To Mayo or not to mayo....

This has been bothering me for about 6 months now.

About 6 months ago we had hotdogs/chilidogs for lunch here at work. There was probably about 12 of us (spouses included) and everyone was doing there thing.

When I went to fix my hotdog bun I grabbed the mayo and started putting some on my bun. It got kind of quiet and as I looked up everyone was just staring at me preparing my bun. I had to look to make sure my fly wasn't open.

I asked what the problem was and one of the ladies I work with exclaimed, "You're putting mayo on your hotdog!?" I said yeah, so....

They all started questioning me like I was some sort of weird freak. Yes I do like mustard and relish on my hotdog too. I don't like ketchup on anything, but that's a different story.

Anyway, so I ask them, "You eat hambrugers with mayo, right? How about bologna sandwiches, or ham sandwiches, or tuna sandwiches, or chicken salad sandwiches with mayo?" They say yes to most. I know some don't like mayo on hamburgers and that's cool. Sometimes I do sometimes I don't.

Now these are the same people that put peanuts in their cokes and they say that I'm weird for putting mayo on my hotdog?

I guess my burning question is how many here put mayo on their hotdog. Or am I just really strane in a weird kind of way?

Should this be in the tilted cooking or should it be maybe in the tilted living section or somewhere else?

I put mayo on my hot dogs.

Some people don't underatand the concept of "different strokes for different folks". I get shit from my friends for putting ketchup on my turkey sandwiches. Big whoop. My friend eats chicken feet. It's not something I like to eat but hey, eat whatever the heck you want. Who cares. I hate getting shit for eating the stuff I eat. I'm not forcing anyone to eat or like what I like. Even though I did convince my ex gf to put ketchup on her turkey sandwich and now she does it all the time. So c'mon, give people a break for having distinct tastes. Give it a try even! You never know, you might like it. Eat your hot dogs with all the mayo you want, brother! More power to you!

no... i don't.. but i was going to make a thread about what people put on their hotdogs because when I was in iceland.. they put...

a remoulade sauce
ketchup
mustard
crispy fried onions
and last but not least...

potato salad.

Tdoggg 08-27-2004 02:16 PM

I also put Mayo on hot dogs whenever its available. Its usually not available most places that I buy hot dogs like Baseball games, concerts, and stuff, so then I just eat it dry.....bleh.....

edmos1 08-27-2004 03:59 PM

peanuts in coke?
I have never put mayo on a hot dog, and don't put it on a hamburger either, that being said, i really do not use to much Mayo, I am not "crazy" like some people who are frightened of Mayo, but I do use sparingly,
For salads, (Tuna, Chicken, egg) will mix mustard and mayo.
In the end I have never put mayo on a hot dog, and probably never will, but if you like it then go ahead, lots of people do not put Saurkraut on a hotdog....

Hanxter 08-28-2004 11:02 AM

hot dogs sliced in 1" inch cubes with bbq sauce and grape jelly in a crock pot...

pass the tooth picks :D

thubpt 08-28-2004 02:38 PM

Grape Jelly is the bomb in sloppy joes!

maleficent 08-28-2004 02:42 PM

I can't stand commercial mayo, it's just got no flavor at all, and it's got an awful after taste. Putting it on hotdogs wouldn't be strange, but I'd never do it... Hot dogs are kinda bland themselves they need something with kick like mustard.

Garlic Aoli however, is the bomb...

alicat 08-28-2004 07:19 PM

Mayo on hotdogs... No, sorry, I don't do that. I do however love mayo, so I might just give this a try! I feel for ya though. I put ketchup and syrup on my sausage/egg/cheese McBiscuits. My DH will not even look at me when I'm eating them this way :D. I also have to have syrup (at home or out) on bacon, sausage and hashbrowns. Not to plug Mickey D's, but I also request Sweet and Sour sauce to dip my fries in vs. ketchup (although I think they have the best fast food ketchup!).

crfpilot 08-28-2004 09:41 PM

hmmmm, mayo on hotdogs huh? I'll have to try it. My ole lady eats mayo on her curly fries.

Willravel 08-29-2004 12:07 AM

I think I would have reacted in the same way. I mean I've had some people question me with my peanutbutter an onion sandwiches, and I can understand that, but mayo on a hot dog? Totally normal. Enjoy.

RainbowBright 08-29-2004 08:12 PM

I don't put mayo on my hot dog but I don't put mayo on anything yuck. I have pretty bland tastes and pretty much stick with ketchup as the condiment of choice.

I like your taste, except for ketchup. I love syrup on my bacon, sausage, eggs and hasbrowns and I love the McGriddles from Micky D's.

Sweet and sour sauce for fries? I thought I was the only one.

