Infused Vodka...

This is what happens when I'm bored with a ton of vodka and fresh ground coffee...

I'll let you all know how it tastes in a week.

Anyone else infuse vodka with stuff... ?

snowy 02-18-2009 06:10 PM

I've enjoyed a lot of infusions--one of the local bartenders is known for his, and I am a dedicated patron of his. He uses a variety of liquors, not just vodka. Blueberry gin shows up a lot, and his ginger infused bourbon was one of my favorites. One of his more interesting experiments was lavender vodka. There is always black raspberry vodka; it is a customer favorite. He makes a cocktail called a Chiquita that consists of black raspberry vodka, peach puree, and tonic. It sounds like a sweet drink but it really isn't.

We've yet to make our own, but I would like to try.

Now I want a cocktail.

World's King 02-18-2009 06:16 PM

I think my next will be bacon whiskey or vodka...

Baraka_Guru 02-18-2009 06:52 PM

Would mustard vodka work?

sapiens 02-18-2009 06:58 PM

Makes me want to buy a 1.5 liter bottle and a bunch of mason jars and experiment. I haven't had any hard liquor in 6 months.

I don't know... I'd use mustard seed. Could be interesting. I'll try it.

Let us know.

Plan9 02-18-2009 07:30 PM

This is totally a good idea for me.

Wow.

World's King 02-18-2009 07:43 PM

So what else... ?

There is a bar/restaurant in Denver called Red Square that has in house made infused vodkas... They are amazing. Plus one of the largest list of vodka I've ever seen.

Ripsaw 03-03-2009 11:10 PM

I've done the coffee thing and a few others.
Shiso.
Thai Chili.
Raspberry.
Lemon.
Thai Peppercorn.
Cardamom.
Salt, Sugar, Cayenne.
If bacon can be done, why not my other meat favorite, duck confit?

World's King 03-03-2009 11:14 PM

Oh by the way...

It was really good. It kept me up most of the night.

Glory's Sun 03-04-2009 06:06 AM

This is so wrong on so many levels..

first the skyy.. then the infusion..

maybe you had to infuse it because skyy is horrible. Good vodka is meant to be enjoyed and savored without any alterations.

/vodka snob.

World's King 03-04-2009 07:49 AM

That's why I used Skyy.

It was on sale for $20.

robot_parade 03-04-2009 03:07 PM

We make homemade vanilla with...vanilla beans and vodka. Big bottle of vodka, several fresh vanilla beans, a few months wait, and you have enough vanilla to last you for...a good long while.

shakran 03-04-2009 07:01 PM

call me crazy, but cinnamon-infused vodka might be fun.

well of course it was vile.. Absolut is horrible.

Maybe it's just me.. or maybe it's just all of you.. I don't get the infused or flavored vodka thing. If you have a good vodka, there is no need to ruin it with flavors or infusion.

That's like wasting a perfectly good steak with A1. It's just wrong.

Or .. you could -not- shove your opinion down peoples throats and let them enjoy things how they will ;)

Kudos to the infusers!! :)

or you could just ignore my comments if you don't like them..

I'm not saying that people shouldn't enjoy what they enjoy.. just saying I don't understand it. I'm more than welcome to post my opinion on any subject just as you are. So drink your fruity disgusting vodka and carry on.

JamesB 03-05-2009 06:19 AM

Lol. Pent up aggression dude?

You are right, you don't understand it. Period. You claim to be a vodka aficionado, but what brand do you really drink .. and more importantly .. how?

I bet you are all bark just like most other closet ragers out there ;)

---

To the civilized crowd here: Pineapple - gotta try that one!

yeah I'm all bark. That's why I drink Chopin and Ketal One. Slightly chilled and straight.

it's ok.. I'm just not civilized like you.

JamesB 03-05-2009 06:25 AM

Ket e l One - and chilled ? God .. the only thing worse would have been to hear "on ice".
Oh, and a Polish vodka? Ouch.

