When do you eat salad during the meal?
I grew up in a household that had our salad after the entree.
Seems like I always take a ribbing for this whether I am eating out and trying to have the waitperson bring my salad last or eating supper in? When do you eat yours? |
As they/I actually prepare the meal, so before... last salad I had was at Bertucci's... best salad I ever had... was waiting for my Chicken Parmesan Panini.
I can only see three(possibly four) choices here: before, during, after, or I don't eat salads. |
I prefer to eat mine with the meal
|
I prefer to eat mine before the meal most of the time. Sometimes I like to eat it with the meal. But mostly I like the chill and texture and sometimes the contrast during the meal is distracting to the main course.
|
I like having mine after the meal but generally have it before the meal because that when most eat their salad.
I like a cheese tray before dessert too. |
Definitely after, although at restaurants in the US you don't have much choice other than to eat it before.
|
i think almost every restaurant in the U.S. serves their customers like so:
appetizers, salads, entree's, desserts. i usually eat my salads before entree's. |
I eat it first or during the entree, and only rarely with dressing. It's high in fiber and can serve to help with digestion and to fill you up before dessert.
|
I eat it before the entree, because I want to get my fill of the good stuff--veggies! Sometimes I just have salad for dinner--a big giant green salad loaded with vegetables (broccoli, cucumbers, tomatoes, avocado, carrots, peppers). I do like dressing though--my favorite is Annie's Goddess Dressing:
http://www.consorzio.com/catalog/ima...essing_8oz.JPG I also really love those new salad spritzers with the spray balsamic vinaigrette. Yummy! Speaking of salad, I had a really good Caesar salad for dinner tonight. It seems like more and more restaurants are making their own dressings, especially Caesar. I've also noticed that garnishing Caesar salads with anchovies is becoming a trend. I understand that there is anchovy in Caesar dressing...but I don't need anchovy fillets on my plate. |
i also grew up eating it after, but now i eat the salad when it comes. at home i eat it when i damn well want to....
|
Before only. the taste is not that strong so eating it 1st is a good way to start but after, it would be a bit boring. Kinda like eating dessert before the meal.
|
I'm a small guy. I get full very easy. If I eat a salad with a meal it's most likely gonna be the only thing I eat. If I'm at a place that brings you one first... I pick at it till the waiter comes back.
|
Well, here's a good question:
When going out to eat... who the hell has room for a appetizer, salad, entree, and dessert? The portion sizes are usually huge at cheaper chain places. I can only get two items in me... and usually the salad and entree. I guess some Americans are dumpster-like in their stomach capacity. |

I love this dressing, too, and in addition to putting it on salad, I really like a little of it on grilled salmon. When I was growing up, my family ate salad with the meal. We never went out to dinner, so until I got out on my own and starting going to restaurants I didn't realize that most restaurants in the U.S. serve salad before dinner. Eventually when I went to "classier" restaurants in the U.S. and some restaurants in Europe, I first had salad after the main course ...I think to cleanse the pallate. This last way makes the most sense to me and I find is most satisfying as part of a full multi-course meal. |
I don't like full salads at the start of a meal. As I see it, salads are best either as the meal itself (chicken Caesar) or as a side dish. The best is a nice slaw (do you consider that a salad?) next to fries and a Montreal smoked meat sandwich. Eat most of it during the main event, saving a bit for the end. Heavenly.

i didnt' eat my first salad till i was 17, then it became caesars, then ti became HUGE salads, so i can eat them before, during and after. No idea why, but they never fill me up. eevveerrrr...
my pref, though, is before, while i'm cooking or while dinner is being cooked. |
I remember sitting in a restaurant in the US with my brother wondering where our meal was, as neither of us had touched the salad.
The answer is 'with' the meal as a side... |
At home, I eat my salad after the entree...at most restaurants before.
|
in the united states, before. in europe, after.
|
I prefer to feed it to the rabbits. Doesn't matter when.
|
My family has always eaten them at the end. I think its an Italian thing.
|
It depends
I usually like to eat mine before the meal.
