Cooking for IBS..anyone here ??

Anyone here have IBS and have to watch the way they eat? I can no longer eat redmeat or dairy products, just wondering if anyone has any good food ideas?

Currently I eat a lot of chicken, bread, rices and pastas. I don't really miss red meat but I do miss spagetti(sp) and chillies..

Just doing some googling brought up this from WebMD
Foods to Choose with IBS

Add Soluble Fiber to Your IBS Diet

With pears for dessert, you'll be getting soluble fiber, which is key to managing your IBS and diarrhea through diet.

Soluble fiber is the gentler type of fiber that tends to stabilize the intestines. While soluble fiber is in your intestines it holds onto water and forms a gel -- slowing down the passage of food -- which is usually a good thing for people who suffer with diarrhea. Other foods high in soluble fiber include:

Beans (beans contain both soluble and insoluble fiber and can cause gas in some people)
Oats and oat bran
Barley
Peeled apples and applesauce
Bananas
Citrus fruits
Carrots
Green beans
Pears
Potatoes
Psyllium fiber supplements (such as Metamucil) also provide soluble fiber.

Go Easy on Your Gut

Some people with IBS and diarrhea have trouble with certain fruits and vegetables. Here are fruits and vegetables that tend to be well tolerated by the bowels, plus their fiber totals:

Vegetables to Try (cooked) Serving Size Fiber (grams)
Asparagus 1 cup 3.7
Beets, canned, diced 1 cup 3.7
Carrots 1 cup 4
Green or yellow beans 1 cup 4
Green peas 1 cup 8.8
Mushroom pieces, canned ½ cup 2
Potato, baked 1 medium 5
Sweet potato, baked 1 medium 3.6
Spinach, boiled ½ cup 2.2
(*Raw spinach and lettuce can cause trouble for some people)
Winter squash, baked 1 cup 5.7
Pumpkin, canned ½ cup 3.5
Zucchini slices, steamed 1 cup 2.2

Fruits to Try Serving Size Fiber (grams)
Apple (peeled) 1 large 4.2
Applesauce, unsweetened 1 cup 3
Apricots 1 cup 3
Banana 1 medium 2.3
Grapefruit 1 cup 3
Nectarine 1 cup 2.2
Kiwi 2 3
Orange sections 1 cup 3.4
Peach (peeled) 1 cup 3.1
Canned peaches 1 cup 3.6
Pear slices 1 cup 4
Canned pears 1 cup 3.6

My girlfriend has IBS and I have Ulcerative Colitis...its pretty shitty *ROMSHIT*

Anyways...check out this website for a lot of helpful hints and recipes to help keep everything in check.
http://www.helpforibs.com/

Also I would like to recommend Aloe Vera Juice. Get that natural stuff. I have heard people with bowel problems drinking this stuff and almost being completely cured (if thats even possible).
And make sure its the natural stuff, not the processed stuff. I just got myself I alot yesterday and am starting to drink it today...I'm sure in about two months time I will see a huge difference in my bowels.

Terrible! But I'm sure I will get used to it. I mean, if I can drink a beer, I can certainly drink this daily without throwing up. Plus I truly believe it will help me a bunch.
Think of aloe vera on the outside of your body and how it helps with burns, cuts, and things of that sort. Now imagine what it will do in the body. I really really recommend it. Just do a google search about its effect with people with IBS/IBD and you will see its all positive.

The first time my mother ordered it from her herbalist. I was stupid and didn't really drink it. It ended up spoiling. But since my colitis has been messing with me for over a month, I've been trying to find some again.
My girlfriend found a Gallon of it at Sam's Club. I'm not sure if they have those in Nova Scotia but its like a BJ's Warehouse or CostCo (if they even have that there). She said it cost about $5 and its natural so thats good.
The bottle says to drink a glass a day.
I'm at work right now, but I'll try and remember and see if there is some sort of website listed on the bottle when I get home.

My girlfriend is a vegetarian and so are most of my friends (I don't think I will ever fully understand why), but they love this new BK Veggie Burger. I tried it but wasn't a big fan.

I know at the grocery store there are veggie burgers...I think the company is called "Morningstar Farms" or something like that. All I remember is the box is Red...sorry for not being much help with the name. But anyways....That stuff is really good. I like it a lot.

There are also BOCA burgers and those are supposed to be really good, but I've never tried one and if I had the choice...I would order the real deal.

If you google a recipe for veggie burgers, a bunch of sites will come up....give it a go.

edit: found a website for ya http://www.kelloggs.com/brand/msfarms/home.html

I think their products are what my girlfriend stocks my freezer with, but I can only tell if I see the sides of the box (cause how they are stacked in the freezer). Explore that site for a bit and you can find out where to get some if you want.

edit #2: here is another website...I'm pretty sure these are the burgers I am talking about

In my neck of the woods, you can get some pretty darned good sausages that are made of chicken or turkey, without any pork or beef. Not cheap, but you may want to look into that for a special-treat kind of thing. They're just about as good as the red-meat variety, though a little easier on the stomach for some reason.

Ill have to try those. Thanks for the info.

And Rodney....red meat can be a trigger food for people with IBS/IBD. That is probably why those deliscous sounding sausages are easier on the stomach.
