I've tried it a couple times. Not for me though: I don't like the taste of anise. If you don't like black licorice, you probably won't like absinthe.

It's tasty, but I can't drink too much of it. The flavor is pretty overpowering, and it just gets sticky after a while.
My friends who are really into it are, I think, mostly attracted to the ritual of it. The special equipment, the process of watering and sugaring it. As a drink, it's not really all that exciting. |

I've bought a few bottles of Pernod and Ricard in the past. Expensive and distinctive in flavour. But they last a long time. Not sure if they are up there with absinth (i.e. I don't think they have wormwood in them).
The effect of adding cold water to the shot is nice tho.

the stuff i had was ordered from europe by a good friend. i was about 15 at the time, so i wasnt as interested in the brand as much as i was about drinking it.
i'll describe the taste as licorice and gasoline. when the stuff kicked in my body felt almost the same as it does when i eat the local psilocybin mushrooms. other than that it was the same as just being hammered. fun stuff i suppose. nothing i could see myself drinking as regularly as whiskey though.

Thanks all. Since I absolutely abhor licorice I will likely take a pass. My father in law bought the stuff when it was illegal to own in the US. One of my favorite characters from the literary world (Agent Alouisius Pendergast) partakes of the elixir, which is what led me to inquire. Thanks again!

It's not something I care to drink all the time, but it's something that I will occasionally. I concur with what someone said earlier... if you don't like black licorice you're probably not going to like it.

I picked up a bottle of "legal absinthe" in the US called Lucid a little over a year ago. I guess the only difference is the lack of real wormwood in it. I liked it, but definately not an everyday drink. At $60 a bottle (750 ml), it's something you want to make sure you really want before buying it.

There is a czech beer bar in North Sydney - went for dinner with friends. We tried both the dripping water through the sugar cube into and the flaming sugar cube. The drink itself is ok, but I'm not rushing out to buy more. The czech waitress was hot, so may have influenced our buying decisions!

I have some absinthe from France that a neighbor gave me. I rarely drink so I have yet to try it. I will have to let you know what it's like when I do.
I made some for the SO and he liked it. I love how you make it, especially lighting the sugar cube on fire.
