[gallery + review] Food at the U.S. Open

The famously esoteric Food Village at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center offers everything from
Indian and Japanese options to a Kosher deli and a French creperie. SI.com invited well-known NYC food
critic Ed Levine to the U.S. Open for an odyssey through the food stands. A frequent contributor to
The New York Times, Levine's food website, Serious Eats, was named one of TIME magazine's 50 Best Websites of 2010.

Hunger Pains” by Ted Sabarese.

author's comments:
Each model’s clothing in the series was made entirely of real food and depicts a meal
that the person was craving. This project was shot in January of 2009
(pre Lady Gaga).

15 designers, led by Ami Goodheart of SOTO Productions, were involved and each
garment took hours to cook, create and assemble. The artichoke gown was designed
by Daniel Feld and Wesley Nault of Project Runway fame. It took over six hours to
finish (the model stood the entire time while they attached each, individual leaf).

CONTAINER - without thought, by naoto fukasawa

author's comments:
what comes into mind when people hear the word 'container'?
is there a clear cut image held in common by everyone?
is the shape of a container dependent on its contents?
or do people look at a container and think,
'if it's this shape, then I want to put X in it'?
there's an appeal to containers, regardless of what's in them.
we came up with various designs when discussing just what that appeal was.
we searched out the soul of this appeal that was 'effortlessly good'.

INGREDIENTS 1 roll (16.5 oz) Pillsbury® refrigerated gingerbread or peanut butter cookies
64 small pretzel twists 64 semisweet chocolate chips (about 1/4 cup)
16 candied cherries, cut in half, if desired

DIRECTIONS 1. Heat oven to 350°F. With hands, shape roll of cookie dough into triangle-shaped log. (If dough is too soft to cut, place in freezer 30 minutes.)
2. With thin sharp knife, cut dough into 32 (1/4-inch-thick) triangular slices; on ungreased cookie sheets, place 2 inches apart. Place 2 pretzel twists on each triangle near corners for antlers. 3. Bake 7 to 11 minutes or until set. While warm, lightly press 2 chocolate chips into each cookie for eyes and 1 cherry half for nose. Remove from cookie sheets. Let stand until chocolate chips are set, about 15 minutes. Store between sheets of waxed paper in tightly covered container.

I'm not sure if I can avoid sharing some of those other bento creations found in your link, 'cause some of them are just as creative as other "bento artists" in which I've featured here before. They are really cool.

The above? It is the Xmas !!! Bento box, crafted by nonachan. She actually provides a basic recipe of the ingredients and food that was made in the preparation of the bento. There's also a second fbento box she made as well.

Chocolatier Carves World Heritage Monuments in White Chocolate
Mirco Della Vechia, one of Italy’s most talented chocolatiers, has created a series of replicas of world heritage monuments carved in white chocolate.

Demonstrating immense talent and patience, Della Vechia has taken huge blocks of chocolate and, using a series of fine carving tools, turned them
into sweet models most people would love to sink their teeth into. The Chocolate World Heritage Monuments collection, currently on display at a
Hong Kong shopping mall, features white chocolate models of famous landmarks, such as the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Colosseum, Stonehenge,
the Parthenon, or Egypt’s Abu Simbel.

Apart from this incredible collection of chocolate models, Mirco Della Vechia also holds the Guinness record for the largest chocolate sculpture in the world
– a 1.5-meter-tall, 2.5-meter-long and 5.37-ton-heavy replica of the Dome of Milan.
