Thinking about getting a separate freezer...

Anyone have one? Do you get good use out of it? Any recommendations on type?

All thoughts appreciated.

I have a fair sized one from sears. My GF and I love it. Make sure you know what size you need and where you plan to put it.

growing up we used to have a deep freezer..... top loader. It was awesome.

I don't think the brand is as as important as the style. I have had both upright, and chest type deep freezes, and each has it's advantages, and disadvantages.

With upright ones, you can pretty well see what you have stored, and make the best use of whats in there, But to me, they just won't hold as much. The chest type seem to hold a bunch (like a half a cow) of product, but knowing, and using whats on the bottom can sometimes be a problem. One thing for sure, if you opt for a chest freezer, make sure it has baskets that hang down from the top. With them you can slide one over to get to things on the lower level.

Thanks for the responses. I'm leaning towards getting the chest variety - capacity and efficiency in holding in the cold when opened seem to make it the better choice.

Unoaman - thanks for the input on the baskets - sometimes it's hard enough to find things in the freezer compartment of the refrigerator - let alone something that is three feet deep.

I had to get a second freezer, both are chest because of the space. I use more wild game and fish, and objections were raised... thus the second freezer

i have a 22 cubic foot chest and it's stuffed all the time with everything from scallops to venison - shark to pork loins - fowl to prime rib roasts... the problem is rotating the stock - every once in a while i have to haul it all out and rearrange it all...

but, with a chest, when you open it the cold doesn't flow out the bottom like it would with an upright...

i do like the new uprights that have two side by side doors and an inner door for each outer door - you can see watch ya got and don't lose that chilling feeling

I have a 7.2 Kenmore I bought because I live in an apartment. Nice to have alongside the refrigerator. Frances came and killed power for 3 days. Kept everything cold.

We had a separate freezer for a while but found it too tempting to stock up on lots of things we ended up on forgetting about.
We now have 2 fridges, both with freezers at the top. Using these 2 small freezers gives us enough space to store a fortnight's food, and we don't end up throwing food out every 6 mths because we forgot about it down the bottom of the freezer.
Even when frozen food still becomes stale. The process just takes a lot longer.

Do it! Get whatever type works best for you. There is never enough space in the damn freezer!

Whatever you do, get a "Frost-Free". It MAY cost you more in power,
but thawing out ice build-up, is a pain in the ass.