I also like dipping my fries in my chocolate shake.

Back on topic: I have tried almost everything on hot dogs and nothing is unusual or weird to me. I like chilidogs with mustard and cheese and jalapenos and some Tabasco sauce on it.

To me a hot dog is like bologna only rolled up. So what is the big deal about putting mayo on it?

Oh well rant over. :|

splck 08-30-2004 09:12 AM

mayo is great on hotdogs and hamburgers and as a condiment for fries.
I have no idea why people like ketchup on everything, the stuff disgusts me.

Schwan 08-30-2004 09:18 AM

I like my burgers with mayo and ketchup, but it never crossed my mind to add mayo to a hotdog. But then again, why not? I'm going to try it tommorow.

maleficent 08-30-2004 09:19 AM

I think it's Belgium that it's standard practice to put mayo on fries... I guess it's OK if you like mayo...

(I've aquired a taste for malt vinegar and salt on fries)

Ketchup -- blech - it's too sweet.

Rodney 08-30-2004 09:31 AM

When I was a kid, I put mayo on hot dogs. Then my tastes changed. Hell, now I don't even eat hot dogs. But there's nothing wrong with doing so. It's just your taste.

Frankly, if you've seen all the different ways that people eat hot dogs (including those mentioned in this column), you'd know that there is no "right" set of condiments. People do any damned thing. For example, there's Chicago-style, which practically includes putting a salad on top of the dog including big spears of dill pickle and even serrano chiles sometimes. I've also heard of taking a hot dog, wrapping it in raw bacon, and deep-frying it, then serving it in a bun. HARD CORE!

Yes, hot dogs are basically bland. That's why people can (and should) go so many different ways with the condiments.

little_tippler 09-01-2004 09:02 AM

yum that deep fried bacon wrapped dog sounds excellent! will try it.

Mayo on your hot dog, your burger, your fries...it's all good. I've been to Belgium and they have the most excellent fries, and even better when you dip them in mayo. I can tell you how they do it. They first slightly fry the chips, then take them out. If you're making them at home, Take them out onto a plate or whatever and cover them with some kitchen paper and place in the oven for 5 mins (or longer if your meal or whatever isn't ready). Then refry them! Trust me, they'll be the crispest, meltiest chips you'll have ever tried all in one. Good tip is to cut them quite thick too. They do use a special variety of potato in Belgium, but if you do this they'll be almost as good!

Yay for quirky foods, if you don't try it, you don't know what your missing. From personal experience, sometimes making up combinations can lead you to the best surprises.

SinisterMotives 09-06-2004 03:42 PM

I put mayonnaise on hot dogs too. It's about the only condiment I use besides Tabasco sauce. The flavor of yellow mustard is just too overpowering for most foods. Its only legitimate use is painted thinly onto fish filets prior to rolling in corn meal and frying, as far as I'm concerned. I eat french fries plain, with no ketchup or anything. I never put anything on steaks except salt and pepper. I hate nearly all salad dressings except for buttermilk ranch. If food is cooked right to begin with, it doesn't need to be doused with vinegar-based condiments to taste good.

Amen to that last statement

First time I had solt an vinnega was in Scotland. You ask for fish and chips and they ask you if you want solt an vinnega on them. MMMMM MMMMMM MMMMMM.

I eat fish and fries like that now.

Mbwuto 09-22-2004 09:02 PM

To elaborate on the peanuts in coke thing...My mother has told me before that her favorite thing to do at baseball games was drop of a pack of peanuts into a(and this was stressed) glass bottle of Dr. Pepper. Only Dr. Pepper though. She says it was very common when she was growing up. To give regional reference, West texas just below the panhandle.

For some reason this just strikes me as a Southern thing.

Malt vinegar on fried fish and fries...heavenly. Myself though, I really don't like the taste of mayo much at all. Hot dugs get mustard relish and sweated onions.

KellyC 09-22-2004 10:09 PM

I don't use mayo on anything, ever. I just don't like it...

For Hot dog I use this Hot Sauce on it

http://www.huyfong.com/images/sriracha.jpg

It seems like my family are the only people who do that, but that's ok.

I also like to put some chopped up onion, relish and CHEDDAR CHEESE!! I can't explain it to you, just get some and use to your heart's content. I think my mouth had an orgasm once because of that :D

MikeTitan 10-02-2004 12:00 AM

hmm. Mayo is just wrong all together. I am more of a miracle whip man. Miracle on anything cold and sandwichy. I also use it for deviled eggs. Only 2 condiments go on warm beef, (hotdogs, hamburger) That is ketchup and mustard. Also no lettuce on hamburgers. :)

Chingal0 10-02-2004 12:15 AM

Miracle Whip is pure shit.

