Fancying Up Boxed Cake
My husband purchased me a couple of boxed cake mixes. Devil's Food and Strawberry. He thought it might satiate my sweet tooth. But the truth of the matter is that I'm not a big fan of boxed cakes. They're great to have on hand when you suddenly recall an important event for which a cake is required, but aside from that I'm not sure that I would use them.
So, foodies of the TFP - give me some suggestions. What can I do to have some fun with these cake mixes and their cheezy vanilla frosting?

Add ice cream to the mix.
Add hot fudge/carmel/etc to the mix. Take out "plugs" of cake and add Jello. Layer it with the ready-to-eat cheesecake filling. Layer with soylent green.

All of those sound delightful, other than the soilent green.
---------- Post added at 03:33 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:30 PM ---------- So how do I add ice cream to the mix, anyway? Wouldn't I need to alter the proportions to keep it from getting too runny?

Along the lines of the Jello cake I also will pour pudding over the cake before it sets up.
Mmmm...I actually made a Jello cake the other night.

Easy answer: Fresh fruit. Also, vanilla extract in the strawberry mix would be good. Maybe even some banana? Adding cinnamon works for some, but I don't know that I'd want to do that with either of the varieties presented.
Just take what you start with and add to it to make it your own. I'd ditch the prepackaged icing entirely, but then I don't buy cakes in boxes to begin with. It seems like cheating. I'm also against the prepackaged muffin mix for the same reason. I don't know if you do your cake in layers, but if you do it's a perfect way to add some variety as well. Some people are intimidated by the idea, but it's not that hard and you can put just about anything between the layers. Get creative.

I often use cake mix as a basis for more flavorful muffins. You could make strawberry creme muffins with the strawberry cake mix, some cream cheese filling, and even stuff it with some strawberries.
I used Spice Cake mix to make pumpkin cream cheese muffins from an awesome recipe Noodle gave me.
