Sushi Anyone?

I love sushi. My favorite kinds are:

Toro
Maguro
Tobiko with Quail egg
Unagi
Saba
Salmon

What are your favorites?
:p

Macheath 04-22-2003 03:38 PM

I have to confess, I'm guilty of not paying attention to the different kinds of sushi that I eat - I love them all.

I always go to sushi trains and just grab whatever looks nice off the conveyor. I should probably pay more attention to the written menu.

I do like watching a good sushi chef work though, those guys are amazing.

Cubby 04-22-2003 05:25 PM

My favorite types of Sushi rolls are the Dynamite roll (Tempura shrimp), BC Roll (Salmon skin) and Yam roll. My favorite sashimi is definitely salmon. As for sushi...I'd say the Unagi (BBQ eel) is great!

Best part about sushi is actually making it. I've only done that a couple of times but it's a hoot.

snowy 04-23-2003 08:13 PM

mm...unagi...mmm. i love the smoky taste of any sushi with unagi in it. typically i order whatever the sushi chef's special is--our little Japanese place here in town does one that has avocado in it, shrimp and salmon. Mmm, very good.

yabobo 04-24-2003 03:51 AM

I too am guilty of not knowing what I eat but love them all.

In Korea I've eaten live octopussy on a stick!

Once! never again not even for cash....

Hitchcock 04-24-2003 07:05 AM

I like them all, but my favorite is smoked salmon and cream cheese. Also, anything with fried salmon skin in it is awesome!

sierra2774 04-24-2003 07:20 AM

I have never tried it before, but I would like too.

edmos1 04-24-2003 08:42 AM

I am a fan of the spider roll, soft shell crap in tempura batter in a roll

Peetster 04-24-2003 08:45 AM

Anything but sea urchin. Ugh!

I roll my own at home. The rolls are not too hard to make with a bamboo roller, as long as the rice is sticky.

same here, but my favorites are any kind with rice on the outside, yummy:p

splck 04-24-2003 09:28 AM

I'm crazy about sushi. I live in an area that has lots of great cheap sushi joints.
My favorites are:
Uni
Unagi
Toro
Saba
Ukura
Ama ebi with fried heads
I don't order rolls with city names or with gobs of mayo or cream cheese in them, they just don't cut it for me.
I do like small simple maki roll's like Salmon maki and Tuna maki.

Here's a take out tray we had tonight. It costs $28 CDN, about $16 US....it's good to know your Itamae, he'll give you good deals:p

Ganguro 04-24-2003 02:55 PM

that's beautiful..
*sniff*
I HATE BEING BROKE!

I do know if you go to your local asian market sometimes you can buy their bbq'ed smoked eel flash frozen for 4 bucks.. A whole fucking eel!!.. now THAT is a value.

oh yeah..and i loove the unagi, but im not too impartial to anything with quail eggs on it.

carnivore 04-27-2003 11:56 AM

Fuckin' shit, dude. I want that plate of goodness.

I'm gonna cry now...

I've never had good uni. What do you like about it?

One time at Fuji Do in Harrisburg (highly reccomended. go and see Twan if you can.)

I got ama ibi, and there it comes with the deep-fried heads of the shrimp. I didn't eat them an the waitress came and said, "You didn't eat that? it's the best part." I thought it was a game--get the round-eye to eat the garnish, but she was serious. I ate them. Tasty. The second(long) antennae are a bit awkward, but it's neat.

zfleebin 04-27-2003 11:12 PM

Ive been eating sushi since I was a little kid and My favorites are unagi, california rolls, octopuss spider roll, caterpillar rolls.

Daval 04-28-2003 09:46 AM

All of the Sushi's in the picture I like with the following exceptions:-

1. Not ever had the Uni or Tobiko
2. Not a fan of Unagi

Thanks for the names though! I've never known what they were called.

I would say that Tuna is my favourite.

It took a while before I tried uni because I had friends tell me it was gross. When I was sitting at a sushi bar the Itamae asked if ever tried uni, I said no and he promply put two in front of me. He said you must eat at least two or three before you can aquire a taste. The rest is history and uni is by far my favorite now.
He did the same thing to me for the ama ebi fried head too. It's a bit wierd but very tasty too.
I'd recommend sitting at the bar and try and get to know the guy making your food and try different stuff...you may even be given freebies:)

I TRIED UNI AND I GUESS I NEVER AQUIRED THE TASTE FOR IT, I'M NOT GOING TO SAY WHAT IT TASTED LIKE, (BUT LETS JUST SAY AN AVERAGE STREET BUM EATS OUT OF SOMETHING THAT TASTES LIKE UNI DAILY)!

Ratman 05-01-2003 06:53 PM

If it's raw, and it's fish, I will eat it! Don't forget sashimi!

SexyCat 05-01-2003 07:39 PM

Sushi is always so pretty. My favorite time ever was when my boyfriend bought me a really expensive bento box dinner...it was the absolute best ever!

kipperoo3 05-01-2003 08:37 PM

I love sushi! Where I live now, it's really hard to get anything good, but I've been quite a few places where it's excellent!

Check out this survey of peoples favorite types of sushi.

Ripsaw 01-14-2005 10:40 AM

I just had a wonderful lunch with a serving of uni sashimi, fresh from the shelll. It was delicious, and reminded me of the ocean. Another diner casually asked me how my meal was, and related to me a story about his trip to Greece. He said he was diving for sea urchins, and when they got topside, the divemaster handed out some limes. They cracked open the shells, squirted the lime inside, and scooped out the most delicious eggs ever eaten. I'm headed for Greece.