Mayo on whatever you want, it's your food!

And yes, mayo on my hotdog please.

mattevil 10-03-2004 11:53 AM

I've always put mayo on my hotdogs and peanut butter on my smores!

scansinboy 10-03-2004 11:05 PM

I used to mix up some mayo and ketchup to dip my fries in at school or work or wherever, then one day I added some barbque sauce to the mix... MMM, MMM delicious!

I called it Ketch-Q-Naise. My co-workers thought I was insane.

On a side note, I like strawberry yogurt on top of cottage cheese, with croutons.

TonySpilotro 10-07-2004 07:57 AM

you would get kicked out of a dog stand in Chicago asking for mayo, but we put about everything else except ketchup on our dogs. "Run it through the garden" as they say.

I am definitely sick in my own ways though: going through a gallon of Tabasco every 3-4 months, lemon juice on pizza, loads of balsamic vinegar on everything, etc. I am the quintissential excess user of condiments...

screamincheetah 10-09-2004 09:04 AM

ALWAYS MAYO! ALWAYS MAYO! It's great to add to a lot of different dishes as a way of making them creamier. Example: Pesto (which is the best sauce of all times) mixed with a little mayo makes........you guessed it a creamy Pesto....mmmmmmmmm

Oed 10-09-2004 08:09 PM

Mayo on hotdog...can't say that I have, but it sounds really good. If I would have seen you doing it, I would have taken notice and probably tried it myself (just never thought of it).

Now, that is using only home made mayo...store stuff is junk.

Question about the peanut thing...I have never heard or seen this practice (from the north side of the US)...so it is just normal peanuts right? Not salted or anything like that? Another something I would like to try, but want to know more about.

william 10-13-2004 07:11 PM

I don't use mayo on my hotdogs; but my gf does. Personally, if you like mayo, stfw? Don't knock my mustard on brownies, I won't knock your mayo on hotdogs.

yankeefatboy 10-13-2004 09:41 PM

Now that's a dumb question. Of course I put mayo on my hot dogs. It helps cut the "heat" from the hot peppers.

1slOwCD8 10-14-2004 03:29 PM

i put mayo on my hotdog, and ketchup too, so i dont know what to tell you.

Jay Francis 10-16-2004 06:44 AM

I think hot dogs need the vinegar bite of mustard to match the seasonings of the hot dog meet.

shakran 10-17-2004 07:29 AM

Wait a second. I wanna know more about putting peanuts in coke. Why do they do this?

And they shouldn't care if you want to put peanut butter on your hotdogs. They don't have to eat it, so they can just relax.

stevo 10-22-2004 05:07 PM

I saw a classmate of mine put mayo on a hotdog once and I was like, "what the hell are you doing?" but she was from russia so I wasn't that suprised. But then when I thought about it, it really isn't that odd. I mean I eat every hot dog I can with coleslaw on top and a strip of ketchup and mustard. They call them slaw-dogs. I guess its a southern thing. Anyone ever have one? If not I highly recommend trying it once, you really don't know what you are missing.

One time I made a cheeseburger and put a fried egg on top. A little ketchup and mayo, a pickle, lettuce and tomato. Now that was an artery clogger. but a damn good one.

TheBeermaster 10-23-2004 05:39 PM

Ketchup is way overrated, covers up too much of anythings natural flavor. Use ketchup if you're trying to hide a mistake or on a plain crappy dish.

Mayo + hotdog = I'll have to try that, Only ever used mustard (in spare amounts) my non smoking tastebuds do not need alot of seasoning.

Oh yeah, Mayo on fries is pretty delish

Come on people, you need to taste the food, not cover it up.

Yes, I do. But peanuts in Coke? I've never heard of that one.

Stug 10-27-2004 03:26 AM

I'm a mayo addict! Maybe this comes from smoking too much pot in the past and - whilst in a fit of munchies - combining pretty much everything in my cupboard in one way or another. Anyway the result is now I like the smoothness of mayo with lots of dishes where it probably shouldn't even get near... For example there's something deeply wrong (but heavenly tasty) about having a blob of mayo on a plate that contains gravy and minced beef... hmmmmm gravylicious!

Suave 10-27-2004 02:23 PM

Mayo is evil. The one area where I will accept mayo, as there seems to be no good alternative, is in certain dressings (specifically, the SouthWest sauce at SubWay). Mayonnaise is not a food product, or a condiment. It is a dastardly evil symbiotic being come to destroy our species. Plus it's gross.

As for hotdogs, ketchup, mustard, relish, and CHEESE WIZ! Mmmmm. Ohh, and maybe ceyenne pepper.
