Are raw sprouts really unhealthy?
At times I've been into eating sprouts. Especially on a good tuna sandwich.
Recently, I've seen anti-sprout warnings at restaraunts and the local food co-op. These signs warn the raw sprouts can carry food borne illness. I don't know, this just seems a bit hokey to me. Has anyone experienced sprout borne illness first or second hand? |

they go bad fast - and that's when you don't wanna eat em. make sure they're firm and not discoloured, and well washed.

what might makeS you sick actually is in the seed itself, before it even grows.trace amounts remain and you would actually have to eat mass quantities. elderly and youger people are most in danger. there have been a few, cases of illness traced back to sprouts but not that many. restaraunts are required by law to tell you if you eat anything raw you can get sick. usually printed right on menu or visible when you first walk in. and they are COVERING THERE OWN ASS most of all. eat and enjoy your sprouts.

i stay away from them. just use some good lettuce or cucumbers, you can even matchstick the cucumbers to get a similar taste.

esp. alfalfa sprouts.
the following is from the fda warning letter site you can view the full letter here. letter to kim's sprouts this is not why sprouts are unhealthy in general and yet while i was doing further research on why sprouts are unhealthy and ran across it and almost puked. here's a small sample from the letter. 1. Rodent activity in the warehouse: a. Rodent excreta and rodent urine stains were found on a lot of approximately [redacted] kilogram paper bags of Cor Soy Bean seeds, identified as lot #CS 17, stored in the dry storage room. Several rodent excreta pellets were found on thirteen bags, and urine stains were found on one bag. b. Several rodent excreta pellets were found on six bags, and urine stains were found on three bags, 2. Poor employee practices: a. Trash cans used to transport your sprouts from the washing tank to the staging table are not properly stored. You currently store them directly on a dirty floor and nesting inside one another. b. The screen used to remove sprouts from the washing tubs is stored directly on the floor when not being used. The screen is not cleaned or sanitized, and the floor is covered with water and debris. c. An employee was observed picking up garbage from the floor, and pushing water down the staging table holding finished product without washing her hands. yum yum.

Yep. Most people that come down with food poisining at a restaurant will attribute it to whatever protein they ate with the meal. However nine times out of ten (yeah I made up the numbers, so what?) it will have been the cause of something uncooked. Lettuce in the salad, even some little garnish or the onion on the burger. Restaurant employee's are nasty filthy people and they will get you sick from time to time.