Ah yes, I sampled both East and West coast sea urchin. I must say, the Pacific bred sea urchin was much larger, and tastier than it's brethren from Maine. It must have something to do with the temperature of the water. Does anyone else have any regional favorites?

MiSo 01-14-2005 02:43 PM

<- occupation sushi chef

my favorite sushi includes:
Tuna, Saba, Eel, Surf Clam, Octopus, Conch. my #1 fav is Ikura.

i hate raw salmon and white tuna because its very oily.
salmon is okay when its cooked though.
white tuna isn't even a tuna. it's escolar! they just call it white tuna to sell it.
the real white tuna is abalone and i dont like that one much because its way too soft for my taste. its about as soft as uni.

if you ever go to a sushi bar and ask what the white fish is.. most places use ""Red Snapper". i put those in quotations because it really isn't red snapper. it just looks like red snapper. its really talapia. but the restaurant wont tell you that because talapia is kinda at the bottom of the exotic fish list. some places might tell you its Izumidai which is the correct japanese name. but its really talapia.

Don't you mean Albacore? Abalone is a shell fish, and an expensive one at that.

Mmmmm..uni

yellowchef 01-15-2005 04:49 AM

ewwwwwww white tuna is sooooo mushy.. and salmon is good, but mushy to cut. I hate skinning salmon because its all oily and soft. Damn all that for $16USD thats pretty cheap for all that :)

I know my sushi bar doesnt use talapia because I dont like talapia very much.. and I know the staff down there and Ive seen them clean whole fishes. :)

And they use yellowtail tuna.. which is $$$ but they sell soooo much sushi.. its amazing the place is always packed and I cant leave without dropping $25 or more. Even the beer, and tempura and snacks are very cheap

Charlatan 01-15-2005 07:05 AM

Maki and Sashimi are my types... not big on the more slimy looking types... I'm a bit of a picky eater.

roderickpsu 01-15-2005 07:42 PM

I'm a vegetarian, but there are still a bunch of really good vegetarian ones out there with cucumber, avocado, carrots, etc...it's surprising how similar they taste to sushi with fish in it

Willravel 01-15-2005 10:21 PM

Masa Restaurant - Time Warner Center
10 Columbus Circle
New York City, NY
(212)823-9800

Ginza Sushiko closed Ginza Sushiko Restaurant in Beverly Hills, that bastard.

I paid an arm and a leg for first class plane tickets, a hotel, SNL tickets, broadway tickets, and a slew of other americana the last time I visited NY. This was by far the best money spent. Despite the $600 bill (+$90 tip, yikes), this was the best sushi experience of my life. Every time I visit NY now, I end up here. Book about a year in advance. Seriously.

Zephyr66 01-15-2005 10:25 PM

I'm ashamed of the fact that i have yet to try sushi, i think I'll call some of my buddies up and see if they want to go to a sushi place sometime later this week.

Malou 01-20-2005 05:22 PM

I think you should I remember loving it the first time I had it... The best piece of sushi I ever had was in Hong Kong at one of those crazy rotating sushit bars... I had something like a blue lobster thing... It t'was good

sashime76 02-02-2005 09:43 AM

I'd go for sashime if I can, the rice part fills you up too quickly. Many consider it "imitation" Japanese food but I like Todai and Onami restaurants. Usually you get charged by piece with sushi, I'd go broke before I can fill my stomach half way.

Force 10 02-07-2005 07:30 AM

Sashime - Himachi and Tobico are my favs. Although I love the snaper with a lemon as well ;-)

I can stand sea urchin!! It is the one food that makes my stomach turn!!!

boredom 02-07-2005 09:15 PM

hmm all about Uni, Ikura, hotate, and Hokigai clams
and masago

Manuel Hong 02-08-2005 06:02 PM

My favorites are oyster special (w/ uni and quail's egg-yum!), fatty tuna (gotta be fresh, not frozen), spanish makerel, spider roll, spicy scallop, oh...so many! It's hard to go out for sushi when I always drop a hundred bucks....almost never happens anymore (esp since my current bf doesn't like it).
Home sushi: sugar/soy sauce reduction, saute portobello slices, roll with cuke or avocado, nori and rice....fabulous.

majik_6 02-17-2005 10:39 AM

I'm actually a vegetarian and where I live, the sushi joints tend to have so-so selections. Therefore, I'll eat whatever vegetarian sushi the talented chef chooses to throw in front of me. MMmmm, sushi.

Hopefully going to Haiku in Columbus, OH this weekend for some good sushi!

dX927 03-06-2005 11:39 PM

I've only ever had shrimp sushi and a veggie california roll (which was terrible).

It was at a really large Chinese buffet in the Bronx that had a sushi bar. But it wasn't just sitting around, they actually had a guy there who would make whatever you wanted. There were so many things I wanted to try but I was so intimidated by all the fancy names. I really want to go to a sushi place with someone who knows what's what so I can really try it.

That plate looked very appetizing, especially for only $16. That's pretty cheap from what I've heard.

0energy0 03-07-2005 09:33 AM

I prefer cali rolls, philly rolls, and eel. i don't know their real names, but they are very tasty.

p.s. i use a lot of ginger when i eat them.