.. I know a pointless discussion when I see one. I am done with you.

yeah.. be done with me.. proves you don't know jack shit about vodka. You're probably obsessed with Grey Goose..because you think it's a designer vodka. You also probably drink it in a mixture of fruit juices because while you want to be hardcore you just can't handle vodka. You probably dress like a wanna-be guido because they get all the chicks and always have a designer drink in their hand because that is so fucking cool. I mean, surely you know more than I do because you love flavored vodka. I'm sure that most vodka snobs and those who make the stuff the right way would agree with you on your assessment on all levels.

how's that for fair play? You want to play mr. generalization?

yeah I said chilled but you obviously missed the slightly part. It's not even cold it's chilled. which means it's just barely cooled, but who am I to tell you what that means? You're the cultured one here. I'm just the one who doesn't know what a good vodka is and is even less cultured because I think infused or flavored vodka's are horrible. Plus the fact that I made a simple spelling mistake proves your point. Never mind that I was doing 14 things at once while trying to respond to your cultured response. I was just way outclassed.

I don't like Vodka at all, really, but this intrigues me: Skittles Vodka Tutorial | Mix That Drink

Daval 03-05-2009 07:30 AM

Vodka is my drink of choice usually. When I drink it straight then I drink it chilled (cold) and my favourite Vodka's are from Estonia - I have a couple of bottles of premium brand that I save for this purpose. I typically drink it from a shot glass because from a larger glass I find it warms too quickly. I will drink it warm if I have to, but I prefer it cold. oh, and never with ice.

I do like mixxed drinks though as well. Either a fruit juice with a cheaper brand vodka (and absolut or stolichnaya fits the bill nicely for this) or even an infused vodka with a bit of Soda and this is where i like the blueberry or currant. I actually quite like Absolut Currant with Coke Zero. Very tasty.

Which vodkas? Not sure if I've had any from Estonia before. At least you don't subscribe to the theory that only Russian vodkas are worth drinking ;)

I drink a few mixed drinks if that's what's available at a party or whatever..typically the only drink that I will have is a Madras, but again it has to be a good premium vodka. I think that since I drink every night, that I just can't do the well vodkas or cheaper ones anymore. I get a better warmth and better bite off of the Premium vodkas. I don't do any sodas because I've found that the sugar ruins the flavor profile.. however, since you say coke zero that is probably not an issue since it doesn't contain any sugar.

so anyway, apologizes from me to king for fucking up his thread..but I'm sure he was well aware when he posted that I would be in here trying to be a purist and all :p

World's King 03-05-2009 10:48 AM

I don't drink much vodka these days anyway. I'm more of a whiskey drinker. I always have been.

This one is my favourite, although I don't think it is available in North America. I get relatives and friends to bring it to me when they visit.

The Estonian vodkas sold in the US are found here:-

Grasshopper Green 03-06-2009 05:59 PM

After tasting an awesome coffee flavored tequila in Mexico, I tried making one myself. It didn't work so well. I haven't tried any infusions since.

ColonelSpecial 03-07-2009 02:34 AM

I haven't tried this yet but it is on my list to do: Skittles Vodka Tutorial | Mix That Drink

The resulting vodka would seem to be quite sweet due to the sugar but the colors are so pretty!

So I went and checked out the list.. I don't think I've had any of the Estonian brands. The Turi sounds interesting..although it's probably not available in the US. It's a Rye vodka.. I usually prefer wheat vodkas (with the exception of Chopin--Chopin is the only really good potato vodka I've tried)

What's the flavor profile on the one that you enjoy?? nice bite? full?

BenChuy 03-16-2009 01:08 AM

I did this about 4 years ago but with cherries. The vodka was awful, the cherries got you drunk after 4 of them. I should do that again and put them in a fruit salad.

Turi is available in the US, I've seen it in Liquor stores in NY and NJ for sure.

To be honest, I am not a connosour (however you spell that) enough to describe flavour profiles. I just know what I like and this is it.

inattentive 03-16-2009 09:03 AM

Working in hospitality, Im a chef, I work with people in the bar helping with designs of drinks. What goes with what, sort of thing.
I find vanilla beans always work well with infusions. Generally 4 weeks is enough. Cacao beans to give a slightly chocolatey taste works well too. If you infuse vodka with cinnamon sticks and then put a shot of that with some good quality apple juice, it almost tastes like apple pie. Another is lime zest thou ensure all the white pith is gone otherwise it will go bitter.
Bison grass vodka is interesting. It have seen it in both australia and the united kingdom.
Good drinking!

I've had this a few times. Really unique flavour - quite liked it.

I make limoncello with vodka so I'm putting lemon into the mix.

And:
Orange
Raspberry

MiSo 03-17-2009 02:41 PM

i've used kiwi's before.
make sure they're sweet and only let it sit for a day.
any more than that and it becomes bitter.

do it right and its fantastic.
