Can't find any Florida Oranges in Orlando, FL.

Hello. Florida is known for it's delicious oranges, however, I can't seem to find any friggin oranges grown in Florida. I found some grown in California. Stoopid oranges. How did they find their way all the way over here. I want to taste some Florida oranges that this state oh so brags about. Any clue as to where I can find some?

- Undercover_Man

P.S.: How bout tangerines? Does Florida grow any tangerines? I love them. So much easier to eat and barely any seeds.

Orlando has to have a bunch of grocery stores... albertson's I think is one of the chains down there... they had no florida oranges?

I havent been down i that area in years - but there used to be roadside stands that sold them-- they were everywhere...

I'm actually not a fan of florida oranges... I much prefer the california naval oranges.. no seeds and easy to peel...

Hurricane damage.
Quote:
LAKELAND, Fla. – October 12, 2005 – Florida will produce 27 percent more oranges this year, and experts see the crop as evidence the state’s citrus industry is recovering from the hurricanes of 2004.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s crop estimate released Wednesday, Florida will produce 190million boxes of oranges, 24 million boxes of grapefruit and 8.3 million boxes of specialty fruit. The figures are all increases from last year, but still well below the pre-hurricane levels of 2004. Grapefruit production will increase 88 percent.

“While supply is not yet back to what we saw two years ago, the size of the crop is much improved from last year, and that’s an important indication of the resilience of our industry,” said Dan Gunter, executive director of the Florida Department of Citrus. In the late summer and early fall 2004, three hurricanes hit Florida’s citrus belt knocking fruit from trees and making the crop one of the smallest in nearly two decades. Since then industry predictions of the crop size for 2005 have varied widely.

“The Florida crop has increased substantially, but because inventories have been depleted and there is some improvement in consumer demand, the worldwide availability of orange juice is still below last year,” said Bob Norberg, the FDOC’s director of economic and market research. “As a result of that and other economic conditions, such as rising energy costs, we would expect to see orange juice prices to increase. However, it’s important to remember that orange juice prices have not kept pace with other food prices. So, consumers will continue to recognize that orange juice is a great value.”

“Our research shows that consumers are becoming more aware of the nutritional quality of their foods and how that affects their health and well-being,” said Gunter. “This is the foundation for our marketing programs, and we are very optimistic that consumer demand for naturally nutritious foods, such as 100 percent orange juice and grapefruit juice will increase. Orange juice and grapefruit juice are some of the most naturally nutrient-rich beverages on the market. Our job at FDOC is to make sure that story is heard and understood by consumers.”

The Florida Department of Citrus is an executive agency of Florida government charged with the marketing, research and regulation of the Florida citrus industry. Its activities are funded by a tax paid by growers on each box of citrus that moves through commercial channels. Visit www.floridajuice.com for more info. I was looking for something like this on our website but embarrassingly we don't appear to have this info on there. Here is a graph from the Florida Gift Fruit Shippers Association of what FL citrus is in season at any given time http://fgfsa.com/season.htm . Right now you basically have valencias, murcotts (honey tangerines), and grapefruit. If your looking in grocery stores you often don't find alot of FL fruit there because they prefer to carry CA fruit since it is prettier. I can't recall off the top of my head the names of any citrus companies in orlando but that is where the FGFSA is located. I imagine if you called them they could tell you someone nearby that has bagged fruit for sale. If it wasn't a 2 hour drive I'd bring ya some.

oh ya PS valencias are really a juice orange so I would reccomend the honey tangerines or if you can find someone that still has them some temples. Alot of people say temples are their favorite variety even above honeybells.

Albertsons in our area was bought by some ridiculous ghetto "Rowe's" store.

On International Drive, there's a stand shaped like a giant orange. I can't remember the exact location, but it was there in February. They have incredible oranges.

Your best bet is to find a grower and locate their sales points. Try here Florida Citrus Growers. You're in Region 7. Indian RIver Citrus distributes all over the state. Also keep an eye out for fruit stands near Winter Garden and Altamonte Springs. I used to find tons. Luck!

Well, navel oranges are the premiere eating orange in America, because they have no seeds. I was under the impression that they grow more juice oranges (Valencias and such) in Florida, and more navels out west. If that's true, that'd be a contributing factor.

There's a guy on Conway between Hoffner and 528 that has a little roadside stand... I've seen strawberries, shrimp, and so many other things that I can't remember. He always has signs out for what he has that day. He would probably either carry oranges at some point, or know where you might be able to find some.

P.S. Yay for California fruit looking prettier!

that depends on the growing season. in FL navels are in season like Nov to maybe Jan or if your lucky Feb. Right now its valencia season and yes they are a juice orange. Actually from what our purchasing chick was telling me shes having trouble finding good valencias now although the red grapefruit are still apparently really nice.

Here in mid-May I'm still getting navels for 59 cents a pound in Central California; that's a little longer than usual, though even on the average they're still cheap into April. We either have a longer navel season out here, or put more in storage: more and more of the navels I buy now have at least one flat side, which means they've probably been boxed up with a bunch of other oranges in cold storage for a good long while.
