should only be hot when just baked. Leftovers (if they exist) must be cold, and for breakfast or a snack. And the ice cream isn't really necessary, but nice. |

My mother in law puts raisins in one apple pie for me and her at Thanksgiving. I know it sounds gross to some people, but if you love raisins, try it!

If you try the cheddar on top use old cheddar. The mild and medium ones are not as good on the pie. My grandfather used to eat it that way all the time and now I do too. Although a good hot caramel or rum sauce is good with it too.

If apples and cheese can work well in fondue, I can see why it would work in apple pie. I haven't tried it, but it sounds tasty together.
As for me, I don't like apple pie. When I do eat it, I prefer warmed pie with vanilla or french vanilla ice cream.

I like mine very hot, with ice cream.
(Apple pies, and women, that is... :-)) So, sort-of on topic, what sort of apples do you put in your apple pie? 3 winesap, 2 granny smith is my current preferred ratio. If I can't find/don't have winesap, I go with braeburn, or fuji. What about you guys? |

Yeppers - Warm with ice cream (vanilla bean)
- on the cheese variation - my mom used to make an apple pie with cheese (tillamok x-sharp cheddar) and sausage (maple-link-breakfast-type) baked in it - Sounds bizarre, but it was fantastic.

Temperature: No preference. Cold is great and has a very "fresh" feel to it, but hot is delicious as well.
Topping: Vanilla ice cream - on top or on side. Cheese just sounds absolutely gross - never heard of that before.

Hot if it's fresh out of the oven, otherwise chilled is fine.
I usually don't eat it with any topping, and I've never tried it with cheese, but I just may now that you mentioned it. Sounds harmless enough, eh?

If going with just one, and I have the luxury of choice, it's gotta be Cortlands. Macoun, Spygold, and Winesap are good too, but I have very little respect for the Granny Smith; imnsho it's the most overrated variety of apple. (hey...I SAID I was an apple snob! ) |

Apple Pie? I'm super picky about my apple pie. For one, it can't be super jelly-like. Ick. I make mine with braeburn during the winter, but in the fall, I pick up a bag or two of apples at the farmer's market. I don't know what kind they are... just small and yummy.
Then I peel and dice the apples, then toss them in cinnamon and sugar with just a splash of water and a dash of flour. The crust is the simplest: just crisco (butter flavored), flour, and water, and pinch of salt. Top and Bottom Crust. The finished pie is nicely held together, not overly sweet. Best the next day, cold from the fridge, the slightly warmed in the microwave. Coolwhip, ice cream, cheese: WHY? I've never understood the appeal. Apple Pie is Good Enough for Me.

I'm a cafe manager, and see people ask for cheddar with their apple pie. First time I saw that I was completely shocked and dumbfounded - I had never heard of that before. Was always, and still am, the warmed with vanilla ice cream type of person. Even better with some caramel sauce over top of it!
tonight I had a slice of toffee apple cheesecake - holy crap that was amazing! maybe one day I'll work up the courage for the cheddar thing
